Bearcats Building Strength Preparing for the 2015 Season

Dexter, Missouri - High School Football season is just under two months away and the athletes are already on the field getting physical, learning new plays, and setting goals.

“I am very excited that the 2015 season has finally gotten underway,” commented Dexter head football coach Justin Peden.  “The first camp is always fun for the guys because they are getting back to doing something they love.

“Our turnout has been great and we have a lot of guys coming out who have either never played before or who are coming back to the game, which is great!”

Athletes have already been weight training, which is a major emphasis for the Bearcats.  They have been working out each morning in the weight room, building strength.

“We played in a 7on 7 tournament at Southeast Missouri State University on Saturday,” continued Peden.  “Teams from Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee and Indiana were there so it was nice to see new competition.”

The 7 on 7 Contact Camp hosted several teams from around area including Dexter, Cape Central, Jackson, Portageville, Kelly, Kennett, St. Vincent, Perryville, and Charleston as well as teams from outside of the southeast Missouri area.

“I just wanted us to go out there and play,” stated Peden.  “They developed chemistry and represented themselves very well.”

The Bearcats went 3-1 in pool play.  Their only loss was by one score.  They played Horn Lake, Mississippi, a 6A team and lost in the championship game.

“This group of young men have the potential to be very good,” Peden said of his 2015 football team.  “But it will take a lot of hard work from now to week one!”

You will have an opportunity to see the Bearcats on the field prior to the home opener.  On Friday, August 14th the Dexter Bearcats will host the Jamboree.  Teams participating and more details will be forthcoming in an updated article on the ShowMe Times.

The Class 3, District 1 2015 Football season will begin on Friday, August 21st at home against Ste. Genevieve.   The Bearcats lost by just 6 points last year on Dragon's home field, so let’s mark our calendars and show these athletes what kind of support we have for them!

Murray State One-Day Softball Camp Well Attended

Dexter, Missouri – Starla Pulley, head softball coach for Dexter Senior High School brought top coaches from Murray State University to a one-day softball camp held on Monday in Dexter.

Softball may be a spring sport at Dexter High School; however these girls have been training hard all summer long in preparation for their upcoming season.

Coaches from Murray State University were on hand Monday for the one-day camp for softball athletes from Dexter, Puxico, Malden, Bell City, and Sikeston.  Twenty-three athletes attended the camp in Dexter.

“This is our first time hosting a collegiate camp,” stated Pulley.  “I am sure we will host another one.”

Each athlete experienced an intensive program allowing them to improve their game.  Each player received individual instruction on batting skills like stance improvement, hit and runs, pull hitting, bunting and hitting for power, pitching skills that included pitching motions, release points, and communication between the pitcher and catcher, fielding skills for catching pop-flies and groundballs, performing relay throws and turning double-plays.

It was a very hot day in the Heartland and the girls learned about hydrating, drinking plenty of liquids as well as having a balanced meal during their work-out.

“The girls had a great time,” commented Pulley.  “They all left learning something new to make their game and respective team better.”

“In the fall I am hoping to have them back and work with our high school team as a whole to work on situational plays and individual positions,” continued Pulley.

The Dexter Lady Softball Cats are slated to play Oran on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the softball field on Grant St. across from Keller Public Library.  The public is encouraged to attend and enjoy an afternoon of softball fun!

“We are playing more summer ball and having camps to improve our program.  It is a work in progress.  The girls are invested and working very hard, that’s always nice to see.  WE have a lot of younger girls interested in softball and it’s important to keep young talent interested and love the game.  This will help build our program.”
