What is American Education Week?

American Education Week—November 18-22, 2013—presents all Americans with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate public education and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality education. The weeklong celebration features a special observance each day of the week. They include:

Monday, November 18: Kickoff Day

Nationwide Kickoff. Across the country, schools will celebrate excellence in education by hosting kickoff events and activities.

Tuesday, November 19: Parents Day

Schools will invite parents into the classroom for a firsthand look at what the school day is like for their children.

Wednesday, November 20: Education Support Professionals Day

Education Support Professionals keep schools running and students safe, healthy and ready to learn. Check out these charts to see how hard ESPs work to serve students in public schools and how committed ESPs are to both their jobs and their communities. Also watch the "It's More Than Just a Job" videos below to learn more about ESP careers.

Thursday, November 21: Educator for a Day

Community leaders will be invited to experience the day as educators and experience the challenges of teaching and the needs of students. Learn more about this program through the Educator for a Day Promotional Kit.

Friday, November 22: Substitute Educators Day

Substitute educators play a vital role in the maintenance and continuity of daily education. Learn more about these professionals and take a look at resources and tips for substitute educators.

Be a part of the annual celebration of American Education Week and Raise Your Hand for Student Success.  Take this pledge and show your support for quality public education for all of America’s children.  All of our students have a right to an education that prepares them for college and 21st century careers.

I pledge to RAISE MY HAND for:

  • Every child in America to have access to quality public education, regardless of family income or where they live.
  • All educators to be respected and treated as professionals and participate in key education policy discussions.
  • Parents, families, communities, and educators to come together and create partnerships to foster environments that are conducive for student learning.
  • Elected officials to do their part to ensure adequate tools and resources for all schools, include educators in key policy discussions, and make sure that students have access to a world class education—from pre-k and beyond.
  • Public schools to have smaller class sizes, up-to-date textbooks, and safe and clean environments.

Signing this pledge, I commit to being an advocate for great public schools for every student, and I will tell my relatives, friends, and colleagues to “Raise Your Hand for student success.”

Stop by your local schools and thank a teacher today!

Poplar Bluff, Missouri - Three Rivers College President Dr. Devin Stephenson will perform selections of Christmas music live at the Café ARC at Three Rivers’ Poplar Bluff Campus on December 3 at 9 a.m. Stephenson is performing to promote the rerelease of “The Gift” and “The Gift 2”; collections of favorite holiday carols dedicated to raising funds for student scholarships.

“Our goal is to raise $10,000 to endow a scholarship for students with financial needs,” said Stephenson. “I hope everyone will enjoy the songs, which are holiday favorites. More important, however, is the contribution the sales of the CD will make to improving lives in Southeast Missouri through access to higher education.”

The Gift and The Gift 2– can be purchased for $15 each at the Three Rivers College Bookstore and the Café ARC on the college’s Poplar Bluff Campus, and online at bookstore.trcc.edu. Also for sale is Stephenson’s “The Promise,” a collection of gospel music.

Stephenson, who became President of Three Rivers in 2009, has been playing the piano since age 9. He began composing music in high school and has focused on instrumental and vocal arranging for the last 25 years. Stephenson initially released The Gift in 2010, The Promise in 2011, and The Gift 2 in 2012.

“This CD scholarship project has allowed me to give back by using my God-given talents to raise funds to create opportunities for students,” Stephenson said. “Many of our students struggle with finances in pursuit of a college education. Often a boost, such as covering the cost of books or paying a lab fee, can make a difference in their efforts to improve their lives. This project will give us a scholarship fund that we can use to help those students.”

The Gift is a solo project with Stephenson performing on piano instrumental versions of such holiday classics as Let it Snow, Silver Bells, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and Silent Night/O Holy Night.

“The Promise” features Stephenson on piano and keyboards and his family and friends on instruments like guitar and fiddle. Songs include church hymn favorites like “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” “In the Garden,” and “As the Deer,” all arranged by Stephenson.

The Gift 2 features Stephenson on piano and keyboard; John Kulinich, bass and lead guitar; Jon Muncher, drums; Christie Brown, percussion; and Thomas Jenkins, fiddle. Songs on the album include: Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree; O Come, O Come, Emmanuel; Jingle Bell Rock; It Came Upon a Midnight Clear; Do You Hear What I Hear?;  The Birthday of a King; My Favorite Things/Toyland medley; Emmanuel; I Wonder As I Wander; and Feliz Navidad.

Three Rivers College is committed to contributing to the quality of life in Southeast Three Rivers College is committed to contributing to the quality of life in Southeast Missouri with quality, affordable higher education opportunities and community services that support and encourage the economic, civic, and cultural vitality of the region.
