Homecoming Victory for the Bearcats!

Homecoming Victory for the Bearcats!

Dexter, Missouri – It was Homecoming Friday evening for the Dexter Bearcats!  After a long week of preparation for Friday night’s football game, it was a great night to be a BEARCAT!   Students celebrated all week with crazy dress-up days, a pep rally, designing posters and decorating the stadium, tailgate festival at the BEC just before the game, announcing the Homecoming Queen and ending the night with a win over the Kennett Indians for the 15th time in a row!

Had it not been for the game-winning drive in the closing minutes of the game, there would have been a different ending to this story!  Peyton Pollock #12, Dexter’s quarterback threw a short pass to Ethan Stevens with just 4:15 left in the game to tie Kennett 34-34.  It was all up to Jason Jarrell #10 to secure the victory and he hit one perfectly between the uprights.  Final score 35-34!  Way to go Bearcats!!

“Peyton did a really good job avoiding the pressure and scrambling around,” Dexter’s head football coach Justin Peden said.  “Our linemen kept trying to block and give him a chance.  The guys know if Peyton gets to scrambling to keep looking for someone to block because he can make something happen.”

Peyton Pollock passed to Austin Chesser #88 for a 24-yard touchdown to put Dexter on the board first against the Indians.  Jason Jarrell’s kick was good giving the Bearcats a 7-0 lead with 8:20 remaining in the first quarter.

Edward Wilson answered with a touchdown for the Indians, but Sion Pixley’s run was no good afterwards still giving Dexter a one-point advantage.

Dylan Bazarian wasted no time in the second quarter running up the middle for a 21-yard touchdown.  Jason Jarrell kicked another extra point giving the Bearcats a 14-6 lead going into the half.

Dexter scored first in the second half when Dylan Bazarian ran up the middle for an 8-yard touchdown.  Jason Jarrell perfect again for an extra point.  Bearcats 21 – Indians 6.

The fourth quarter was filled with touchdowns, six to be exact!  Edward Wilson hit Gooden again for a touchdown, but Kennett could not make the extra point.  Sion Pixley was taken down by a Bearcat again.

Fourteen seconds later Dylan Bazarian answered Kennett’s touchdown with one of his own.  He ran 40 yards for his third touchdown of the game and gave the Bearcats their largest lead of the contest 28-12.  Jason Jarrell’s kick was perfect!

The tied changed quickly when Kennett’s quarterback Edward Wilson wiped away the entire deficit in the next two minutes.  Wilson threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Johnie Brooks  then Brooks ran in for an extra two points.  Edward Wilson then took one in on his own scoring with a 35-yard touchdown and added two points with a conversion run.  Kennett tallied 16 points on two touchdowns to tie 28-28 with 7:43 left in the fourth quarter.

“Kennett has got some athletic kids and their quarterback gives them dimension, “stated Peden.  “He was able to run the ball and get outside on us.  We made some mistakes defensively.  We corrected it and went to a Cover Four, but they’ve got some good athletes and you have got to tip your hat to #25.  He is a good player.”

Dexter fumbled the ball away and Wilson took the advantage to run 70 yards on the next play to give Kennett their first lead of the game with 6:23 left in regulation.  Nathan Spence tried to kick the extra point for the Indians, but failed.  Kennett 34-Dexter 28.

Dexter’s sideline was brought to life yelling, “The games not over! We CAN do this!  We can beat them!”  Football players were yelling and slapping helmets and getting their offensive players pumped up!

It worked!  Carson Dean provided Dexter with great field advantage with his kick-off return brought down at Kennett’s 22-yard line.

“Great return,” Peden said.  “Carson had a fumble earlier and I think he wanted a little bit of redemption for that.  Once he hit the line he kind of hit another gear.  Carson’s got a little wiggle to him. He hit that crease and got it up field.  We were able to calm down, be methodical, get the ball in the end zone and get ahead, which was great!”

Peyton Pollock was able to find Ethan Stevens for the game-winning touchdown!  The Bearcats were determined to beat Kennett and they did for the 15 time in a row!

Ethan Stevens had a good night finishing the game with an amazing interception with just 1:27 remaining in the fourth quarter.  The Bearcats were celebrating all the way to the end of the game!

“We needed to know that we could do what we needed to do offensively with these guys,” stated Coach Peden.  “coach Beck, our Offensive Coordinator, makes the calls and was seeking something with their defense.  They shifted a lot so we would lineup, wait for them to shift and then make the call.  We made some big plays.  When our offense gets clicking and moving we can make big plays and then slow it down and grin it out running the ball if we want.  We have got a good balance and it really showed on that drive and the last drive that we are no one-dimensional.”

Ethan Stevens had six catches for a total of 61 yards.  Austin Aldridge had four receptions for a total of 96 yards.

Jason Jarrell was perfect 5 for 5 on extra-point attempts.

Noah Kronk had a team-high 14 tackles.  Dylan Bazarian had 10 tackles along with Drake Mitchell who added 9 tackles and Jason Mattison who tallied 8 tackles. /images/2014 Images/Pollock vs Kennett.jpg

The Dexter Bearcats had an amazing win over Kennett for their annual Homecoming!  They are not 3-3 on the season and 2-1 in their conference.

Dexter will be back in action when they travel to New Madrid County Central on Friday night.  Game time 7:00 p.m.
