59th Annual Bloomfield Christmas Tournament Slated for Saturday, December 26, 2015

Bloomfield Wildcat Christmas Tournament

Bloomfield, Missouri - The long awaited 59th Annual Bloomfield Christmas Tournament begins Saturday, December 26th with the Bloomfield Wildcats earning the #1 seed for the first time in 50 years!

Bloomfield will begin the tournament at 10:00 a.m. against the #16 seeded Richland Rebels.

At 11:15 a.m. the #2 seeded Kennett Indians will play the #15 seeded Holcomb Hornets.

#3 seeded South Pemiscot will play #14 seed Van Buren at 12:30 p.m.

Beginning at 2:00 p.m. the #4 seed Doniphan Dons will take on the #13 seed Bernie Mules.

At 3:30 p.m. the Malden Green Wave seeded #5 against #12 seed Portageville Pirates.

Saxony Lutheran seeded #6 will compete against #11 Puxico at 5:00 p.m.

At 6:30 p.m. the #7 seed Hayti will take on #10 seed East Prairie.

The last game of the evening will be the #8 seed Dexter Bearcats against #9 seed Twin Rivers Royals at 8:00 p.m.

Round 2 begins on Monday, December 28th at 4:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.  Semifinals will be Tuesday, December 29th at 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and the Championship game will be Wednesday, December 30th at 8:30 p.m.

Third place game will be played at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30th.

Fifth place games are on Tuesday, December 29th at 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and then the final game will be at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30th.

Consolation quarterfinals are slated for Monday, December 28th at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. with semifinals on Tuesday, at 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  Final game is on December 30th at 4:00 p.m.

Dexter Bearcats Earn First Win of the Season
Essex, Missouri - The Dexter Bearcats (0-5) recorded their first win of the season against fellow SCAA team the Richland Rebels.

The Bearcats established a half-time lead of 38-16 before finishing off the Rebels 61-24 for the win.

"It was good for the boys to get their first win," continued Dowdy.  "We will take a break over the weekend and get back to work on Monday."

Dexter junior guard Jason Jarrell had an incredible night against Richland. He tallied a game-high 26 points most coming prior to the half-time mark. 

Senior guard Jacob Pedigo also had a tremendous night scoring 10 of his 14 points in the first half.

Sophomore center Gabe Jackson also contributed double digits for the Bearcats adding 10 points.

Dexter held the Rebels to just 8 points in the second half.

"We worked on a few different things defensively tonight," commented Dexter head basketball coach Josh Dowdy.  "They were able to get some easy baskets off of our press early in the game.  We played man to man in the second half and did a much better job of disrupting their offense."

"We also had quite a few younger kids step in to some roles," continued Dowdy.  "They did not look scared and it was good to see."

Richland earned the #16 seed and will play the top-seeded Bloomfield Wildcats at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 26, 2015.

Dexter JV Bearcats Hammer Richland Rebels
Essex, Missouri - The Dexter junior varsity boys basketball team defeated Richland Friday evening.

The Bearcats recorded seven 3-pointers to secure their 63-30 win over the Rebels.

Kole Kelley and Marcus Woodson tallied game-high 11 points each.  Kelly recorded three treys while Woodson added one 3-pointer for Dexter.

Alfonso Torres also contributed in double digits scoring 10 points.  He hit 3 treys for the Bearcats.

"Pretty neat what Al Torres did off the bench tonight in that junior varsity game," commented Dexter head boys basketball coach Josh Dowdy.  "He definitely stirred up the crowd with those three point shots."

Mules Booster Club November Athletes of the Month
Poplar Bluff, Missouri - The Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club has selected soccer player Jeffry Hardin and cross-country runner Katie Sliger as Athletes of the Month for November.

Sliger was the Poplar Bluff Invitational and Jackson Invitational sophomore champion. She made All-Conference, All-District and was also a state qualifier. She is the first female at Senior High to break 20 minutes in the MSHSAA Class 4 state meet – a 5k. In the classroom, Sliger maintains an 11.40 GPA, including honor classes.

“One of the hardest working athletes I know, (Sliger) is extremely self-disciplined and goal oriented,” cross country coach Beth Lewis-Muse said.

Hardin, a junior, scored 19 goals and 14 assists during the 2015 season, adding to his career total of 63 goals and 38 assists. He was an All-State honorable mention in 2015 and made the second team in 2014; All-Regional and All-District first team during the 2014/15 season; and first team All-Conference in 2015 and second team the previous year.

Soccer coach Steve Edwards described Hardin as a leader on the field, adding: “He brings the level of play up for everyone he is around.”

Presenting the awards last week is Booster Club President Jason Smothers.
