Poplar Bluff, Missouri - Poplar Bluff Junior High School students Adam Vincent and Drake Dugas were among a couple dozen students who visited St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis on Friday, March 22, for being named the top fundraising students during the recent Math-A-Thon. Adam and Drake have been in the top three in their class for their fundraising efforts since first grade and kindergarten, respectively.

This year the R-I school district raised over $51,000 for St. Jude under the leadership of O’Neal Elementary School Principal Lorenzo Sandlin. O’Neal was the top fundraising school, collecting over $15,000 for the cancer research institution.

Dexter, Missouri – The Rotary Club of Dexter had their bi-monthly luncheon meeting with guest speaker Michelle Reynolds, Development Officer from Three Rivers College.  Mr. Bill Hampton, Chief Recruiter for Three Rivers College introduced Michelle and was available for questions afterwards.

Michelle is based in Sikeston; however she travels to all of the Three Rivers campuses.  She began by passing out brochures and a list of summer and fall semester courses.

Bill spoke about the FREE computer courses being offered on Fridays.  Starts at noon and goes to about 2:30 each Friday for seven weeks.  The teacher will show you hot to turn a computer on, search the Internet, and check emails.  Currently there are 14 people in the class; however they can take up to 20.  If you are interested contact Three River Campus in Dexter.

Michelle spoke about the major gifts campaign and how Dexter is having tremendous growth.  Each year Three Rivers has to turn students away do to the growth and space on the campuses.  They want to increase their number of buildings and along with that increase the number of teachers.

They were pleased that the Matthews family of Sikeston donated 38 acres and will be breaking ground in June 2013.  “This will help tremendously with space and will allow more students to attend,” stated Michelle.

“We have many non-traditional students going back to school or even going for the first time to get their education,” continued Michelle.

There are currently 455 students enrolled at the Dexter campus.  “We started two years ago with around 100 students.  Look at us now,” stated Bill Hampton.

They have also ordered new signage and entered a 10-year agreement with MoDot to get signage up.  One such sign will be dedicated in November on Highway 60 at the One Mile Road Exit.

Bill invited everyone to stop by and see the facility and he would give anyone a tour.  Michelle Lane, Floyd (fellow Rotarian) Polsgrove’s granddaughter is doing a wonderful job for us,” stated Bill Hampton.  “Everyone should come out and see her.”

Bill continued, “We also appreciate the support from the community and from the City of Dexter.  The scholarship program is fantastic along with the A+ Program.  If your club wants to have a scholarship, it’s a great opportunity for publicity for your club and to send a student to college.”

Michelle and Bill both spoke about the great opportunities the College brings to the Dexter area, from keeping revenues close to home and students able to earn a quality education and stay local for less money.  Having a College in your own backyard is great for a small town and its citizens.

The Rotary Club thanked them for joining them and updating everyone about the College.

The Rotary Club meets weekly and enjoys various speakers in the community.  If you are interested in joining the Rotary Club or being a guest speaker, contact Jack Rodgers at 624-5762 or at his email address jrod63841@yahoo.com.  Also check out their new Facebook page, Dexter Rotary Club. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dexter-Rotary-Club/495427427182546

Teaching Education Expands to TRCC in Kennett

Kennett, Missouri - Thinking about becoming a teacher? The Three Rivers campus located in Kennett is holding an event to show the current or upcoming students all about their new teaching program. The Teacher Education Information Night will be held at 6:00pm on Tuesday, April 16th. If students are looking for insight, career opportunities, or colleges offering certain classes in specific fields, this informational event would be great to attend.

This special Information Night allows the Three Rivers College to explain the courses that will be offered in the fall for the upcoming school year. The night will not only cover the basics, questions, and facts about the teaching field and the many careers it has to offer, but financial aid and scholarships will also be explained. They will also have administrators to talk about the easy way to transfer to a four-year university or college if the students would like to continue their learning elsewhere.

Faculty from Three Rivers will also be in attendance to present information and answer any questions the visitors might have. One of the presenters will be the college’s teacher education instructor, Chrystal Foster.

One of the local graduates from Three Rivers in Poplar Bluff, Amanda Pryor, graduated from the teaching education program in prior years. She is an outstanding teacher the Missouri Association for Colleges of Teaching Education (MACTE) seems to agree. She recently received an award from the MACTE for being an excellent teacher during her first few years of being in the classroom at Lake Road Elementary in Poplar Bluff where she is currently teaching second grade. The education she received at the main campus in Poplar Bluff is now going to be available for students in Kennett.

The teaching careers available in the United States are expected to grow throughout the next decade. The Missouri Department of Economic Development claims that there is a state requirement that states that 23,000 new teachers will be hired in the state of Missouri. The estimated teaching salary for a Missouri teacher is around $43,000 yearly. To become a teacher, it takes a four year degree but Three Rivers is making it affordable for everyone so they can finish their schooling quickly and efficiently so they can jumpstart their new career.

For more information on the Teacher Education Information Night or the teacher education program, visit trcc.edu, or call Madawn Traxel at 573-840-9001, or the Center at Kennett at 573-888-6381. Reminder: registration for the Fall Semester, Summer Semester, Maymester, and Augmester are all currently available.
