Dexter, Missouri – The Dexter Senior High School Student Council hosted the second annual Back-To-School Bash on Thursday, August 14, 2014.
Dexter's Student Council is a group all about joining students together to make an impact on society. They host many community service projects and work on the overall social well being of the community. These students encourage people to stand up for what they believe in and to improve the way situations are handled.
The high school Student Council hosted the Back-To-School Bash last year to help kick-off the new school season. As an alternative to traditional dances, the bash allowed people who were not keen on dancing to have a good time in a safe environment. They had something for everyone to enjoy from music, snow cones, laser tag, inflatable obstacle courses and a car smash. The car was donated by MJ’s Auto Sales in Dexter. The event was also catered by the famous Dexter Queen who sold food to hungry teenagers. They also provided soda and water for this "hot" back-to-school BASH!
The 2nd Annual Back-To-School Bash turned out to be a huge success with over 300 hundred high school students attending. It seemed that all the participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Though the heat drove many to the shade, the teens were grateful for the snow cone truck nearby. If you were there, you probably noticed the teachers having fun while watching students attempted to compete successfully on certain inflatable games.
Looks like a new tradition has been established at Dexter Senior High School. A huge thank you to all who volunteered their time to make this a memorable back-to-school event for years to come. A special thank you to Dexter Queen. "I am extremely thankful for Dexter Queen who volunteered their time to bring their smoker out and cook for us," commented Dan Pollock, High School Principal. "I think we had another successful year and look forward to the new school year."

The Delta Workshop, a name given by one of the founders of the program, costs students $195 each. This is no vacation! The camp included a dorm room to stay on campus, three meals a day, and classes with some of the most elite jazz musicians and educators of northeast Arkansas. The class list included jazz history, theory, improvisation, and rehearsal periods as well as opportunities to be in small groups.
The purpose of this workshop, as Dr. Kenneth Carroll told the students multiple times, was to learn and have fun. Jazz is a timeless art form that deserves to be built upon. One interesting aspect of the jazz experience is thinking about how far back jazz goes. Some musicians of this age are playing music their grandparents listened to growing up as a child. The workshop provided opportunities to listen to different styles of jazz as well as get help on their concert music from ASU students volunteering their time.

Hill Middle School Band Director, Adam Webb, trumpet player, Lauren Dudley, former DHS jazz band member and now ASU music student, Erin Lauters, tenor saxophone, and Shae Baker, percussionist.
