After the small winter storm that passed through Stoddard County earlier last week, the Richland Rebels finally got to have their annual History Day Competition that was held on Friday. The students have been working the past few months on their projects and were excited to show them to their family members and to the judges.

History Day is always a big part of the history classes at both the high school and junior high grade levels. Each student that is enrolled in a required history class participates in the competition. Each participant is required to have a written research paper, a presentation board, an annotated bibliography, numerous pictures, and an idea or event that falls under the chosen national topic for this year’s competition (Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, and Events).

There are numerous competitions with in History Day that the students are able to enter into. Many compete in Web Design, Performances, and even Historical Research Papers, but the most popular is the Exhibit Division. Each year, the students spend a healthy amount of class time and even time at home working on their project. They are encouraged to be creative, professional, and knowledgeable about their chosen topic and how it relates to the national topic.

The Richland staff and students are happy to announce that this year’s History Day was another success and the students did a wonderful job on it and the Open House ran very smoothly.

Many students advance into the District Competition held at SEMO in Cape Girardeau on March 15^th. If they pass the judges round at the District Competition, they will advance to the State level and will compete on April 20^th at the University of Missouri in Columbia. The National Competition is held at the nation’s capital and Richland is hoping for a good turnout at each competition like they have had in previous years.
