Countless cats in hats roamed the halls at Southwest Elementary School on Friday, all helping to transform the school into Dexter’s own version of Whoville.

In recognition of the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss, and in collaboration with the national “Read Across America” campaign to encourage children to read, students celebrated with tall read-and-white hats and reading classic tales from the master storyteller.

Theodor Seuss Geisel – and man who creted such wonderful characters as the Cat in the Hat, Horton, and (ohh) the Grinch – would have celebrated his 108th birthday Friday. In 1954 he published “Horton Hears a Who!” and generations of young (and old) have enjoyed his clever creations ever since.

“He has a way of relating to younger readers, but his messages are universal,” said first grade teacher Shannon Putnam. “Reading is the key and the foundation of learning,” Hinson said.

Geisel published 46 childrren’s books, such as :Green Eggs and Ham", "How The Grinch Stole Christmas", and, of course, "Cat in the Hat." His March 2 birthday has been adopted in recent years as the National Read Across America Day, an initiative to promote reading created by the National Education Association.
