Valle Catholic Edges Bernie in Class 2 Baseball Quarterfinal

Valle Catholic Edges Bernie in Class 2 Baseball Quarterfinal

Ste. Genevieve, Missouri – Valle Catholic once again prevailed over the Bernie Mules rallying from a 2-0 second inning deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third and secured their 3-2 Class 2 baseball quarterfinal victory.

“We are hurting right now,” commented Bernie baseball coach Darrin Shipman.  “it is one of those games where we had a couple close calls that didn’t go our way and they capitalized on them.  You have to give them credit because they capitalized that one inning.”

Bernie collected two runs off of four hits in the second inning.  Brock Beacham got things going with a lead-off walk then Owen Foster and Gavin Brown hit a couple of singles.  Brown’s hit scored a runner from third putting the Mules on the scoreboard first.  Owen Foster scored from third base on a wild pitch to give the Mules their second run.

“Our kids played great,” stated Shipman.  “Devin and Brock threw great and our defense was good.  There was just that one inning, and that one call that was close, and I don’t know if he was out or safe.  It was close.  They got the call and they went on and got two big hits and scored three big runs after that.”

“Then we had a chance there in the end,” continued Shipman.  “That’s what I love about this team.  They don’t quit and we battled and gave ourselves one more chance in the seventh inning.  I was sure hoping we would pull it off and come back again, but you have to give them credit.  They are state champions for a reason.”

Valle Catholic tallied three runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Andrew Basler allowed three runs on four hits, struck out six and walked two as winning pitcher.

“I told the kids I thought we were a little over aggressive on pitches in the dirt,” Shipman said.  We swung at several in the dirt.  He kept throwing his curveball in the dirt and we kept going after it and a few high fastballs.  But give him credit also.  He settled down, kept the ball down and we hit a lot of ground balls and they made the plays.  Again, they are state champions for a reason.”

Bernie’s Brock Beacham relieved Devin Trammell in the final two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Trammell allowed only five hits the entire game.

“I thought he threw the ball great,” Shipman said of Trammell.  “He kept it down.  They hit a few good balls on him, but for the most part he got a lot of ground balls and we made the plays.  I thought he was outstanding.  Again, one close call at first of being out of the inning with no runs scored.  I though he pitched great and our defense played well behind him.”

Bernie ends their season with an impressive 24-6 record, one of the best seasons in Bernie history.  Matt Vernon and starting pitcher Devin Trammell both graduated this year from Bernie High School, but the Mules will return seven starters.

“Just a wonderful season,” continued Shipman.  “I told the kids hopefully this will motivate us to want to do it again next year.  We were one step closer and we have the opportunity to get better over the summer and fall and make another run at it next year.”

Bernie Mules Jaw-Dropping Comeback

Bernie Mules Jaw-Dropping Comeback

Bernie, Missouri – With play-offs well underway and history being made, it’s the time of year where the real contenders shine!   The Bernie Mules are the real deal when it comes to fighting their way back for a win!

The Mules scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie thing 4-4 and then scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure a 5-4 sectional victory over East Carter County.

“I always tell the kids, ‘it’s not over yet, we are going to go down as hard as we can fight,” commented Bernie head baseball coach Darrin Shipman.  “The kids just gutted it out!  There were some gutsy at-bats by everyone.  It’s just so great they pulled it out against an awfully good pitcher.”

Devin Trammell’s bases-loaded hit tied things up and kept the Mules fighting for another chance.

“I was not going down without fighting,” Trammel said.  “I knew I was going to put the ball in play.”

East Carter County Redbirds had their chance at the plate, but were unable to collect any runs in their final attempt at bat.

Jayce Burk stepped to the plate for Bernie with bases loaded and only one out hit a bouncer to right field scoring pinch runner Corbin Brown for the win.

“I was just trying to get a pitch I could handle after they intentionally walked Guzman,” stated Burk.  “He gave me one and I did the job.  We just wanted to get the job done and make history.”

History was made.  This was the first time the Mules have won a sectional game since 1962 when they defeated Cape Central.

In the other sectional game Valle Catholic defeated Greenville 8-0 in their Class 2 sectional on Monday.  Valle Catholic will now host Bernie on Wednesday, at 27th at 4:30 p.m.

Coach Shipman said Trammell is the probable starting pitcher against state ranked Valle Catholic.

“I want to be on the mound,” stated Trammell.  “I told coach that also.  I couldn’t get it done today pitching, but want another chance when it counts.”

Trammell pitched the first inning, but got hammered by a ball in the hip in the top of the first.  Coach Shipman removed him from pitching, but elected to keep him in the game.

“It hit me right on the bone of my hip,” Trammell said.  “He threw it hard to third because the runner was advancing and drilled me good.  I was looking the other way, but was in his way.”

“I walked over to him,” stated Coach Shipman.  “He said his hip was really hurting.  He was hit right on the bone and if he said it really hurt, it hurt.  He would usually never want to come out of a game, but he was hurting.  I asked Brock if he was ready and he said yes.  You cannot say enough about what Brock Beacham did today.  He was amazing.”

Beacham allowed only one run on four hits in seven innings.  “I knew I was going to come in if Devin got in trouble,” Beacham said.  “After that throw caught him I was like well crap I am about to come in.  I am just happy I threw well and we came back.”

Final Score Bernie 5, East Carter County 4

East Carter    0  0  0  2  0  0  2  1  -  4  7  0

Bernie            0  0  0  2  0  0  2  1  -  5  8  5

WP – Brock Beacham.  LP – Trever Lewis.  HR – Devin Trammell (B), Owen Foster (B)B.  2B – Trammell (B)B, Lane Crowley (EC), Lewis (EC).  Multiple hits – Bernie: Trammell 4-4, East Carter: Crowley 2-3.
