Bearcats Perform Well In Weekend Tournaments
December 05th 2011 by Unknown

By Andrew Cato, ShowMe Times Sports Editor
The Dexter Bearcat team was featured in tournaments on the JV and Middle School levels this weekend.
The Middle School squad was well-represented in the Farmington Tournament, with James Mullins and Michael Hurst placing first and Storm Massey and Ethan Stevens placing second in their respective weight divisions.
First year wrestling coach Marc Thrower was pleased with his team’s performance in the tournament, and the improvements in their performances since their last match.
“I was very impressed with our boys today,” Thrower said. “The more experienced boys came out and performed as expected, and the younger guys improved a lot from their first match on Tuesday.”
The JV ‘Cats competed in the North County Rookie Round Up, held on Saturday at North County High School in Bonne Terre, Mo.
Dylan Bazarian took home first place in his weight class, while Ty Harmon and Brandon Quertermous brought home silver in their respective divisions.
“All wrestlers gained a lot of valuable mat time today,” Assistant coach James Sneed said. “We have a lot to build on for next Tuesday’s Varsity and JV matchup against NMCC.”
The JV and Varsity squads will be in action again Tuesday night, when they travel to New Madrid for a head-to-head showdown against the Eagles.

LBB Takes Second In Farmington Invitational
December 04th 2011 by Unknown

By Andrew Cato, ShowMe Times Sports Editor
FARMINGTON - The Lady Bearcats had a great showing in the annual Farmington Invitational Tournament, finishing in second behind St. Louis-based Miller Career Academy after a 50-33 loss in the championship game.
The Bearcats posted wins over District rival Notre Dame and Poplar Bluff to earn their slot in the title game of the tournament, and currently stand at 2-1 on the young season.
Friday night saw the ‘Cats against the Poplar Bluff Mules in the semifinal round.
The Lady ‘Cats opened with a 9-7 lead after the first quarter, with big buckets from Brittany Harris.
Paige Patterson had four points and three boards in the second quarter to help the Bearcats to a 10 point effort and a 19-14 halftime lead.
Kelsey Bates and Danielle Farmer both hit threes for the Lady Mules in the third quarter, but Dexter’s offense put up 13 points to increase their lead to 32-22 at the end of the frame.
Farmer hit two threes for the Mules in the fourth quarter to keep the Mules in the game, but Hannah Noe’s six point effort in the fourth helped shut the door on Poplar Bluff and give the ‘Cats a 48-37 victory.
Saturday night, the Lady Bearcats faced off against Miller career academy for the Farmington Invitational Title.
The Lady Bearcats struggled throughout the game, shooting only 29% from the floor and committing 21 turnovers.
The Pheonix dominated in the paint, holding Dexter’s bigs, Harris and Patterson, to 4 and 5 points, respectively. The ‘Cats, who usually shoot the deep ball well, went only 3-10 from beyond the arc.
MCA’s defense was fantastic early in the game, holding the Lady ‘Cats to only two points in the first quarter while putting up 15. The Lady ‘Cats put in nine in the second to trail 21-11 at the half.
Miller put in 14 and 15 points in the last two quarters of the game to take the 50-33 victory and claim the Farmington Invitational Tournament title.
“It’s an extremely tough tournament, our toughest of the year except for when we get to the playoffs,” coach Chad Allen said of the tournament. “It’s a measuring stick to see how good you’re going to be throughout the season - if you do really well in it, chances are you’ll have a really good season. If you don’t do so well, you know you can still have a good year, just not as good as it could have been.”
The Lady Bearcats will be in action again on Monday (Dec. 5) night when they host Senath-Hornersville. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.

Heil, Miners Win Fifth Straight
December 04th 2011 by Unknown

The first half was a see-saw affair featuring eight ties and seven lead changes. The Lady Miners (5-0, 2-0 GLVC) led by as many as seven with 8:43 to go in the stanza. The Tritons (3-3, 0-2 GLVC) continued to hang around and tied it on a Caitlyn Moody layup at the 6:14 mark.
The two sides continued to trade baskets until Taylor Jensen put S&T ahead for good with a desperation shot as the shot clock expired. Hailee Parks made it a five point game converting on an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:17 left.
Angela Johnson hit two free throws to make it 32-29, but Julie Meyer countered with a pair of her own to keep it at a five point cushion. Kelly Carter cut the lead back to three, but Meyer sent S&T into the intermission with a five point edge hitting a jumper right before the buzzer.
The Lady Miners shot 50 percent (15-for-30) from the floor in the opening half and was led by Meyer with six while Parks, Kyesha Hall and Courtney Kemp had five apiece.
UMSL converted on 13-of-30 (43.3 percent) from the field and was led by Moody’s nine. Kiki Robinson dropped home six while Devonna Smith added five.
S&T opened the second half scoring the first six points to take its biggest lead to that point 42-31 three minutes in.
The game stayed around a 10-point margin for the next eight minutes. The Tritons went on a 10-0 to cut the lead to 51-49 with 7:57 to play. Alexis Lawerence hit back-to-back three’s to key the run.
The Lady Miners responded in a big way scoring nine of the next 11 points to extend the lead back to nine. Meyer’s three from deep in the left corner was the dagger.
Robinson hit 1-of-2 at the line bringing UMSL back within eight but it wouldn’t get any closer than that. S&T made seven free throws down the stretch and held the Tritons to two points over the final four minutes for the victory.
Kemp led the Lady Miners with 13 points while Meyer dropped home 11. Parks and Hall contributed nine each while Jensen added seven more. Meyer and Quintonia Evans each had seven rebounds in the contest.
S&T shot 45.1 percent (23-for-51) from the field and outrebounded the Tritons by a 39-to-32 margin.
UMSL made 21-of-56 (37.5 percent) from the floor and was led by Moody’s 16 points. Smith dropped in 12 while Lawerence added nine.
The Lady Miners conclude their three-game home stand this Wednesday hosting GLVC rival Drury beginning at 5:30 p.m.
