LBB Has Solid Showing In Rib City Shootout

By Andrew Cato, ShowMe Times Sports Editor

The third-annual Rib City Shootout continued for the third straight session on Friday and Saturday (June 15 & 16) across the campus of Dexter Public Schools.

35 girls basketball teams from four states took the courts of the Bearcat Event Center, High School, and Middle School for the two-day basketball extravaganza.

The Lady Bearcats had another solid showing in the Varsity division, going 8-0 and taking first place in their division. The JV squad also took home first place.

The Middle School Lady 'Cats were defeated in the semifinal round by Fredericktown's eighth grade squad.

Tournament organizers will get a much-needed break after three straight weekends of basketball - the Shootout will get underway again on July 13 & 14, when the Boys take the courts for their second round of action.

Rib City Shootout Returns On Friday

By Andrew Cato, ShowMe Times Sports Editor

With summer in full swing, high school athletes across the country are busy participating in camps and off-season drills to improve their skills for the upcoming school year.

Area basketball players have converged on the Bearcat Event Center for the past two weekends to compete in the third annual Rib City Shootout.

Tournament organizer and LBB head coach Chad Allen said the quick success of the tournament - which has become the premier summer tournament in the area - was surprising, but was pleased with the great turnout so far this year.

The tournament's success has also drawn positive reviews from the city administration - Alderman Jerry Corder praised the basketball extravaganza during a recent Dexter City Council Meeting. Corder, who is also the head of City Tourism Committee, said, “To me, this is really a boost to tourism.”

So far, the Shootout has hosted a round of Girls and Boys competition, with 23 and 45 respective teams at the tournament.

The Girls will be back in action again this Friday and Saturday (June 15 & 16) with their second round of action; this time, 35 teams from four states will be on the courts of the BEC, the DHS gym, and the DMS gym.

The Lady Bearcats are set to compete in both the JV and Varsity divisions, with the JV squad opening against Brookland, Ar., at 12:45 p.m., and the Varsity opening the Shootout against Paragould, Ar., at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

The Boys are set to be back in action on July 13 and 14 - schedules for the weekend are not yet available.
