Bloomfield, Missouri - Larry White, Dexter Elks Lodge member presented certificates and $50 checks for Savings Bonds to Bloomfield seniors Caroline Robison and Alex Gibbs.
Caroline is the daughter of Bill and Tracy Robison.
Alex is the son of Todd and Jill Gibbs.
Both Bloomfield High School students are competing with honorees from the other Stoddard County Schools for the Dexter Elks Students of the Year. Each student, along with their parents and counselor, Sara Holloway, will be honored with a banquet to be held at the Dexter Elks Lodge later next spring. The Elks Students of the Year will be announced at the spring banquet.
Saturday, November 5th is one of two National Doughnut Days observed by doughnut lovers across the nation. The first Friday in June is the other day doughnuts steal the bakery case spotlight ready to tease their way into white bakery box home!

The history of the doughnut is disputed:
- One theory suggests Dutch settlers brought doughnuts to North America much like they brought other traditional American desserts including cookies, apple pie, cream pie and cobbler.
- An American, Hanson Gregory, claimed to have invented the ring-shaped doughnut in 1847 while on board a lime-trading ship at the age of 16. According to Gregory, he punched a hole in the center of dough with the ship’s tin pepper box and later taught the technique to his mother.
- Anthropologist Paul R Mullins states the first cookbook mentioning doughnuts was an 1803 English volume which included doughnuts in an appendix of American recipes.
- An 1808 short story describing a spread of “fire-cakes and dough-nuts” is the earliest known recorded usage of the term doughnut.
- A more commonly cited first written recording of the word is Washington Irving’s reference to doughnuts in 1809 in his History of New York. He described balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog’s fat and called doughnuts. Today, these nuts of fried dough are called doughnut holes.
Dexter, Missouri - The SoutheastHEALTH Center of Stoddard County Auxiliary Fall Luncheon will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016.
Chicken and Dumplings or Ham and Bean, (or maybe both), cornbread, homemade dessert and a drink.
Serving times are 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ on North One Mile Road (just down the hill from SoutheastHEALTH Center).

Stoddard County, Missouri - Shop With a Hero is a "not for profit" organization made up of Stoddard County Law Enforcement, firemen, Probation & Parole, and EMS Personnel.
This is the time of the year when donations are collected to help support the Show With a Hero organization. Each year 300 children are given $75.00 to spend at Wal-Mart to purchase gifts. If this program were not available some children would not have a gift under the tree this holiday season.
To be eligible children must qualify for the free lunch program in their school district and present proof of qualification for free lunches to one of three enrollment dates set in November.
the age limit is 3 - 10 years of age and they must live in Stoddard County, Missouri.
The first 300 eligible children that apply for the program are accepted.
Enrollment dates are Tuesday, November 8th from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Wednesday, November 9th from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; and Thursday, November 10th from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Proof of Eligibility: Free lunch qualification from school district, if child not in school bring proof of income, a birth certificate of the child, proof of current physical address like a utility bill, rent or lease agreement, etc.

They are expecting a large enrollment this year due to the economy and with limited funding please only enroll your child if this is th eonly Christmas gifts they will receive.
