SoutheastHEALTH President and CEO Ken Bateman announced that Matthew Janzow, MD, has been named Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Vice President of Physician Services, effective September 30, 2019. Janzow, a Cape Girardeau native, comes to SoutheastHEALTH with extensive leadership experience in the medical field.
Janzow’s focus will be ensuring that the physicians working at SoutheastHEALTH have what they need to provide the highest quality patient care. He added that “another priority item is to ensure that SoutheastHEALTH has a well-rounded panel of physicians on staff so that patients have access to the services they need.”
The Chief Medical Officer’s role, Janzow said, “is to ensure high quality patient care and be an advocate for the physicians who work in the hospital as well as foster a culture of collaboration to make it as easy as possible for physicians to practice in the hospital. The CMO is the bridge between the Medical Staff and the rest of hospital Administration. In this part of the role, the CMO is a communication channel between Administration and the Medical Staff that should be able to clearly translate information in familiar language each way.”
As CMO, Janzow noted that his primary goal is to continue to build SoutheastHEALTH’s competitive position in the regional market and help posture the hospital for future success in the rapidly changing environment of healthcare.
Janzow, a surgeon, has been affiliated with Victoria Surgical Associates in Victoria, TX, for the past 15 years. The group provides general surgery services to a population of about 200,000. He held leadership positions with DeTar Navarro Hospital, part of the DeTar Healthcare System in Victoria, most recently as Chief of Staff. Prior to that he served as Vice Chief of Staff and Chairman of Quality Council. Janzow also served as Department of Trauma chief and Trauma Medical Director.
Janzow is a Navy veteran. From 2001 to 2003, he was attached to the Portsmouth Fleet Hospital in Portsmouth, VA. His service with the fleet hospital included deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Prior to that, he provided general surgery services to the USS Enterprise and her Battle Group. He is a recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
Bateman said Janzow comes to SoutheastHEALTH with an impressive general surgery background and a wealth of physician leadership experience that includes a strong background in quality process improvements and regulatory compliance.
“I’m extremely pleased about having a Washington University-trained physician who was raised locally. His keen insights from private and military practice combined make him a perfect fit for this role,” Bateman added. “He understands, and appreciates, the lives of our physicians and will leverage that understanding to further position Southeast’s Medical Staff physicians for ongoing success in the future.”
Janzow completed his undergraduate work at Southeast Missouri State University. He received his MD degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He is currently working toward a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Wisconsin.
He added that he is happy to be returning home. “My family has longstanding ties to Southeast Hospital. I worked at Southeast while I was in college. My mother worked there for decades. I have many friends from childhood, college and residency who work at Southeast Hospital, not to mention all the people who are friends of my wife who also work at the hospital.”

SoutheastHEALTH Foundation Board Chairman Angie Umfleet and SoutheastHEALTH President and CEO Ken Bateman have announced the promotion of Patti Ranzini, CFRE, from Foundation Executive Director to Foundation President.
Ranzini joined the Foundation as Executive Director in 2015, coming to Southeast with a strong background of working with both large and small non-profit organizations to help these groups achieve significant institutional advancement. Under Ranzini’s leadership at SoutheastHEALTH, the Foundation has raised more than $7.4 million in gifts, pledges and investments, all of which benefit patient care and services along with providing scholarship funds for students entering the healthcare profession.
Umfleet said that under Ranzini’s tenure, great strides have been made in serving the community, its residents and patients by “fulfilling our mission to build healthier lives and community well-being. We also have increasing donor involvement with almost 2100 donors in 2017. This would not have been possible without Patti’s visionary leadership.”
Incoming Foundation Board Chairman Curt Buchheit added that “the ideas, inspiration, dedication and energy that Patti has brought to the Foundation since her arrival in Cape Girardeau has catapulted the Foundation to levels of success never experienced before. It is both a privilege and an honor to work with Patti and watch her motivate and unite individuals with common interests to advance our regional community through charitable acts of time and giving.”
Ranzini said it is the mission of the Foundation to support initiatives that positively impact many aspects of healthcare. These include patient care funds to help those most in need, employee assistance and education programs and SoutheastHEALTH capital and special projects such as new Cardiac Pavilion and College of Nursing and Health Sciences renovation.
“It’s my privilege to lead the Foundation into the future,” she added. “I envision strong and continued collaboration with the many individuals, businesses and non-profit entities that make this community great.”

Dexter, Missouri - Nearly one third of American adults have never heard the word “sepsis,” a potentially deadly, toxic response to an infection.
SoutheastHEALTH of Stoddard County will host a seminar on sepsis awareness and prevention from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 26. The event will be at Southeast Medical Plaza, 1200 North One Mile Road. Panelists are Reza Jalal, MD, Lead Hospitalist, Internal Medicine, Southeast Health Center of Stoddard County; Christopher Crocker, DO, Lead Hospitalist, Internal Medicine, Southeast Hospital; Neal McVey, PharmD; and Robert Wells, RN, Director of Emergency Services at Southeast Health Center of Stoddard County.
Seminar seating is limited. To reserve your spot, call 1-800-800-5123.
Dr. Jalal says sepsis kills about 279,000 people every year in the U.S. That number is more than the number of people who die from breast cancer, prostate cancer and AIDS combined.
“When you have an infection, your immune system works to fight it. Sometime it can fight the infection on its own and other times people may need medications. For reasons we don’t understand, sometimes the body begins attacking itself. This is sepsis.”
People of all ages can get sepsis, Dr. Jalal notes. Those at higher risk include people with a chronic illness, the very young, older adults and people with compromised immune systems due to certain medications or chemotherapy. If you have had sepsis before, you are at a greater risk of developing it again. “Sepsis is an important health topic and one that everyone should understand,” he adds.
