Dexter's First Air Force Base Presentation at Stars & Stripes Museum

Bloomfield, Missouri - Pastor Mike Williams is presenting "Dexter's First Air-Force Base" at the Stars & Stripes Museum, Monday, May 22nd at 6:30 p.m.

Many long-time local residents are familiar with the Dexter Airport's creation as a satellite field for the Malden Air Base during WWII and the Korean War. This is not the only time that Stoddard County played a role in training pilots for the US military. A quite different, and much earlier, military airfield was once found in Dexter.

During the First World War a rented hay field on the west side of town hosted pilots from across the country.

Despite the occasional pig grazing on the runway, the community developed a reputation for hospitality among the cadets of Memphis' Park Field training base.

Dexter even helped get three young lieutenants into the record books. Following a war bond drive performance in Bloomfield the night before, three pilots and their mechanic set off on what became the longest flight recorded up to that point in history.

Rotary Club to Sponsor Local Blood Drive

Dexter, Missouri - Rotary Club Blood Drive will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Platelets and type AB plasma also needed

Platelet donors and those with type AB blood are also continually needed to help ensure patients receive the lifesaving blood products they need. Platelets – a key clotting component of blood often needed by cancer patients, surgical patients and bone narrow recipients – must be transfused within five days of donation, so donations are constantly needed. Donors with type AB blood are urged to give blood or platelets to restock the plasma supply. Type AB donors have the universal plasma type, which can be given to patients of all blood types.

How to donate blood

The free Blood Donor App – available in app stores by searching for American Red Cross or by texting BLOODAPP to 90999 – not only makes appointment scheduling easy, but donors can also access their digital donor card and be notified when their donation is distributed to a hospital. Donors can also visitredcrossblood.orgor call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood donors in the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started and learn more, visitredcrossblood.org/RapidPassand follow the instructions on the site.

100-Mile Yard Sale Kicks Off This Week; Drivers Urged To Use Caution

This is the 19th year for the annual 100 Mile Yard Sale!

Dexter, Missouri - Visitors and residents will be out in full force along Route 25 Memorial Day weekend in search of bargains at the 100-Mile Yard Sale, but MoDOT wants you to remember the greatest savings of the event could be a life.

“It’s a fun weekend that people look forward to each year,” says Traffic Engineer Craig Compas, “but we want people to remember that there’s more traffic and more congestion along Route 25 this weekend than any other and drivers need to keep that in mind.”

MoDOT will do its part to bring the safety message to the forefront. Message boards will be in place along the route to alert drivers of the unusual traffic patterns and promote safe driving.

“We really want drivers to be alert—to be aware of their surroundings, to be aware of sudden stops and to look for pedestrian traffic,” Compas says. “It’s a big event locally, and we want everyone to enjoy themselves and be as safe as possible.”

For more information, contact Compas at (573) 472-5310 or call MoDOT’s Customer Service Center toll-free at 1-888-ASK-MODOT (1-888-275-6636).
