    Southeast Hospice Earns National Honor

    SoutheastHEALTH’s hospice service has been named a 2017 Hospice Honors Elite recipient by Deyta Analytics, a division of HEALTHCAREfirst, the leading provider of Web-based home health and hospice software, outsourced billing and coding services and advanced analytics.

    Hospice Honors is a highly regarded program that recognizes hospices providing the highest level of quality care as measured from the caregiver’s point of view. Southeast Hospice, established in 1986 as the region’s first hospital-based hospice, has offered a special kind of caring to thousands of families.

    “Hospice Honors is a landmark compilation of hospices that provide the best patient and caregiver experiences,” said J. Kevin Porter of HEALTHCAREfirst. “I am extremely proud of Southeast Hospice for achieving this highest of honors and I congratulate them on their success.” He explained that award recipients were identified by evaluating hospices’ performance on a set of 24 quality indicator measures.

    Of the 357 U.S. hospices earning honors status, only seven were recognized in Missouri. Southeast Hospice is the only hospice in Missouri to receive elite status. Elite status recognizes Southeast’s scoring above the Deyta Analytic Performance Score on 100 percent, or all 24, of the evaluated questions. 

    SoutheastHEALTH Home Care Services Administrator Vickie Schnurbusch, MSN, RN, CHPN, said, “The Southeast Hospice team has always been dedicated to providing the highest quality of care possible, both for patients and their caregivers. The entire team is devoted to helping patients and families navigate through one of the most difficult times in life.”
    She noted that Southeast Hospice averages serving 45 to 50 patients and families a month.

    Southeast Hospice, she continued, “recognizes dying as a normal process and neither hastens nor postpones death. Instead, we help people with an incurable condition live as fully and comfortably as possible.”

    Southeast Hospice serves patients in the home setting as well as in nursing homes in Cape, Bollinger, Scott, Perry and Stoddard counties and portions of New Madrid and Mississippi counties.  The service also has a partnership with Perry County Memorial Hospital that’s designed to enhance the quality of hospice services for terminally ill patients in the region.

    Southeast Hospice is a not-for-profit agency that is Medicare certified, Medicaid approved, state certified and accredited by The Joint Commission. 

    The staff includes a full-time medical director with over 16 years’ experience in pain and symptom management; an RN nursing staff with over 100 cumulative years of hospice experience; a dedicated medical social worker who provides bereavement services for 13 months after the loss of a loved one; and 24-hour access to pharmacy, wound and stoma care, diabetic and infusion care.

    SoutheastHEALTH Brings Academic Medicine to Cape Girardeau Forging Collaboration with Pathology and Immunology Department at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

    Cape Girardeau, Missouri - SoutheastHEALTH announced today another collaboration with Washington University positioned to deliver academic medicine to residents of southeast Missouri. Under a new agreement, they will together create opportunities for young physicians and improve healthcare for patients throughout the region as the Department of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine begins working in collaboration with SoutheastHEALTH Laboratory for onsite Pathology services. 

    "We are pleased to work with The Department of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine," said Ken Bateman, president and CEO of SoutheastHEALTH. "This collaboration solidifies our efforts in bringing together the value our community hospital offers with the innovation and excellence of world-renowned academic medicine program.”

    Bateman added that highly trained, skilled pathologists – physicians who specialize in the laboratory study of the causes, nature and effects of disease processes through the examination of body fluids and tissues - are key to helping physicians make accurate decisions about the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The majority of cancer diagnoses are confirmed by pathologists. “Your first diagnosis needs to be the correct diagnosis,” he added. “The expert Pathology team at Washington University will be of great benefit to our patients.”

    Under the new collaboration, two Washington University pathologists will be on site at Southeast Hospital. The Hospital also will have access to 40 clinical pathologists working in 20 different subspecialties at Washington University. Through digital-Pathology, specimens can be reviewed in real time with sub-specialists as needed.

    Washington University School of Medicine's Pathology and Immunology department is a leading international pathology program. Established in 1916, it was one of the first programs of its kind. In addition to a century-long focus on the relationship between the basic science of immunology and disease, the department is one of the major centers for academic pathology and laboratory medicine in the nation. The department also has played major and pioneering roles in surgical pathology and laboratory medicine. The faculty enthusiastically embraces its responsibility to train the next generation of medical scientists and clinicians by offering contemporary and comprehensive training programs for graduate students, postgraduate trainees and medical students. These exceptional resources are now part of SoutheastHEALTH’s services and makes Southeast a part in training future generations of pathologists.

    The collaboration represents another major milestone for SoutheastHEALTH's goal in providing world-renowned resources from a community-based hospital for residents of southeast Missouri. Since Bateman joined the organization in late 2014, his leadership has brought the organization into a position where it is well poised to seek opportunities such as this for growth and increases the value of services SoutheastHEALTH provides. 

    Bateman said he's eager to explore the many ways ideas developed by experts at the Pathology and Immunology Department can improve patients' experiences and outcomes at SoutheastHEALTH. 

    "We're always asking ourselves how we can improve quality, increase patient satisfaction and optimize the value proposition we can offer our patients," said Bateman. "This agreement, and the experience and expertise the university's faculty and students will bring to SoutheastHEALTH, is an exciting way we can do exactly that." 

    George R. Wettach, MD, FASCP, FCAP, a Washington University pathologist who will be based at SoutheastHEALTH, said this collaboration “is mutually beneficial. Of course, our clinicians and patients at SoutheastHEALTH can access world-class academic medicine. In addition, cases from this region help support Washington University’s ongoing missions of patient care, education and research.

    Art for the Health of It Now on Display

    Original artwork graces a Southeast Hospital corridor in the 24th annual Art for the Health of It exhibition. Sponsored by SoutheastHEALTH and the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, the juried exhibit is on display near the Lobby in the first-floor corridor between elevators A and C. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Many of the works are available for purchase through the Arts Council. The exhibit will remain in place until August 24.

    Weight Management First Steps

    Join us for this free, informative seminar as we discuss strategies for beginning the process of health improvement and weight management on Thursday, August 24 at 2 p.m. at HealthPoint Plaza, 2126 Independence in Cape.     Sibling Class Set for About to Be Big Brothers, Sisters

    Sibling Class, scheduled for  Wednesday, August 23 from 5:30 until 7 p.m. in the Harrison Room at Southeast Hospital, is designed to help children prepare, in a positive way, for the addition of a new family member.     Relationship Changes

    The SoutheastHEALTH Grief Support Group will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16 at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape. Topic for this month’s meeting, led by Crystal Montgomery, LCSW, a bereavement counselor with Southeast Hospice, is “Changes in Your Relationships: Widening Your Circle.”

    Share Support Group

    SHARE Grief Support Group is for parents who have lost children due to miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death or ectopic pregnancy.     Heart Saver CPR Certification Class

    This is an instructor-led course that teaches adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children and infants. It will be held on Thursday, August 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. at HealthPoint Fitness, 410 West Main in Jackson. The course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card for CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory or other requirements. Cost of the class is $30.     Accelerated Childbirth Preparation Class

    This all inclusive, one-day, accelerated class on Saturday, August 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Meeting Room 106 at Southeast Hospital, is designed to accommodate couples who just want the basic information or whose schedules do not allow for five weekly evening classes. This class addresses the emotional and physical changes of pregnancy, the labor process as it occurs naturally, coping techniques for labor pain, medical options for pain control, common medical interventions and cesarean delivery. The physical and emotional changes that follow delivery, as well as normal newborn adjustment and breastfeeding, also are discussed. This class is taught by one of the OB nurses on staff at Southeast. Free for those delivering at Southeast; $40 per couple for others.     Cook Once and Eat Three Times

    This class, Monday August 21 from 6 to 7:15 p.m., is perfect for back to school time. With school starting and busy schedules kicking in, you’ll learn some strategies (and tasty recipes) to keep the healthy meals happening at home with less work in the kitchen.     Old Bag Sale

    Cape Girardeau, Missouri - Southeast Hospital has continued its commitment to pioneering the best in minimally-invasive robotic surgery with the addition of the Mazor XTM surgical assurance platform to its highly recognized spinal surgery program. The first procedure utilizing the Mazor platform was performed August 4 by Neurosurgeon Kevin Vaught, MD, of Regional Brain and Spine.

    Southeast is the first hospital in Missouri with Mazor X technology. The Mazor X system combines un-precedented pre-operative planning tools and analytics with unparalleled intra-operative guidance, giving patients the most advanced spinal surgery options available.

    Dr. Vaught explains. “Robotic technology is primarily used for placement of instrumentation in the spine. The idea of robotic technology is similar to using GPS technology in your car. It helps place instrumentation we are planning in a very precise way. That precision comes from first planning the surgery ahead of time so we know exactly what instrumentation we are going to be using, what sizes, what lengths and the exact trajectories needed to place the instrumentation. Once we are satisfied with our plan the Mazor X allows us to accurately and safely place instrumentation as already planned.” 

    Benefits of minimally-invasive procedures include less pain, less blood loss, smaller incisions, shorter hospitalizations and quicker recovery time. Of particular benefit to patients with the Mazor X is a dramatic reduction in radiation exposure during surgery. 

    Dr. Vaught said Mazor X spinal instrumentation can be utilized for cervical, thoracic or lumbar fusion, SI joint fusion, instrumentation needed for treatment of tumors, traumatic fractures or for treatment of degenerative spinal disorders.

    He added, “We are very excited about Southeast’s commitment to our neurosurgery program. We have a very rich and long history of advanced techniques and technologies. There have been a number of technologies we have utilized at Southeast even before the academic institutions in our state. We believe Mazor is the next step in that continued evolution of increased patient safety and outcomes through technology.”

    SoutheastHEALTH Expands Robotics Capabilities with Newest da Vinci Surgical System
    Cape Girardeau, Missouri - SoutheastHEALTH, a recognized leader in surgical innovation, has acquired the da Vinci Xi® Surgical System, further enhancing its minimally invasive robotic surgical capabilities. The first procedure using the new technology was performed today. Southeast is the first hospital in the region, which includes southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky and northeast Arkansas, to offer da Vinci Xi technology.

    The new system, manufactured by Intuitive Surgical, has far broader capabilities than prior generations of the da Vinci System. It can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for complex, multi-quadrant surgeries. 

    SoutheastHEALTH introduced da Vinci technology to downstate Missouri in 2006, becoming the second hospital in Missouri to offer this surgical option and the first community hospital to do so.

    Since then, more than 2400 robotic-assisted surgeries across several medical specialties have been performed at Southeast Hospital, over 1000 of those by Dr. Hallman.
    “the robotic approach allows much smaller incisions to be used during surgery, which translates to a shorter hospital stay, fewer complications, less need for narcotic pain medicine, less blood loss, shorter hospitalization, quicker recovery and minimal scarring,” said Urologist Gregg Hallman, MD, with Cape Girardeau Urology Associates. He was instrumental in the acquisition of the region’s first da Vinci system and pioneered surgical removal of the prostate gland using the technology at Southeast Hospital.

    Dr. Hallman added, “The da Vinci Xi continues to expand on the da Vinci technology. The Xi enables complex surgeries using a minimally invasive approach.” He explained that the multi-quadrant approach on the da Vinci Xi allows greater anatomical access from the kidney to the bladder, along with crystal-clear 3-dimensional HD visualization that facilitates delineation between tissue planes. Additional benefits of the new system include fewer and smaller incisions and a reduction in operative time.

    He said in the field of Urology currently there are 8 to 12 different procedures utilizing the da Vinci Xi. Dr. Hallman noted that 99 percent of patients who undergo a surgical procedure utilizing the da Vinci go home the next day.

    Dr. Hallman said he is “pleased and excited that Southeast has continued to invest in this technology for patients in the community and region. I believe it is tremendously advantageous for patients to have the opportunity to keep their care close to home and family and reap the advantages that this technology offers.”

    The da Vinci Xi System’s key features include:
    A new overhead instrument arm architecture designed to facilitate anatomical access from virtually any position.
    A new endoscope digital architecture that creates a simpler, more compact design with improved visual definition and clarity.
    An ability to attach the endoscope (an instrument that can be introduced into the body to view its internal parts) to any arm, providing flexibility for visualizing the surgical site.
    Smaller, thinner arms with newly designed joints that offer a greater range of motion than ever before.
    Longer instrument shafts designed to give surgeons greater operative reach.
