Jill Gibbs Honored as Hometown Hero

Bloomfield, Missouri - Jill Gibbs, longtime volunteer and resident of Bloomfield was recently honored with Hometown Hero Awards at Bloomfield School softball/baseball field.

Jill has volunteered for several years helping the community running the concession stand at the little league baseball and softball games at Bloomfield City Park.  Even after her son has graduated from high school she continued to show up in the heat and gets everything ready so the parents and family have something cold to drink and a snack as they watch their little leaguers play on the field.

The award is provided by Modern Woodman and a $50 donation will be given to a charity of the recipient's choice.  Mrs. Gibbs has chosen Claus for a Cause as her charity.

Modern Woodman, Fraternal Financial believes in volunteer service and as a service organization is dedicated to improving the quality of life for families and communities, they recognize Jill's accomplishments and appreciate her contribution to the community.

Shown in the photo are Jill Gibbs and Lara Thorn, presenting the award and all of her many fans!

Southeast Missouri Regional Jazz Orchestra to Offer FREE Concert
Dexter, Missouri - The Southeast Missouri Regional Jazz Orchestra will offer a "Beat the Heat" FREE Concert on Friday, August 4, 2017 at the Dexter High School auditorium.  The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m.

The Southeast Missouri Regional Jazz Orchestra was founded in the year 2000 and has been performing summer concerts ever since.  This year is their 17th season and they are thrilled to continue to make music for their audience.  Jazz is America’s original art form. It is their honor to share it with you.

The orchestra will perform a variety of musical styles, including some traditional favorites like In the Mood, A Switch in Time, and Count Bubba; classics such as Let it Be and The Way I Feel About You; movie tunes including Beauty and the Beast and The Rainbow Connection (originally performed by Kermit the Frog in The Muppet Movie), and patriotic songs including The Star-Spangled Banner and The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.  They are also working on a number of other tunes, some new and some that they haven’t played in several years.  Of course, no performance of theirs would be complete without their traditional closer, The Chicken.

This year’s orchestra is comprised of nineteen musicians from diverse ages and occupations, including eight public school teachers, one public school superintendent, one university student counselor, two college students, four high school students, one middle school student, one stay-at-home mom, and one casino bank supervisor.  They have five new members this year.

Dexter, Missouri - It's never to early to plan for a big event!  Let's celebrate and honor our veterans with a parade in downtown Dexter!

The American Legion Post #59 and the Dexter VFW will host a Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 11, 2017.

The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. and flow from Harps Grocery east down Stoddard Street in front of all the downtown shops.

Veterans who wish to participate can call Bill Kidd at (573) 625-2143 at the American Legion or Rob Myers at (573) 421-1237 at the VFW.

Local businesses, clubs, organizations, motorcycle groups, and the general public is encouraged to participate in the parade.  You will be able to pass out candy, flyers, and coupons to those watching along the sidelines, but remember it's for our Veterans and we want to show our appreciation for all they have done.
