The Class 3 District 1 State Championship Track and Field meets were held at Dwight T. Reed Stadium at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri on May 24th and 25th.
In the preliminaries, MaKayla finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.88; however when it came down to winning in the finals, she finished with her fastest time this year of 15.52 where she earned a 3rd place state championship medal. Congratulations!
The Dexter team of MaKayla, Samantha, Brooke and Melanie finished 7th in the preliminaries in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 51.22. However they were unable to qualify for the finals on day two.
The finals were the end for two seniors, Samantha Midgett and Brooke Baker, who have been to the state track meet twice in their four years of high school track. They have been a great example of hard work and dedication. The Dexter community should be proud of what they have accomplished and how they have represented themselves and the community.
Melanie McKuin is also a freshman and a member of the 4x100 relay team. She has a very bright future ahead of her in track.
MaKayla also placed 6th in the 300 meter hurdles during the preliminaries with a time of 46.36. During the finals on Saturday, May 25, 2013, MaKayla finished 8th overall in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 47.07 earning yet another medal. She also finished 14th in the Girls Long Jump. Not a bad day for this potentially explosive powerhouse of a track and field athlete. With a little more experience and determination, we can only imagine what performance MaKayla will show at next year's championship meet!
Congratulations to all of the girls on their trip to the State MSHSAA Track and Field Championship. You should be so very excited to compete on this level and we are proud of all of your accomplishments.

First, second and third grade boys will play from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. each morning beginning Tuesday, May 28th and ending on Friday, May 31st.
Fourth, fifth and sixth grade boys will be in camp from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m each day with the 7th and 8th grade boys following them from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The Boys Basketball Camp features team concepts, ball handling and passing instructions, shooting instructions, defensive concepts, ability and age grouping, contests, games and a camp t-shirt. These students will gain valuable knowledge and understanding of the sport while attending camp.
The cost is only $25 and checks should be made to the Dexter High School. Early registration is preferable, however you may register at the door on the first day of camp. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. the morning of the first session.

Jefferson City, Missouri - Whether your taste in outdoor activities runs toward fishing or hunting, May 25 is a day to mark on your calendar.
Missouri’s hunting season for gray and fox squirrels opens May 25 and runs through Feb. 15, 2014. Legal methods include rifles, shotguns, or archery equipment. The aggregate bag limit is 10 squirrels and the possession limit is 20.
“Aggregate” means hunters may harvest any combination of fox and gray squirrels so long as they do not exceed 10 squirrels total in one day. If hunters bag a daily limit two days in a row, they will have a possession limit of 20 squirrels. After that, they must eat or give away some squirrels before going hunting again in order to stay within the possession limit.
Largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass, known collectively as black bass, may be caught and possessed throughout the year from impoundments and in areas other than the Ozarks. These “other” areas are defined as the Mississippi River, all waters north of the south bank of the Missouri River, the St. Francis River downstream from Wappapello Dam, and streams in that portion of southeast Missouri bounded by a line from Cape Girardeau following Missouri highways 74 and 25, U.S. highways 60, 67, and 160, and the west bank of the Little Black River to the Arkansas state line. Black bass may be caught year-round in the defined area of the Ozarks, but they must be released immediately after being caught from March 1 through the Friday before fourth Saturday in May.
The daily limit on black bass in most of the state’s waters is six, with a possession limit of 12. However, many lakes and streams are subject to special daily and length limits. Dexter, Missouri – The Hidden Trails Country Club in Dexter recently hosted the first annual Demp Holden Memorial Golf Tournament over the weekend on Saturday, May 18th. The new tradition will be held every year in honor of Demp Holden, founder of Holden Pallet Company, whose family and many friends reside in Dexter and the surrounding area.
Verlin Dempsey “Demp” Holden loved to golf, but even more than that, he loved spending time with his family. Holden passed away last year on March 27th, 2012, but is remembered as an inspirational, caring, and loving friend to a number of people. The golf tournament was a great way to keep Holden’s passion and memory alive, both on and off the golf course.
A total of fifty-one teams participated in the 3 Person Shamble style tournament hosted and organized by the Holden family. Tee-off began at 1pm and was followed by all eighteen holes of golf, a dinner, and even some prizes. Saturday was windy but turned out to be a great day for the tournament, with nice May weather and temperatures for the participants.
The money used from the $150 entry fee was donated back to the Hidden Trails Country Club so they can begin new renovations. The first annual Demp Holden Memorial Golf Tournament was a great success and each of the teams enjoyed a great day for golfing.

St. Louis, Missouri - The Lady 'Cats Track team completed a perfect weekend by taking four athletes to Saturday's sectional meet of the Missouri State High School Track and Field competition at MICDS High School in St. Louis. These exceptional lady athletes went and returned with all four ladies qualified for the State Competition.
The winning 400 meter relay team of Freshman Makayla Waldner, Senior Brooke Baker, Senior Samantha Midgett, Freshman Melanie McKuin and Freshman Julia Hahn (alt) finished fourth overall with a time of 51.07 in the sectional competition. With over half the team as underclassmen, you can expect some great times in the future by this group.
Makayla Waldner continued her star studded year by also qualifying for next Friday and Saturdays State competition in both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdle events and the long jump event. She finished second in all three of these individual performances.
Waldner also made a new mark on the record book at DHS with a personal best time in the 300 meter hurdles of 46.71, breaking her own record set previously.
"As a team we scored 29 points and seemed extremely focused on what we needed to do to compete at a high level", noted head track coach Greg Lummukka. "The girls really took a business like approach, had a great showing at the meet and performed extremely well."
For the outstanding efforts, these athletes will be competing in the MSHSAA State competition that will be held at Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City, Missouri May 24th and 25th.
