12 For 12: DECA Students Make Mark At District

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - A group of Dexter High School students excelled at District DECA competition last week.

The DHS DECA (Distributive Educational Clubs of America) chapter participated in District 12 Competition on Tuesday, Feb. 8. The day's competitions were held in Dempster Hall on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

A total of 12 DHS students participated in the competition, and Chapter Advisory Tammy Crowley reports all 12 won trophies for their excellent work. Dexter students participating were:

  • Luke Robinson, first place, Principles of Finance
  • Austin Stacy, second place, Principles of Hospitality and Tourism
  • Sarah Davis, second place, Principles of Marketing
  • Elisha Flanignan, first place, Community Service Project
  • Logan Crowley and Glen Parker, first Entrepreneurship Promotion Project
  • Arriel McGowen and Taylor Robey, second place, Buying and Merchandising
  • Matt Blattman, Josh Galloway and Brennen Justice, second place, Advertising Campaign Event
  • Austin Seabaugh, second place, Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan


  • Crowley reports most of these students will have the opportunity to move on to the Missouri State DECA Leadership Conference on March 13-15 at the Lodge of the Four Seasons at Lake of the Ozarks.

DHS Jazz Band Excels At Contest

The DHS Jazz Cats performed in the Clark Terry/Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Festival hosted at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus in Cape Girardeau. This festival was based on a rating scale of Superior, Excellent, Good, or Needs Improvement. We performed:

"Yardbird Suite" - by Charlie Parker/arr. Mark Taylor, featuring soloists Linda Love on 2nd Trumpet and Brandon Moore on Alto Sax.

"Here's That Rainy Day" by Johnny Burke, arr. James Van Heusen, featuring soloist Brandon Moore.

"Spain" - arr. Paul Jennings, featuring soloists: Blake Kimbrough on 2nd Alto and Alex Rybolt on trombone.

And a new piece written by one of our own, "Hurry Along Now" by Brandon Moore, featuring soloist Joseph Greer on piano and Steven Harrellson on Tenor Saxophone.

One of many bands participating on the two-day festival, the Jazz Cats received a Superior Rating and Brandon Moore was selected as our "Outstanding Musician".

Three Rivers will once again host its annual Jazz Fest at the Tinnin Center at February 17-19, featuring middle school and high school jazz ensembles from across the area, the Jazz Alliance, and the Three Rivers College Jazz Band under the direction of Buddy White followed by a District Jazz Band rehearsal.

On Thursday night area jazz bands will be featured in concert on the Tinnin Center Stage. Admission is free.

The Friday evening concert will feature Jazz AllianceSaturday evening the District Jazz Band will perform at 7:00 p.m. at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center in Poplar Bluff. Tickets for this concert will be available at the Tinnin Center Box Office.

The district jazz band will rehearse following this Friday evening concert.

On Saturday evening, the Southeast Missouri All-District Jazz Band will perform in concert in the Tinnin Center beginning at 7 p.m. This is an auditioned group combined of all of the schools in Southeast Missouri. More than 80 percent of this year's All-District Jazz Band is from the DHS Jazz 'Cats.

We're very proud of our students, come out and hear them perform, as they represent our school, our town, and our District.
