Poplar Bluff, Missouri - Center Stage, Three Rivers College’s theater company, will present a production of “The Good Doctor” by renowned American playwright Neil Simon on November 20-22 at 7 p.m. and November 23 at 2 p.m at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center in Poplar Bluff. Tickets are $10, or $5 with a valid Three Rivers student ID.
“The Good Doctor” combines Neil Simon’s signature blend of oddball humor and sharp irony with the pathos of Russian author Anton Chekov’s short stories. The show features a wide range of scenes based on Chekov’s works, from the zany to the musical, tied together with witty narration by the author himself. Theater lovers of all stripes will have a blast with this underrated classic from Simon’s library.
“The whole cast has had such a wonderful time putting on ‘The Good Doctor,’ and I think that enthusiasm is going to spill over into our audience,” said Tim Thompson, the play’s director and head of the Tinnin Fine Arts Center. “It’s both very funny and very poignant in places, and our cast brings these characters to life beautifully.”
Center Stage is a blended theater company that brings together students, college employees, and community members to produce live theater. It provides both local entertainment and hands-on experience for Three Rivers students interested in the dramatic arts. The Center Stage season will continue Feb. 19-22 with “Doubt: A Parable” by John Patrick Shanley, which was made into an Oscar-winning movie starring Meryl Streep in 2008.
Tickets are available at the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce, the Financial Services office at Three Rivers’ Poplar Bluff Campus, or at the door. For more information on Center Stage and the company’s upcoming performances, contact Tim Thompson at 573-840-9648 or tthompson@trcc.edu.
