Dexter, Missouri -
Despite this week's events, the Dexter Bearcats played admirably.  "The team played really hard and with a lot of pride,"  commented Coach Brian Becker.  "Our main problem tonight was that we had no real big plays defensively.  We are going to start tackling more in practice next week most definitely."

Dexter held their own tonight, but the Bulldogs proved to be too much for the 'Cats to handle at Charles Bland Stadium.  Sikeston's speed and outstanding ground game took a toll on the Bearcat's defense.  Last year the Bulldogs demolished Dexter by a score of 47-7.  Though the Bearcats did not score a touchdown or even a field goal Friday night, they were able to hold the Bulldogs to 34 points.

Sikeston improved their ranking to 3-0 on the season, beating both Charleston and New Madrid County Central prior to their traveling to Dexter.  Earnest Fobbs seemed to be the biggest challenge for the Bearcat defense.  Fobbs rushed for a total of 136 yards scoring two of the five touchdowns.

"It was tough all night," continued Becker.  "The center position is not an easy position to play.   When things are going well, they don't get the credit that they deserve, but when things go bad, they get beat up.  He's a good kid and works very hard."

When asked about Carson Dean.  Coach Becker stated, "He's got some talent.  He's got "burst" and there is something special in him as a running back. Carson is able to make a spin or move, farther we get along in the year, he will get some more touches." Dean rushed for 36 yards averaging 3.5 per carry and he also caught one pass of 15 yards.

/images/Dexter High School 2013-14/Pollock.jpg You may have noticed the Dexter Bearcats quarterback leaving the game during the 4th quarter.  Peyton Pollock #12 came out with the same injury he had during the Ste. Genevieve game.  DJ Dowdy #4 who was quarter back most of last season stepped in.  "He is just a warrior.  His ring finger was hurting a little tonight. Not sure what's going on there," continued Becker. "He's a great team player. He gives everything he's got during practice and during a game."

Dowdy was 2 for 2 throwing for 35 yards late in the 4th quarter.

Dexter, now 0-3 will have a tough competitor at home against Caruthersville next Friday.  "It is not going to be any easier," state Coach Becker.  "With starting out the season against teams like Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, and Ste. Genevieve, we have had a tough time putting points on the board."

"We are getting better.  We've got good strong players."

Final score Dexter 0, Sikeston 34.

The Dexter Bearcats are at home next week when they take on Caruthersville.  The Tigers lost to Liberty in their season opener 60-28, but beat Malden 32 - 7 the following week.  The Tigers won their game Friday night against the Charleston Blue Jays 26-18.  Game time is 7:00 p.m.  Go Bearcats!!

Lady Wildcats Beat the Lady Rebels

Lady Wildcats Beat the Lady Rebels

Essex, Missouri – Last night was an exciting night for both the Bloomfield Wildcats and the Richland Rebels. Both teams played excellent games in the Richland gymnasium and kept the fans on the edge of their seats the entire time. The Bloomfield Wildcats went head to head with the Richland Rebels, making all games that were played last night really close and very exciting.

The JV teams played a total of three sets, but their first game was the most exciting. Bloomfield was first to take the lead and steal the first three points, but Richland quickly caught up and passed them, keeping nearly a five point lead on them throughout the entire first game. When the Rebels hit fifteen points, the Wildcats began to catch up again and the score flipped back and forth between the two until the Wildcats were able to reach twenty-five, taking the win for the first game with a final score of 25 to 18.

The second game for the freshmen and sophomores was also very exciting. Freshman Madison Snyder from Richland, started the game off with five straight serves, earning the Rebels a total of five points. Freshman Gerlynn Grossius, Richland’s setter, also scored a number of points for the Rebels throughout the game. The Rebels kept the lead for the majority of the game, but the Wildcats were only points behind. Once again, when the Rebels reached the twenty point mark, the Wildcats began to catch up. Eventually, the Rebels barely took the win with a final score of 25 to 23.

The third and final set was a battle for both sides of the court. The Rebels started off with the lead again, but the Wildcats eventually caught up. It was another close game, and a good one at that, but the Wildcats ended up taking the win for the night, beating the Rebels by a mere two points, ending the final set with a score of 25 to 23.

The varsity games were just as exciting as the JV games, although the varsity teams only played the average two sets. The Bloomfield Wildcats were on fire and took the lead quickly. The team is filled with strong hitters, such as senior Chelsea Delay and Lindsey Young, which they used to their advantage. The Lady Rebels were quick on their feet and attempted to catch up with the visiting team, but they just weren’t fast enough. The home team lost the first set with a final score of 25 to 18.

Throughout the second set, the home team started off with the lead, but eventually lost it near the middle of the set. The Wildcats continued to hit so that the balls were almost impossible to dig. The varsity Bloomfield team walked out of the gym with the second win of the night with a final score of 25 to 19. Congratulations to Bloomfield Coach Starla Pulley and both of her teams on one of their first wins of the season! It will be a good season for both the Richland Rebels and the Bloomfield Wildcats as we look forward to following both of their seasons.

The Lady Rebels will be attending their next game held at Puxico High School against the Lady Indians on Thursday, September 12th. The Lady Wildcats will be facing the Lady Mules in Poplar Bluff tomorrow night, September 12th. Both volleyball teams will be attending the St. Francis Medical Center Dig for Life Tournament which will be held in Cape Girardeau on both Friday, September 13th and Saturday, September 14th.

We wish all participating teams good luck. We hope you all have a great season!
