Fowler Wins a Grill, Donates to Disabled Veterans

Dexter, Missouri -
It's always nice to win something at the Stoddard County Fair.  There are usually several raffles available to raise money for various organizations.  Dennis Fowler, State Representative of District #151, never dreamed he would win the BBQ grill/smoker from the American Legion booth, but he did!  He said,"I just wanted to offer a monetary donation.  I didn't expect to win."

And to American Legion's surprise he wanted to "pay it forward" by donating the grill to the Disabled Veterans Wildlife Facility.  Darryl LaPierre, Commander of the Kenady-Hanks American Legion Post #59 delivered the grill to Tom Love.

Tom was overwhelmed by the gesture and couldn't believe what Mr. Fowler had done for the Disabled Veterans.  Now instead of fast food take-out and having to deliver, they can now grill and cook delicious meat and vegetables.  This  will be even more memorable for the veterans who utilize the wildlife facility.

Each year disabled veterans are taken on hunts and nature walks so they may enjoy the outdoors.  We take it for granted that we can walk and hike, but some of these servicemen are no longer as spry as they used to be or they may have lost their ability to walk serving overseas.  Doesn't matter to Tom, he will take any disabled veteran down the trails to the pond or the elaborate deer blind and allow them to enjoy what nature has to offer.

Show in the photo are Tom Love, Jim Adams, Dennis Fowler, and Darryl LaPierre.

Veterans Fishing Day at Bloomfield

Veterans Fishing Day at Bloomfield

Bloomfield, Missouri - The American Legion sure knows how to throw a fish fry.  With well over 100 people in attendance,  it was the largest showing of the annual veterans fishing event in its history.

Commander Darryl LaPierre was on hand along with many volunteers from the American Legion and the Lady's Auxiliary who host this event each year.   Veterans from as far away as Cape Girardeau dipped their fishing poles into the beautiful blue water and caught some really nice catfish.

A huge thank you to the Missouri Department of Conservationists who gutted and cleaned the Veterans' catches of the day!

Once cleans and breaded, the volunteers deep fried the wonderful fillets.  There was a multitude of fresh baked pies and cakes lining the dessert table along with the freshly fried french fries, hushpuppies, slaw, pickles, onions and beans.

What a delicious spread after working up an appetite of fishing all morning!

The Kenady-Hanks American Legion Post #59 holds two Veteran Fishing Days.  One in May and one in September.  Other volunteers  who made this event possible were from the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Missouri State Veterans Home, Missouri Department of Conservation, and American Legion Lady's Auxiliary.  Without the tremendous help from these volunteers, this event could not have been such a success! A enormous thank you to everyone who volunteered their time.  A few people even took off work from their regular job to donate their time.

If you would like more information about the bi-annual fishing day or to join the American Legion contact Darryl LaPierre at 573-931-1506. Meetings begin at 6 p.m. each first Thursday of the month.

Perhaps you would like to volunteer, just give him a call.  It's truly worthwhile event and so enjoyed seeing the many smiles upon the faces of those who sacrificed for out country.  An inspirational day!
