Dexter, Missouri – The T.S. Hill Middle School students rocked the gym at the Hit for Hope Volleyball pep rally last Thursday afternoon.  The middle school band marched through the halls as they lead the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students into the gym.  There was wall-to-wall PINK!

Coach Becker took the microphone and away they went with cheers, dances and hitting the ball across the net.  Cheer competitions between the three grades erupted as they yelled    D E X T E R   B E A R C A T S and other battle cries throughout the gym.

A little Harlem Shake was added to the mix as well as a Hit For Hopes volleyball game with the girls hitting balls at the boys.  They had a really good time as the students cheered for their favorite volleyball player.

The baseball players and volleyball teams were introduced to their Bearcat fans.  The crowd went wild as they named each student.

The 7th Grade Lady Bearcats Volleyball Team is as follows: Rhylan Hillis, Megan Trout, Keri Williams, Morgan Aldridge, Hannah Thurmon, Lexie Barnes, Maci Daniels, Lauren Rascher, Nicole Sells, Bailee Williams, Addie Kruse, and Cassidy Bess.

The 8th Grade Lady Bearcats Volleyball Team is as follows: Morgan Ross, Macy Graves, Madison McConnell, Kelsey Kendrick, Kaylee Carey, Harley Allen, Kaylea Murdock, Lexi May, Ashlynn Wyman, Sydney Rogers, Janie Lindsey, and Cheyenne Mosby.

Coaches are Melissa Hahn and Kara Lummukka.  Student Managers are Michaela Gard and Zoe Schumer.
This is the third annual Hits for Hope Volleyball Game and is a wonderful fundraising opportunity for the girls to give to their favorite charity, Ben Kruse 18 FORE Life.  The girls were dressed in pink uniforms, pink whistles were used by the referees and the game is always played with a pink volleyball.

They had a silent auction in the lobby area with wonderful donations from the community.  Pink t-shirts were sold throughout the night with the Hits for Hope logo on the front.

The 18 FORE Life originated in 2000, when four friends got together an decided it would be fun to raise some money for a good cause by hosting a golf tournament. In 2002, love offerings were sent out for the first time to families all over Southeast Missouri battling cancer and in need of love, hope, and encouragement.

/images/Scott Kruse.gif After losing Ben Kruse in 2004, the event grew into much more than a golf tournament.  The phrase Celebrate/Give/Remember was coined and guided the efforts of organizers, sponsors, volunteers and golfers as hundred gathered for the 2005 event and over $100,000 was raised.

To date, 18 FORE Life has given away just under $900,000 in love offerings with plans to break the $1 million mark this year!

The 7th and 8th grade Lady 'Cats Volleyball Team is proud to host the Hits for Hope game and with the community's support they promise to continue this game annually.  They raised an amazing $6,500 during the Hits for Hope event!  Truly inspiring!

You can catch the Lady 'Cats Volleyball Team in action on April 4th at the Bearcat Event Center when they take on the Bloomfield Wildcats Volleyball Team.  Game time is 6:00 p.m.

They will have two more home games, April 8th at 6:00 p.m. and on April 11th at 6:00 p.m.  Both of these games will be held in the TS Hill Middle School gym.

Photos of the pep rally and the game can be seen on our Facebook page and under PHOTOS at the top of the ShowMe Times page.

Oak Grove's Playground Dedicated to Former Student

Poplar Bluff, Missouri - “Promise me you’ll always remember – you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.”

The students of Oak Grove Elementary School will know this Christopher Robin quote by heart since it is now placed on a mounted plaque for all of the students to see when they are playing at recess. The new playground at the elementary school will be officially open for use tomorrow on Thursday, March 28th.

This new place of freedom and fun for the younger students has been created in the memory of Ally Daughhetee, who was a second grade student who passed away in 2011. Her untimely passing has affected the community and they have made a special memorial at the new playground so she can be honored by the school, classmates, and other members of the community.

Ally’s father, Ronnie Daughhetee, has lived in Poplar Bluff for the majority of his life and he knew of the needs within the community for a new playground and new playground equipment. This new memorial includes $24,000 worth of new equipment, including a jungle gym. There have also been new pieces added to the old playground back behind the school so that recess can be assorted by grade level. The fundraisers held by the local PTO, proceeds from the Latchkey program, and the donation of Ronnie and his wife Melissa made the dream turn into a reality.

“The Daughhetee family continues to be active in the school and community,” Jenifer Richardson, current Oak Grove Principal, said. “They have blessed Oak Grove with a gift that was truly representative of Ally’s character. We are very appreciative of their generosity.”

The Daughhetees were contacted during the fundraising and have strived to keep Ally’s memory alive and well. They have added several stand-alone components to the recent project and will continue to do so. The playground was built in honor of Ally and her playful nature so that the students and local kids in the community will be active and playful as well while remembering their friend.

“She was a ‘sun up, sun down’ kind of girl,” her father, Ronnie, explained. “She played outside all day and lived every moment to the fullest.”

The students and faculty are ecstatic about the opening of the much needed playground. The plaque, equipment, and memory of Ally will always be honored at Oak Grove in remembrance of her.

Richland High School Monthly Update

Richland High School Monthly Update
A note from Mrs. Rhodes, High School Principal:

One more quarter to go! Our students have been achieving a lot of success in several activities! we have several students making it to the State level of competition in FCCLA, History Day, and FFA. FBLA and Library Club are representing Richland at their State conventions, as well.

At District History Day, out of approximately eighteen districts, Richland was one of the top for districts with the most awards won! We are also in the running for the Overall Sweepstakes Award.

Beta Club will be going to Nationals in Alabama in June. The Beta Club video of the campaign skit and speech performed in Branson were available to watch at the annual Talent Show. Videos of Jessica Shidler, the retiring State Secretary, and Kannon Qualls, the newly elected State Vice President, gave their speeches to over 1,000 Missouri Betas. It was amazing!

Congratulations to the Library Club for earning a Silver Banner in the Battle of the Belt competition along with all of our Scholastic winners. Jamie Smith said it best at History Day when she said, "Mrs. Rhodes, I think Richland is making a comeback." And she is right!

Our next hurdle will be the upcoming MAP and EOC exams. Teachers may be contacting parents in regarding tutoring in some of the areas that will be tested in as an added reinforcement and a way to bring up their test scores. It is important that students get plenty of rest and make every effort to be in attendance during testing.

Richland Talent Show

Richland Talent Show
Essex, Missouri -The annual Talent Show held at Richland High School was another great success. Although it was a busy day for Music and Band Director, Amber Duley, the show was a knockout. The bleachers and front row seats were filled with parents, grandparents, students, and other visitors. There were nearly forty different acts that took place last night (March 22nd) in the high school gymnasium.

Richland had annual talent shows many years ago and both the students and the faculty are glad to have it back.  Although it serves as a fundraiser for the Band and Music classes, it is also enjoyable for people of all ages. Over the past three years, it has had a remarkable turnout and continues to improve each year.

The show is so enjoyable because of the range of talent that the students show. There are multiple singing and dancing acts, skits, videos, and other great performances that are placed in a great line up so that the audience does not get tiresome.

Many of the great singing acts included a sixth grader, Kate Wyman, who performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on her ukulele. A group of high school students also formed a band together specifically for the talent show where they performed “Don’t Stop Believing”, with the lead singers being senior Jessica Shidler and freshman Jamie Smith. Smith also performed again later that night with nothing but a tambourine and her guitar, where she sang “The Only Exception”.

Many of the younger students took up the hobby of playing piano and they showed off their great talent last night. Kate Wyman performed “Knight Rupert” and also received a superior rating (1) at a local music festival she competed in. Eighth grader Aleena Robbins showcased the song “Curtains of Fire”. Sophomore Joe Foster competed in the District Musical Festival earlier that day and received a superior rating with Mozart’s piece “Rondo Alla Turca” and will be headed to state within the next few months.

Throughout the school year, the different organizations, clubs, and teams competed in a school-wide Call Me Maybe Video Competition. The volleyball team and the Marching Rebels both showcased their videos to the crowd. There were also many other videos that have been taken throughout the year that were shown in between acts on stage. The Junior Health Class and the Beta Club both participated in a Harlem Shake video, so the audience got to enjoy both of those performances.

There were also multiple dancing productions and the elementary students take great pride in each of their dances. This year, Duley created the Rebel Swag Dance Crew, which is a group of elementary students that practiced a hip-hop dance in their music class each week. The brother sister duo, Alexia Kemp and Hunter Sanders both danced to “Boom Boom Pow” and created a new favorite routine for the crowd.

The high school students also take great pride in their skits. In recent years, they have reenacted multiple Saturday Night Live skits including Target Lady, Church Lady, and Single Ladies. This year, the students of the senior class created a skit called “Bay Tay-Tay” which featured seniors Baylee Taylor, Becka Harden, Richard Forshee, Nick Daniels, and high school science teacher, Daniel Keegan. A group of high school boys also performed a Saturday Night Live skit that they now call a “Friday Night Live Skit: More Cowbell”. The skits are always a great hit with the crowd and are always very funny.

The grand finale always consists of a giant dance team of both high school and elementary students. In previous years, the students have danced to “Thriller” and “Dance Through the Generations”. This year, the song picked for the finale was “Gangnam Style”.

The students loved rehearsing and performing for the Talent Show and all of the audience and visitors also enjoyed the performances. It was another great turn out for Richland this year.
