Squirrel and black bass seasons open Memorial Day weekend

Missouri - Memorial Day weekend brings an extra-special celebration for squirrel hunters and bass anglers in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds them that the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, May 26, marks the opening of both squirrel season statewide and catch-and-keep bass season in most streams south of the Missouri River.

SQUIRRELS

Hunters can pursue fox squirrels and gray squirrels from May 26 through Feb. 15, 2019, with rifles, shotguns, and other legal firearms methods, along with archery equipment, slingshots, or atlatls. The daily limit for hunting and trapping is 10 with a possession limit of 20. Valid permits for squirrel hunting are: Archery Hunting, Daily Small Game, Small Game Hunting and Fishing, and Small Game Hunting.

Hunters with valid permits can also take squirrels with cage-type traps. Traps must be plainly labeled on a durable material with the user's full name and address, or conservation number. Squirrel traps must have openings measuring 144 square inches or less, for instance, 12 inches by 12 inches. Hunters must attend their traps daily. The same regulations apply to rabbits and groundhogs during their respective seasons.

BLACK BASS

The black bass catch-and-keep season applies to most streams south of the Missouri River for largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted or Kentucky bass and runs from May 26 to Feb. 28, 2019. Anglers may catch and release these species legally all year, anywhere in the state. They may keep legal-sized bass caught from impoundments and some rivers and streams all year long, statewide. In most of the state's waters, the daily limit on black bass is six. Black bass taken from rivers and streams must be at least 12 inches long in most areas. Additional specific regulations may apply to specific waters or areas. Anglers must have a valid fishing permit or be exempt.

Dexter Doubles Team Qualifies for Sectionals in Tennis

Cape Girardeau, Missouri - Dexter Bearcats boys tennis team "doubles team" qualified for the Individual Sectionals Tennis Tournament in Windsor on Tuesday.

Eric Hahn and Nate Gargas finished 2nd in doubles. They won their quarter final match 6-0, 6-0 over Devin Lincoln and Hayden Morrill of Notre Dame.

They won their Semi-Final match 6-1, 6-0 over Logan Harris and Les Copeland of North County High School. They then lost in the championship final 7-5, 4-6, 3-6 to Isaac Hopkins and Andrew West of Notre Dame.

Their 2nd place finish qualifies them to move on to the Sectionals round on Tuesday. If they win their one match on Tuesday, they will qualify for the State Tournament.

Logan Wyman and Travis Propst finished 3rd in the Individual Doubles Districts. They won their first round match 6-2, 6-1 against Lang Li and Grant Lawson of Sikeston. They lost their semi-final match 2-6, 3-6 to Isaac Hopkins and Andrew West of Notre Dame. They won their 3rd place match 6-3, 6-1 over Logan Harris and Les Copeland of North County High School.

Poplar Bluff HS March Athletes of the Month

The Mules Booster Club has named Shelbey Johnson and Turner Fritts of Poplar Bluff High School the March Athletes of the Month, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Turner, a senior baseball player, has a .611 batting average, .741 on base percentage, 12 hits, two doubles, one triple, five homeruns, 17 RBIs, 15 runs scored and five walks. He earned straight A’s during the first semester. He recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play ball for Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

“Turner is an outstanding young man that leads on and off the field of play,” his coach Steven Edwards said. “Turner is a true example of a leader we want to represent Poplar Bluff High School.”

Shelbey, a senior soccer player, has six goals and one assist in six games. She holds all scoring records for PBHS. In the classroom, she maintains a 10.458 grade point average. She signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer at Westminster College in Fulton.

“Not only a great athlete/competitor on the soccer field, but she is a great student in the classroom,” her coach Rusty Crafton said. “Shelbey strives to be the very best she can be on and off the field.”

Dexter Boys Tennis Team Wins Districts

Cape Girardeau, Missouri - The Dexter High School boys tennis team defeated Notre Dame 5-4 to win the Class 1, District 1 Championship on Tuesday evening.

The Bearcats won four of their six singles matches. This was their third District Championship in the past four years.

Singles

No. 1 Eric Hahn (D) defeated Isaac Hopkins (ND) 7-5, 6-0

No. 2 Nate Gargas (D) defeated Garrett Hesselrode (ND) 6-2, 6-3

No. 3 Logan Wyman (D) defeated Andrew West (ND) 6-4, 7-5

No. 4 Arjun Sahai (ND) defeated Matt Chesser (D) 6-4, 6-3

No. 5 Devin Lincoln (ND) defeated Blake Bolin (D) 7-5, 6-1

No. 6 Ryder Boles (D) defeated Hayden Morrill (ND) 6-4, 6-4

Boles was playing in place of Travis Propst, who missed the match because of illness.

Doubles

No. 1 Hahn/Gargas (D) defeated Hopkins/West (ND) 8-6

No. 2 Hesselrode/Sahai (ND) defeated Wyman/Boles (D) 8-4

No. 3 Lincoln/Morrill (ND) defeated Chesser/Bolin (D) 9-8 (4)

Dexter (8-8) lost to Notre Dame earlier in the season 5-4. They will play in sectionals on May 19th against an opponent yet to be determined.
