Tigers Eliminate Bearcats from SEMO Conference Tournament

Tigers Eliminate Bearcats from SEMO Conference Tournament

Sikeston, Missouri – The Bearcats have had a tough season thus far and have now been eliminated from the SEMO Conference Tournament losing to Cape Central Tigers 41 – 29.

“I was proud of our kids for coming out tonight and executing a game plan this early in the season,” commented head boys basketball coach Josh Dowdy.  “We dictated the tempo tonight and we had a chance to win after three quarters, which is exactly what our goal was before we took the floor.  One of these days we will break through and get in the win column.”

Dexter trailed the Tigers 12 – 10 going into the second quarter. The Bearcats defense slowed Cape somewhat in the second period holding them to just 6 points. At the half it was Cape Central 18, Dexter 14.  Looked like Dexter was making up some ground in the scoring department, but in the 3rd Cape came out with a 6 – 0 run and pushed their lead even more when Andrew Statam hit his third trey of the night for the Tigers.

“Cape has a great team with tow or three exceptional athletes and we made an attempt to limit their catches tonight,” continued Dowdy.  “Al Young ended up with two points and Andre Statum finished with 15 (9 came from 3 point shots).  We can live with a 6’6” player hitting 3’s to score against us.”

Austin Chesser and Jason Jarrell tallied a team-high 7 points each for the Bearcats.  Peyton Pollock, Noah Kronk, and Jacob Pedigo added 5 points each. Pedigo hit the only 3-pointer of the game for Dexter.

“We are still struggling to find offense.  The tempo we are playing has a little to do with our scoring, but even when we are taking shots we are under 40% from the field,” Dowdy stated.  “With that said, I am proud of our guys.  We are learning to play with discipline and I believe the kids are realizing that each possession matters both on defense and offense.  We will have a week of practice to break down some film and look to clean up some mistakes.  These kids will keep fighting to improve.

Final Score Cape Central 41, Dexter 29

Cape Central  12   6   11   12  -  41

Dexter             10   4     6     9  -  29

Cape Central (41) – Nikylus Thompson 5, Al Young 2, Peyton Montgomery 6, Jalen Reddin 3, Chase Hagerty 8, Kway’chon Chism 2, Andrew Statam 14.  FG 18, FT 1/1.  F 17. (3-pointers: Reddin 1, Statam 3.  Fouled Out: None).

Dexter (29) – Noah Kronk 5, Jason Jarrell 7, Peyton Pollock 5, Jacob Pedigo 5, Austin Chesser 7, Cole Renken 2.  FG 7.  FT 14/19. F 10. (3-pointers: Pedigo 1.  Fouled Out: None).

The Dexter Bearcats (0-4) will be back in action on Tuesday, December 16th when they host the Jackson Indians.  The Indians are the #1 seed at the SEMO Conference Tournament and will be a powerhouse to beat.
