DHS Girls Tennis Team Opens 2015 Season

DHS Girls Tennis Team Opens 2015 Season

Dexter, Missouri - The Dexter girls tennis team opens their 2015 season against Sikeston at home on Monday, August 24th.

The Bearcats return four starters including two seniors.  MaKayla Waldner, Macy Urhahn, Alexis May and Kalee Howard return to the court for some exciting match-ups this year.

“We had a good year last year,” stated head tennis coach Kurt Lovelady.  “We lost a couple of varsity, but a lot of these girls picked it up over the summer.  They came to open courts and have been working hard.”

“I know this district will have some state qualifiers,” continued Lovelady.  “It just depends on which girls compete in doubles and singles.  Notre Dame will have some solid players.  Our girls are waiting to see how the season goes and see if our strength is in singles or doubles.”

Last year MaKayla Waldner was just shy of qualifying for the state tournament in singles play after competing in 2013 in the state doubles tournament.  She will be one to watch this year for sure!  Another athlete to watch is senior Kalee Howard.  She has quite the talent as well on the court.  It should be an exciting year.

Dexter will play eight of their twelve games on the road in the 2015 season.  They also compete in the Farmington Invitational on September 19th.

“You normally take two singles players and two doubles teams to the tournament,” state Lovelady.  “I am not sure how I will match up my top four yet.  They should be ready for anything and ma y have two or three doubles partners throughout the season so we can see who they play best with.”

Dexter will compete in the Class 1, District 1 with Notre Dame, Charleston, Fredericktown, Kennett, and Caruthersville.  Notre Dame defeated Dexter in a district semifinal last year.  Kennett then beat Notre Dame to win their eighth straight District Title.

“It’s a tough district once again,” continued Coach Lovelady.  “Kennett is a powerhouse.  Their girls work hard and are very well coached.  Notre Dame also had a great season last year and they return a lot of players, including Hopkins.  It is going to be a tough district for us to compete in, but these girls are ready to go out and give it their best shot.”

2015 Bearcat Football Cheerleaders
August 20th 2015 by Dee Loflin
2015 Bearcat Football Cheerleaders
Dexter, Missouri - A Bearcat football cheerleader is defined as a member of a group of young high school athletic girls who shout out chants to encourage the "Boys of Fall" football team and entertain the crowd at Charles Bland Stadium.

These young ladies most definitely fit that description.  They encourage the crowd to support their Bearcats each time they take the field.

It’s not that easy to tumble and cheer, jump and scream and remember every word of every cheer in sequence with the moves and steps, or flips and jumps!

Our girls lead our Bearcat fans in numerous cheers and are physically active throughout the game same as any athlete.  They are key leaders in our community because without them we would have little spirit.

They guide us throughout the evening with their tumbling, stunting, and promotion of spirit.  Our games would not be complete with out those ladies motivating us to cheer for our favorite Bearcat!

The 2015 Football Cheerleaders are (juniors) McKenzie Anthony, Jackie Kiger, Chelsea Mullins, and Caroline Powers; (sophomores) Michaela Gard, Shellbie Hill, Rhylan Hillis, Britney Hubbard, and Paige Moore; (freshman) Maddie Jacques, Hallie Keathley, Olivia Lacy, Erica Parris, Lexi Renken, Rae-Ann Riddle, and Macy Roper.

Bearcats Prepare for the 2015 Football Season

Bearcats Prepare for the 2015 Football Season

Dexter, Missouri - With only one more day to go the Dexter Bearcats will take the field.  For seniors it will be their first game of the 2015 football season, but the last time they will take on the Ste. Genevieve Dragon at Charles Bland Stadium!

Coach Just Peden is looking forward to his third year as head football coach.  He’s had three years to build relationships with players.  His expectations are high this year, as the “Boys of Fall” have been working hard most of the summer in the weight room and on the practice field.

The Bearcats looked extremely confident at the annual Jamboree.  Dexter went 2-0-1 defeating East Prairie and New Madrid County Central and tied with Kennett.  Though no actual scores were taken and no official stats, the Bearcats dominated the field!

“I was really pleased with the way we performed offensively,” stated Peden.  “We are not a finished product by any means but the guys played hard and attacked the defense.”

The offensive line took a big step forward at the Jamboree and I am pleased about that, “ continued Peden.  “Ethan Stevens did a great job.  He is a game changer and will definitely be someone other teams have to account for.”

“Defensively I thought we played really well also.  We only allowed one score all day and that score was something that was easily correctable.  We were flying to the ball and putting our pads on people, which was great!”

Dexter will meet up with Ste. Genevieve in their first game of the season Friday, August 21st at Charles Bland Stadium in Dexter.  The Dragons defeated Dexter last season and won the two seasons prior.  Time to change the scoreboard in the Bearcats favor!

“Overall I am very happy with our performance at the Jamboree,” stated Peden. “I can’t wait to see how we perform on Friday!”

Ste. Genevieve leads the Bearcats 13-3 historically and defeated Dexter by only one touchdown in the 2014 season.  The Dragons will be under new head coach Ken Weik with former head coach Bob Stolzer retiring after 27 seasons with Ste. Genevieve.

Dexter will return several starters; however more than half of their lineup consists of freshmen and sophomores making them a rather young team.  Senior Ethan Stevens will the be the key offensively as quarterback and will throw to Gaven White and Austin Chesser who are also seniors and to junior Payton Tinnin.

“Stevens is a different kind of quarterback than Peyton was last year,” Peden said.  “Ethan runs well and has been looking forward to being quarterback.  He’s been around a long time and is taking this year serious!  He will do well.”

Dexter seeks their second straight conference title this year.  The Bearcats finished 2014 with a 3-1 in the conference and tied for first with New Madrid County Central and Caruthersville.  Kennett came in 4th and Charleston finished 5th.

“We have a strong conference,” Peden said.  “I think there will be quite a bit of good, close games this season.  Hopefully we can squeeze out the wins in those situations and get the championship.  I don’t want to share it this year.  I want the whole thing!

Dexter will compete in Class 3, District 1 with Park Hills Central, St. Pius of Festus, Ste. Genevieve, Kennett, Potosi, Fredericktown, and New Madrid County Central.  Park Hills Central beat Kennett 48-14 in the District Championship and then lost to John Burroughs 46-0 in the Class 3 State quarterfinal last year.

Dexter opens on Friday night against Ste. Genevieve at home!  Game time 7:00 p.m. #GoBearcats #BearcatNation
