Missouri Juror Appreciation Week

Missouri Juror Appreciation Week
Have You Ever Served for Jury Duty?
It's Missouri Juror Appreciation Week!!

Missouri - Judges, lawyers and court clerks thank the 70,299 Missourians who reported for jury duty in state courts in 2014 as part of Missouri’s Juror Appreciation Week to be held this year from Monday, April 27 through Friday, May 1, 2015. During the week, court staff and legal professionals will emphasize to jurors how important their contributions are to the courts, their communities and our legal system.

Missouri Bar President Reuben Shelton said the right to trial by a jury is one of the fundamental guarantees included in the Bill of Rights.

“I know that reporting to jury duty can be inconvenient to our lives,” Shelton said. “But in order to advance justice, we must all show up when called upon so that our juries are truly representative of our communities. We thank the more than 70,000 Missourians who reported to jury duty last year and believe their service will help others recognize that jury service is fundamental to upholding our constitution and democracy.”

More than 50 courthouses throughout the state will observe the week in different ways. Many will display a Missouri Bar poster that thanks jurors for doing their part. Judges also may take additional time to thank jurors and to acknowledge the significance of their service.

This year’s poster features a quote from Founding Father, principal author of the Declaration of Independence and third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, in which he noted a “trial by jury as the only anchor yet imagined by man by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution."

Missouri is one of only a few states that hold a statewide Juror Appreciation Week. The observance began in 2000 by order of the Supreme Court of Missouri, which states, “Each year thousands of Missourians perform one of the most significant civic duties granted to citizens -- they serve as fair and impartial jurors in communities throughout the state. To honor those citizens who have performed their civic duty, all Missouri courts are directed to observe Juror Appreciation Week…”

Visit the event webpage to learn more about Juror Appreciation Week, watch a video on the importance of jurors, or take a quiz to test your knowledge on jury service.

The Missouri Bar is a statewide organization that is dedicated to improving the legal profession, the law and the administration of justice for all Missourians. Created in 1944 by order of the Supreme Court of Missouri, it serves all 30,000 of Missouri’s practicing lawyers. The Missouri Bar provides a wide range of services and resources to its members, as well as the media, educators and the citizens of Missouri. The Moving Wall Coming to Dexter

The Moving Wall Coming to Dexter

Dexter, Missouri – The City of Dexter in conjunction with the city’s Tourism Committee has scheduled “The Moving Wall,” the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for a visit in August.

“The Moving Wall” is a replica half the size of the original wall in Washington, D.C.  It has been touring the United States for more than 30 years now and will make its debut on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at East City Park.

The memorial is not funded by the government, but maintained by the Vietnam veterans who silk-screened the first name on the first panel of the wall in 1983.  John Devitt made it a personal goal to share the memorial with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. was constructed in honor of the men and women of the Armed Forces of the United States who served in the Vietnam War.  On it are inscribed the names of those who gave their lives and those who remain missing.

The wall is 253 feet long, which is longer than half of the Memorial in D.C. and has been displayed in more than 1,300 communities.

This is no easy endeavor to move the Wall or set up at each location.  Several volunteers will be I place to assist setting the memorial and it will be necessary to build a level foundation for The Moving Wall.  Directions have been sent to city officials on how to construct the foundation.

There are 58,000 names inscribed on the memorial.

The Wall will arrive on Thursday, August 6th and be available for viewing until Monday, August 10th.

Cape Girardeau, Missouri - Hendrickson Business Advisors and Dale Carnegie Training will hold three week-long Dale Carnegie Courses for high school students.

The Dale Carnegie Course – Skills for Young Adult Success is just like the Dale Carnegie Course – except that it is tailored for high school students rather than people already out of school and in the workplace. Each one-week course will run from Monday through Friday and participants will be in session from 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM, including a break for lunch. They will be held at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center during the weeks of June 8th, June 15th, and July 13th.

Participants will develop greater self-confidence, set realistic goals, and hold themselves accountable. They will enhance their communication and presentation skills, refine their leadership and problem-solving skills, increase their motivation, and manage their attitudes and stress levels. Graduates will earn 2 college credits through the University of Central Missouri.

Rhett Hendrickson of Hendrickson Business Advisors and a certified trainer with Dale Carnegie Training said: “Most of us would have benefitted from learning how to Win Friends, Influence People, Stop Worrying, and Start Living earlier than we did. The skills developed and honed through The Dale Carnegie Course are just as relevant to young adults as to their parents. By developing strong positive habits early, these students will increase their chances of developing the right relationships the first time. These courses are not lectures – they’re laboratories in which participants can try out their new skills in a safe environment, see what works and what doesn’t work, and be more ready for the world.”
