Lady Miners Use Hot Start To Down UIS
ROLLA - The Lady Miners (14-6, 9-4 GLVC) scored the game's first 10 points and 16 of the first 18 forcing UIS (8-13, 3-10 GLVC) to take two timeouts in the first five minutes of the contest. S&T made 7 of its first 11 field goal attempts and never looked back.

The Prairie Stars cut it to 10 twice but each time the Lady Miners answered. The lead grew to 39-20 on a layup by Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) with less than three minutes to play in the opening frame. UIS cut it to 16 on a layup by Mallory Beck with 1:35 to play, but Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) buried her third trey of the half extending the margin back to 19 with 1:18 left.  Bailey Beale made a pair of free throws with 0:35 left to make it a 17 point contest at the break.

S&T shot 65.4 percent (17-for-26) in the opening stanza and was led by Knar's nine points. Parks, Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) and Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) added eight each. The Lady Miners were 5-of-6 from downtown and 7-for-9 at the charity stripe.

The Prairie Stars shot just 29 percent (10-of-35) in the opening frame and were 7-of-8 at the foul line. Mallory Beck led them with 10 points off the bench. Alyssa Palmer had five points while Beale and Megan Bergerud had four each.

UIS cut S&T's halftime lead to 12 on a pair of free throws from Elizabeth Kelly with 15:16 to play. The Lady Miners responded by scoring 11 of the next 13 points over the next three minutes to build its largest lead of the contest.

It would stay that way for the remainder of the game as the two sides traded baskets over the final 12 minutes as S&T scored a season-high 89 points in the contest.

The Lady Miners also recorded season-highs in field-goals made (32), field-goal percentage (59.3 percent), assists (21) and blocked shots (8).

Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) led five S&T players in double figures with 15 points. Kemp dropped in 14, Knar and Parks had 12 apiece while Quintonia Evans (Evansville, Ind.) had 10. Meyer also had eight rebounds.

The Prairie Stars shot 56 percent in the second half to finish the contest at 40.3 percent (25-for-62). Palmer scored a game-high 20 points. Beale dropped home 17 while Beck finished with 15.

The Lady Miners are back at home on Tuesday evening when they host future GLVC member McKendree University in a non-conference contest beginning at 7 p.m.
