It’s that time of year again where homecoming candidates are nominated from each fall sports team.

Every year at Dexter High School, every fall sport nominates two girls to be homecoming candidates who are announced prior to a home football game.

This year’s homecoming candidates and their escorts will be announced at 6:30 P.M. prior to this Friday’s game against Charleston.

The candidates can be in any grade and the whole student body will vote on the competition sometime this week.

The girls nominated are show in the photo above. Front row left to right: Shyann Jines, Sydney Graves, Katelynn Frazier, Taylor Owens, and Hannah Noe. Back row from left to right: Bethany Christian, Kelsey Frederick, Hailee Hubbard, Katie Justice, and Kelsi Wood.

Good luck to each of the homecoming candidates this Friday! Remember that the crowning will be held around 6:30 P.M. prior to the football game at Charles Bland Stadium.

Bearcat Booster Club Dodgeball Tournament
Last year the Bearcat Booster Club hosted a fun event to help raise money for the Dexter Public Schools. On Saturday October 6th at 5 P.M. they will do it again, the Bearcat Booster Club will host the 2nd annual Booster Club Dodgeball Tournament.

This event is packed full of entertainment.  If you have seen the movie "Dodgeball" with Ben Stiller you will know what I mean. The game is played by putting one team on each side of the basketball court with rubber balls at half court. When the whistle blows both teams race to the middle, grab the balls and try to hit the opposing team.  If a player gets hit they are eliminated. The last team with at least one player left wins the match.

Last years tournament was lots of fun for the players and the spectators alike.

On top of financial donations to the school, the club also sponsors several events during the year.  All sports banquets are put on by the club, as well as several fundraising events throughout the year.
The Booster Club is a big part of this community, and has given so much to the Dexter Public Schools.

/images/SMT/dodgeball 2011 pic.jpgThis outstanding organization is different from other booster clubs because it isn’t just for the school’s athletics department. This organization benefits multiple extracurricular programs within the Dexter Public School system.  This means that the Bearcat Booster Club has been able to help out with several organizations such as Band, Chorus, Science Fair, Special Olympics, and many others.

So leave your schedule open for a great time on Saturday October 6th at 5 P.M. to come out and support the Bearcat Booster club in their efforts to give back to the Dexter School System. This is a great way to ensure that our community can keep all of the great programs that educate our children.

Recently, members of the Dexter FFA Chapter attended the 2012 Area Leadership Conference held in Holcomb, Missouri.

The Leadership Conference is held for chapter officers and first year FFA members, or greenhands. This is usually the greenhands’ first exposure to FFA activities outside their local chapter.

Over 200 FFA members, advisors, and guests were in attendance for this year’s conference. The Area 16 officers conducted workshops for the chapter FFA officers.

Christin Sitzes, Dexter FFA member and Area 16 Reporter, was one of the area officers conducting the workshops.

The greenhands were presented a workshop by Kenneth Quick, who is the Western Region National Vice-President from New York. Quick is one of six national FFA officers who serve over 550,000 FFA members nation wide.

Shown in the above photo are the Dexter FFA members in attendance for the conference. Awaken: See You at the Pole

See You at the Pole is a nationwide day of prayer for students of all ages. On Wednesday, September 26, students gathered hand in hand around their school’s flag pole to pray for friends, family, classmates, their school, and their nation.

The gathering is held before class every year on the fourth Wednesday of September. The meeting often includes the reading of bible verses, singing praise and worship songs, and a long moment of silent prayer.

/images/SMT/see you at the pole top.jpgRichland school district, among other schools locally and nationally, played a part in this event. At 7:30am, the students ranging from elementary to high school made a circle around the flag pole and prayed together.

Local pastors and churches came and prayed with the students and provided worship songs with an acoustic guitar. Multiple parents and teachers joined the students and showed their support.

This year’s theme was ‘Awaken’, calling forward all students to join at their school’s flag pole. The scripture that goes along with the theme is Ephesians 3:14-21, which is a prayer that was read at the gathering. In 1990, when See You at the Pole was first established, there were only ten participants. Today, it is a global day of student prayer that millions of people take part in.

Holder to Take Over Gregory's

As many people are aware, Greg Banken has made the decision to sell his flower shop and move to Kansas City to practice more floral artistry.

Greg and his talents will be deeply missed by many people throughout the area, but the talent and shop of Gregory’s Creations will continue as Tim and Terry Holder plan to take over during the first of the year.

Terry Holder has been involved in the flower business prior to the purchase of Gregory’s Creations. “I’ve worked with Gregory some. I used to work full time, but I’ve been working with him part time recently, “ said Terry.

Terry stated that he has a past with floral artistry since his first job forty-one years ago actually involved the flower business.

Terry Holder recalls that he has worked at Cleo’s Service Station in Dexter full time for about fifteen years now. As many know, Cleo’s will be closing this Saturday after a successful fifty-eight years in business.

The idea to take over Gregory’s Creations got started whenever Gregory announced he wanted to sell. “He wanted to move his life to Kansas City so we talked about the possibility and it went from there. The flower business is a love of mine and I knew it was time to make a move,” Terry stated.

“I’d been working with Gregory and he knew I was interested so it was an easy choice.”

Terry and his brother Tim will be taking over the business January first. Of course the first day they will be in business will be January second however.

Currently, Terry builds furniture for a living, but says he’s been working at Gregory’s about as much as he builds furniture for the past three or four years. Terry is not sure if the furniture business is something he will be able to continue after taking over Gregory’s full time.

/images/SMT/gregorys building.jpgWith new people taking over a business comes the worry from customers that things might drastically change. Terry assures everyone that there will be few changes as they take over. “We won’t be making any major changes. Gregory has been in business long enough that he knows what works and what doesn’t. There will be slight changes such as a little updating, but no changes in services or inventory.”

Terry closed by saying how excited he is to begin this new chapter in his life. He is happy for Greg for making the change and continuing to pursue his dreams, and also excited to start pursuing his own through the flower business.
