WHAT IS THE VOICE OF DEMOCRACY PROGRAM? Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on a different annual patriotic theme each year.
Both VFW’s Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay competitions are dedicated to encouraging a better understanding and appreciation for our great country and fostering patriotism among our nation’s youth.
Students are asked to submit an essay in response to a question or statement on a subject which prompts them to consider how American history and democratic ideals and principles apply to their lives.
This year, 2016-17, the Voice of Democracy theme asked students to explain, “My Responsibility to America.”
Bloomfield, Missouri - More than 400 truckloads of wreaths were transported across the United State through a network of hundreds of volunteer drivers, donated trucking, and diesel, along with countless hours of dedicated volunteers committed to the mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach.
In December 2012 more than 1.2 million wreaths at 1,228 locations nationwide were placed on graves of American veterans' graves by thousands of volunteers. The convoy began in Maine and one truck load's destination was the Missouri Veterans Cemetery located in Bloomfield, Missouri.
Thanks to the many donations from individuals and organizations like the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 59 every grave in the Bloomfield Cemetery received a wreath. These donations and the volunteers that help to place them make covering each grave with a wreath a reality. It also helps in promoting the mission to Remember the fallen, Honor those who served, and Teach our children the value of freedom.
Pictured is Matthew Agey, member, receiving a Certificate of Appreciation to the Sons of the American Legion squadron 59 for their generous donation in support of the 2016 Wreaths Across America Project from Ken Swearingen, Director of the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery. Matthew has also been a volunteer for the past 8 years in placing the wreaths at the cemetery rather in rain, snow, cold or sunshine to remember and honor our veterans and their families.
