Lady Cats Earn 6th Straight District Title

Sikeston, Missouri - It was a 6-PEAT for the Dexter Lady Bearcats, their sixth straight District Championship!

Sikeston’s Tyra Bonner hit a 3-pointer to tie things up 40-40 with 37 seconds remaining in the game.  The Lady Bulldogs got the steal at half court and tried to call a timeout, but they were out of timeouts, which earned them a technical foul.

Chaylea Mosby hit one of her two free throw attempts putting Dexter up by one, 41-40.  Dakota Reynolds followed by making both free throws securing the victory for the Lady Cats 42-40.

“I was pretty nervous, but we have been practicing our free throws all year,” commented Dakota Reynolds.  “So I was pretty confident in myself that I was going to make them.”

Sikeston led 11-5 and 13-7 in the opening quarters of district play.  Dexter held the Lady Bulldogs to just 2 points in the second period helping the Bearcats move ahead 20-15 at the half.

“Sikeston has improved so much these last couple of year and Coach Schonhoff has done an unbelievable job with them,” commented Dexter coach Chad Allen.  “To escape out of here with a win tonight is huge.  We got down early, fought back, got the lead and kept the lead the whole game.  A lot of that had to do with our girls getting out and guarding tonight.  I thought we did a much better job defensively against Sikeston tonight than we did last week.”

“Sikeston came out hot,” continued Allen.  “They hit a lot of 3’s and got a pretty good lead.  Defensively, we did an outstanding job that second quarter.  I think they only scored two points.  To shut them down that second quarter was huge for us to get the momentum back, and after that we just kept the momentum.”

Krysten Garrison tallied a game-high 20 points on nine field goals and two free throws for Dexter.

“The wings really got the ball into me and looked for me,” Garrison said.  “I was ready for the challenge and really wanted them to get the ball into me because I knew I could put some points up for us.”

Freshman Lady Cat Chaylea Mosby recorded double digits with 11 points.

“We just kept being aggressive and attacking and got to the rim,’ Mosby said.

Sikeston finished their season with a record of 22-5 and will graduate six of their thirteen players on the varsity roster.

Dexter avenges the 74-66 loss they suffered to Sikeston at the Bearcat Event Center.

“It’s definitely our toughest,” Reynolds said of the District Championship.  “Sikeston is quick and a pretty good team.  I’ll give them that.  They have come a long way since last year and they are well-coached.”

The Lady Cats (22-5) will play Fredericktown (18-9) in the Class 4 Sectional on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at the Jackson High School.  Game time 6:00 p.m.

“They used to be on our schedule and we played them in a district championship game, I think my first year at Dexter,” Allen said.  “They have definitely gotten better these last couple years, and it’s going to be another tough game for us.  We will have to spend some time getting prepared for them.  We haven’t seen them a whole lot so hopefully we can bring down some game film and get ready for them.”

Lady Cats Rout Kennett, Head to District Championship

Sikeston, Missouri - The five-time defending District Champions had a bit of a scare Thursday evening falling behind to the Kennett Lady Indians in the first half of the Class 4, District 1 Tournament semifinal game.

Dexter jumped out to a 10 – 5 lead to start the game, but was held to only 9 points in the second quarter while giving up 17 points to the Lady Indians putting Kennett ahead at the end of the half 22-19.

Top-seeded Dexter rapidly turned that 3-point deficit into a 33-24 lead by the end of the third quarter to ensure a victory.  Dakota Reynolds came out of the locker room after half time and scored all but two of Dexter’s 14 points in the third period.

“That was huge. I think Dakota came out and hit three threes and that really got us started offensively,” commented Dexter coach Chad Allen.  “That set the tone for the second half.  I thought our defense keyed off of that and we were a lot more active because we knocked down some shots.”

The Lady Indians were held to just two from the charity stripe in the third period.  They recorded only six points in the fourth quarter.

“We just didn’t play very well that first half and Kennett had a lot to do with that,” Allen said.  “Coach Vaughan is a really good coach and he has done a great job with that program this year.  We just struggled to score.  The second half we just did a much better job of being more active and more aggressive.”

Dakota Reynolds recorded a game-high 19 points including five 3-pointers for Dexter.  Krysten Garrison tallied 13 points.  Harley Allen added a couple of treys and Chaylea Mosby hit one trey.

Dexter (21-5) will face the Sikeston Lady Bulldogs on Friday evening in the Class 4, District 1 District Championship at the Sikeston Fieldhouse.  Game time is 6:00 p.m.  The Lady Bearcats have won the last 5 District titles.

Dexter Bearcats Upset Perryville in District Action

Dexter Bearcats Upset Perryville in District Action

Sikeston, Missouri - The #4 seeded Perryville boys basketball team were upended by the #5 seeded Dexter Bearcats in a smashing playoff game in a heated Class 4, District 1 basketball game Monday night at the Sikeston Field House.

It was in the 2009 - 2010 season six years ago that the Bearcats won a playoff game and to come into this tournament and beat Perryville was icing on the cake.  The Pirates defeated Dexter earlier in the season and they were looking to avenge that loss.

“That is a big win for these guys,” stated Dexter head basketball coach Josh Dowdy. “To avenge an 18 points loss in this fashion shows how this team has grown together.”

“We played man to man the first time around and they had their way with us,” Dowdy said of the earlier season match-up.  “ We pressed at times and played zone tonight and did a pretty good job keeping a hand in the face of their shooters.  I thought we did a tremendous job on the boards tonight.”

“We beat a real good basketball team tonight who is very well coached. I am so proud of our guys in how they executed tonight,” continued Dowdy.

Dexter barely held on to the lead at the end of the first quarter with just a one-point advantage.  It wasn’t until the fourth quarter the Bearcats went on a scoring run that propelled them to the 59 – 49 victory. The Bearcats tallied 25 points in the fourth quarter, 15 from the charity stripe.

Senior Ethan Flowers led the Bearcats with a game-high 16 points.  He was 100% at the charity stripe hitting all 8 of his free throws.  Flowers also contributed two 3-pointers.

“Flowers hit some key free throws down the stretch.”  Dowdy said.  “We were fatigued and tried to spread the floor on them and fortunately we kept it in our shooters hands and it paid off.”

Dexter’s 6’4” 230-pound sophomore Gabe Jackson threw down a pair of dunks in Monday's contest, a one-hand jam and a two-handed stuff, to add the icing on the Bearcats' victory.   Jackson also recorded 13 of his 20 rebounds in the first half and finished the game with 14 points.

“Gabe has been looking for that all year,” stated Dowdy.  “He picked a pretty big stage to drive them home.  Good for him.”

Dexter (15-11) will take on top-seeded Sikeston tonight at 6:00 p.m. in the semifinal round of the Class 4, District 1 tournament at the Sikeston Field House.

“We play again in about 18 hours against arguably the best team in the state.  We are just happy to have the opportunity.”

Final Score Dexter 59, Perryville 49

Dexter        9  12   13  25  -  59

Perryville  8    8   15   18  -  49

Dexter (59) - Jason Jarrell 9, Jacob Pedigo 4, Ben Sindle 4, Ethan Flowers 16, Tyler Heil 8, Ryan Mayo 4, Gabe Jackson 14.  FG 21, FT 15/25, F 8. (3-pointers: Ethan Flowers 2.  Fouled Out: None).
