Dexter, Missouri - Gavin Miller, Assistant Principal at T.S. Hill Middle School has been named Assistant Superintendent of Dexter Public School effective, Monday, November 7, 2016.
"The Board has been in the process of hiring an Assistant Superintendent for the 2017 school year," commented Rick Williams, President of the School Board. "We had candidates and were narrowing the list down slowly and that list included Mr. Miller."
"Due to the unfortunate circumstances of placing Mitch Wood, Superintendent, on paid administrative leave we as a Board chose to move our selection process up," continued Williams.
Miller graduated from Dexter High School in 1988 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Evangel University in 1993. He earned his teaching certificate in 1996. Miller went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from William Woods University in 2011 and is currently working on a Specialist Degree from William Woods University.
He has 19 years of education under his belt. Two years he taught PE and Business classes at New Madrid County Central and coached football, wrestling, and baseball. He was at Dexter High School for eight years teaching marketing/COE classes, coached football, girls basketball and was High School Athletic Director. He moved away for six years teaching personal finance and computer apps for four years at Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia, Missouri and then finished with two years as Assistant Principal. He worked at the Bernie school district as high school and junior high principal for two years and was then hired as assistant principal at middle school last year.
He is married to Kristin Miller of 13 years. She is a 7th grade science teacher at T.S. Hill Middle School. They have three children, Madelyn who is 20 years old, Maddox age 12, and Jaxon age 7.
Dexter, Missouri - Central Elementary School in Dexter, Missouri has received a grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities to support the school's Accelerated Reader program.
The money received will be used to fund the AR Reward Program and Reading Week at Central Elementary. Students earning their goals will be treated to a variety of treats including pizza picnics at the park, bowling, skating, and Snowcones.
The program develops reading skills, confirms comprehension by computerized testing and offers motivational rewards to students.
The Ronald McDonald House Charities supports non-profit children's programs in the areas of education, health, and social well-being, and the cultural arts.
The local chapter awarded over $250,000 in grants to projects in the tri-state area.

Dexter, Missouri - "Leading the largest Jr. Beta Club in the state of Missouri is no easy task," commented Scott Kruse, T.S. Hill Middle School Principal. "This team of teachers works behind the scenes to organize and lead students. It takes each and every one of them."
Kruse recognized the following teachers at the Jr. Beta Student Induction Ceremony on Friday, October 28, 2016. Mrs. Boles, Mrs. Cato, Mrs. Delay, Mrs. Thurlkill, Mrs. Ramsey, Mrs. Simmons, Mrs. DeMent, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Duncan, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Stevenson, Mrs. Monroe, Mrs. Muckerman, and Mrs. Stickles for the endless dedication to their students.
"Our lead Beta Club sponsor, Mrs. Langley, was named National Jr. Beta Sponsor of the Year at the National Convention in New Orleans, LA over the summer," continued Kruse. "No one works harder, puts in as much time, and cares as much about seeing a Club succeed than Mrs. Langley. The award could not have gone to a more deserving person and we would like to once again recognize our Jr. Beta Leader!"
In December students will participate in the State Convention at Poplar Bluff, from there those that qualify will travel to the National Convention in Orlando, Florida in 2017.
This year they are running Miss Abbie DeMent at State Jr. Beta Secretary. Two years ago Irene Huang was elected State Jr. Beta President and last year Kyla Propst was elected State Jr. Beta Chaplain. "We are confident in Abbie's chances of representing Missouri!"
Candles were lit during the ceremony. Cacie Ramsey lit the white candle, Kristi Boles lit the red candle, Taryn Duncan lit the blue candle, Kristin Miller lit the black candle, Jessica DeMent lit the gold candle. Mrs. Nancy Langley held the induction and pledge.

Dexter, Missouri - Jr Beta Induction at T.S. Hill Middle School was held on Friday, October 28, 2016 at a special ceremony held for parents, special guests, and teachers. There were 105 new inductees for a grand total of 282 Jr Beta Members, the largest group in the state of Missouri.
Mr. Gavin Miller, Asst. Principal welcomed everyone and introduced 8th grade student and Jr Beta member Courtney Northcutt to lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.Keiton Buck lead everyone in singing of our National Anthem and what an amazing job Keiton did.....brought tears to the eyes of many with his rendition of our nation's anthem!
This is the fifth year for the T.S. Hill Middle School Jr Beta program and it has proven to serve a purpose and fill several needs at the school.
"This is our 5th year of Jr. Beta at T.S. Hill Middle School," commented Scott Kruse, DMS Principal. "It has become obvious to our students, teachers, parents, and this community that Beta Club makes a powerful positive impact on our school and student body. it is exciting to be able to say this positive impact can now continue into High School with the implementation of Sr. Beta."
The students have sponsored canned food drives, Old School Chili Suppers, hosted formal Winter dances, and worked on several service projects including a flower garden improvement at Southwest Elementary School," commented T.S. Hill Middle School principal Scott Kruse. "They have picked up trash throughout our district campuses, hosted a paper product drive for Mother-to-Mother program, as well as providing an amazing Christmas for area families in need through the support of the Daily Statesman's Operation Santa."
"At last year's state convention, our members attended and competed against other Missouri Jr. Beta members in categories such as artwork, photography, speech, essay, group talent, poetry, recycled art, quilting, wreaths, banners, web design, handmade jewelry, t-shirt design, living literature, quiz bowl, academics and more."
The students were inducted on Friday were invited to join the Jr. Beta Club, not based on a specific skill or talent. They are not selected because of superior athletic ability or musical gifts. It's not a popularity contest!
"This club emphasizes and recognizes students who understand the importance of things like: Achievement, Character, Leadership, and Service," stated Kruse.
Almost 300 students have worked hard in the classroom and are all meeting Honor Roll standards. They must continually focus on their academics in order to remain a member of Jr. Beta.
Jr. Beta students consistently show their teachers and administrators that they understand what it means to do the right thing. Students must represent the school, their club, and their community in only the best ways.
Jr. Beta members are leaders in their school and their community. They set the example and are the role models for other students to emulate and follow. Through the Jr. Beta Club they have the opportunity to be recognized for their positive attitude and efforts.
The Beta Club motto is, "Let us lead by serving others." That's exactly what the T.S. Hill Middle School Jr. Beta Club members do is to lead their school by serving the community and their fellow classmates.
