County Students Receive Scholarships
Two Stoddard County students were presented with scholarships from the Stoddard County Republican Club at its meeting Monday. U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson was on hand for the scholarship presentations. Joy Ward (above) and Dustin James (below) both received $500 scholarships from the club. Ward is the daughter of Shelly Ward and a graduate of Dexter High School. She is the vice president of TARs and plans to attend Baptist Bible College and major in Children's Ministry. James is the son of Kenny and Susan James and a graduate of Advance High School. He was a member of the Advance Band and Beta Club in high school, and plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University and pursue a degree in social studies education. Cheerleaders To Hold Camp For Youngsters
The Varsity Dexter High School Cheerleaders will be conducting a camp for students entering Kindergarten through 6th grade. The camp will be held in the DHS Gym June 18-22 from 1-3 p.m. daily. The cost is $25 and a t-shirt will be provided. Forms may be picked up and returned at each elementary school and are due on Monday, May 21. Cadet Teachers Celebrate Goodwill Games
Cadet Teachers had a great time Friday - while helping younger students have a great time at the annual Goodwill Games!  The DHS Cadet Teachers helped the students participating in the annual Goodwill Games, held Friday morning in Charles Bland Stadium on the DHS campus. Then the special athletes and Cadet Teachers were treated to a lunch at the Dexter Elks Lodge, where this group photo was snapped. BHS Choirs Record Year Of Achievement

BLOOMFIELD - When the Bloomfield High School choirs took the concert stage this academic year, a solid record of achievement accompanied the young women and men.

Throughout the year choir members have reached for excellence. Early last fall, choir members auditioned for the prestigious Southeast Missouri All-District Choirs. Two high school choirs are selected for the region – for students in grades 9 and 10, and prestigious All-District Choir for junior and seniors. All District auditions were held in Jackson, and the All-District choirs met for a day of clinics and a concert in November on the River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

Earning All-District Honors for grades 9 and 10 was Haley Stroup.

Selected for the All-District Choir for juniors and seniors were Austin Cooper, Paul Fox, Zac Goode, Lydia Graviett, Rebekah Northern, Brett Ruch, Maggie Thorn and Genny Weathers. This was the fourth year for Fox, Graviett and Thorn to earn all-district honors.

“We have many talented choir students and I am proud of the work of these students have completed this year,” said director and music educator Terrie Rose.

In addition, Bloomfield participated this spring in the District Music Contest and State Music Contest.

In District Contest held on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff,  a total of 27 Bloomfield students participated in 11 different entries.

Receiving District I ratings were:

Solos:

  • Rebekah Northern, 1;
  • Maggie Thorn, I;
  • Shelby Hamilton, II;
  • Simone Pry, II;
  • Genny Weathers, II.

Small Ensembles included

  • Contemporary 7 - Austin Cooper, Paul Fox, Lydia Graviett, Lindsay Hutchison, Zach Pounds, Maggie Thorn and Genny Weathers , I;
  • A Little Spice – Zac Goode, Rebekah Northern, Morgan Pollnow, Simone Pry, Brett Ruch, and Haley Stroup. I;
  • This Is It Sextet – Lydia Graviett, Rebekah Northern, Morgan Pollnow, Simone Pry, Maggie Thorn and Genny Weathers, I;
  • Mostly Young – Page Dement, Sean Finney, Shelby Hamilton, Emily Hayes, Tyler Hood, Zane Huddleston, Kersten Houchins, II

Ensembles receiving I ratings at district were eligible to participate in the Missouri State Music contest, held the first weekend of May on the campus of the University of Missouri – Columbia. Rebekah North and Maggie Thorn both received II ratings on their solos and the “This Is Sextet” ensemble received a state rating of I.

Choir officers for the school year included Maggie Thorn president; Zach Pounds, vice president; Lindsay Hutchison, secretary; Lydia Graviett, treasurer; and Rebekah Northern, reporter. Sections leaders were Simone Pry, soprano; Maggie Thorn, alto; Paul Fox, tenor; and Zac Goode, bass.

Seniors included Austin Cooper, Logan Cowart, Anna Eftink, Paul Fox, Lydia Graviet, Lindsay Hutchison, Zach Pounds and Maggie Thorn.

“We have had many ‘moments’ together over the past ten years,: said Rose. “I hope you strike for the things in life that will bring you happiness and joy and that you find work that is suitable for your hands and enjoyable for your soul,” Rose said in tribute to the seniors.
