The Moving Wall Coming to Dexter

The Moving Wall Coming to Dexter

Dexter, Missouri – The City of Dexter in conjunction with the city’s Tourism Committee has scheduled “The Moving Wall,” the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for a visit in August.

“The Moving Wall” is a replica half the size of the original wall in Washington, D.C.  It has been touring the United States for more than 30 years now and will make its debut on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at East City Park.

The memorial is not funded by the government, but maintained by the Vietnam veterans who silk-screened the first name on the first panel of the wall in 1983.  John Devitt made it a personal goal to share the memorial with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. was constructed in honor of the men and women of the Armed Forces of the United States who served in the Vietnam War.  On it are inscribed the names of those who gave their lives and those who remain missing.

The wall is 253 feet long, which is longer than half of the Memorial in D.C. and has been displayed in more than 1,300 communities.

This is no easy endeavor to move the Wall or set up at each location.  Several volunteers will be I place to assist setting the memorial and it will be necessary to build a level foundation for The Moving Wall.  Directions have been sent to city officials on how to construct the foundation.

There are 58,000 names inscribed on the memorial.

The Wall will arrive on Thursday, August 6th and be available for viewing until Monday, August 10th.
