Spirit of 45 Day at MO Veterans Cemetery on Sunday

Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield WILL OBSERVE “SPIRIT OF ’45 DAY” COMMEMORATING THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF WORLD WAR II.

The Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield will observe “SPIRIT OF ’45 DAY” on  Aug 16, 2015.

The program will begin at 2:00 PM  at the Committal Shelter Plaza in the cemetery.

The second Sunday in August has been proposed as “Spirit of ’45 Day” to commemorate the anniversary of the end of World War II on August 14, 1945.  With the assistance of the Stoddard County Veterans Honor Guard, the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield will honor WWII veterans by participating in the National Spirit of ’45 Program and placing a wreath at the Cemetery.

Since opening on September 29, 2003 the cemetery has conducted over 2450 interments.  The interments have included individuals from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf War periods.  The cemetery is the final resting place for many veterans, including former Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action or Killed in Action.

Families and friends of those interred as well as the general public are invited to attend.

For more information you may contact the cemetery at 573-568-3871.

69th Annual VFW Puxico Homecoming is Underway!
August 11th 2015 by Dee Loflin
69th Annual VFW Puxico Homecoming is Underway!

Puxico, Missouri - The 69th Annual VFW Homecoming is underway!  Since 1947 the VFW Post 7822 has hosted Homecoming as a way to bring residents of Puxico, past, and present, together.

It has become an important time of the year for many residents and former residents to come together and enjoy the sights and sounds of Puxico.  The streets are filled with people greeting old friends and making new ones.

People reminisce about days gone by and plan for the future.  Each year Homecoming is bigger and better with carnival rides, beauty pageants, baby contests, square dancing, music, a church service, attendance drawings, a parade, class reunions, alumni meeting and of course the world famous goat burgers.

“Homecoming Float Contest:  The members of the Puxico VFW Ladies Auxiliary and People Community band are sponsoring a float contest in the Puxico Homecoming Parade August 16th.  Prizes will be awarded as follows:  $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $75 for third place.”

"I want to use the theme "Homecoming Traditions" for the 2015 Puxico VFW Homecoming Souvenir book. So during the 2014 Puxico Homecoming, Lana Hager or Jayne Allison may ask you what is your favorite homecoming tradition and ask to take a photo. Please help caption some great photos and memories of those favorite traditions. ... Since class reunions are one of the Homecoming Traditions, all Puxico High School alumni that are having class reunions will have an opportunity to purchase a page for next year's book for $75. Someone from the class will need to take photos, collect the money and put the photos on a zip drive for Patti McLean. Please let me know if your class will be interested." -- Patti McLean

Once again it is time for the Berry- Glenn Historical Museum 4th Annual Quilt Display the week of Homecoming, Aug. 12 thru Aug. 16. Benefit Yard Sale at First Midwest Bank for Nancy Abernathy
August 10th 2015 by Dee Loflin
Benefit Yard Sale at First Midwest Bank for Nancy Abernathy
Dexter, Missouri - A Benefit Parking Lot Yard Sale will be hosted by First Midwest Bank on Saturday, August 15th.

The Yard Sale will begin at 8:00 a.m. and last until 11:00 a.m.  First Midwest Bank is located on the corner of Business Highway 60 and One Mile Road across from Auto Zone and next to Family Video.

In September of 2014 Nancy Abernathy was diagnosed with Lelomyosarcoma, a cancer of the smooth muscle connective tissue and is often referred to as LMS.  This is a relatively rare form of cancer.

Nancy went in for a routine surgery and by the time she left the hospital her world was turned upside down.  The doctor informed her that they had found cancer in her uterus.  She was immediately referred to a specialist in St. Louis.

That’s when the dreaded diagnosis was given, Leiomyosarcoma.  They had removed the cancer; however she was required to return in three months to run tests.

In March of 2015 things changed.  During a scan they found multiple spots on her lungs.  Just after the birth of her first grandchild she was headed back to surgery.  She didn’t heal quite as fast this time and Nancy had to start chemotherapy.

Since treatment began things have gotten progressively worse for Nancy and her family.  She is on unpaid medical leave and now has to pay a very high premium for her health insurance.  They have even put her house up for sale to help cover medical costs.

Donations may also be made during the yard sale.  Please support First Midwest Bank and help Nancy Abernathy fight her battle!
