Dexter, Missouri - The Lady ‘Cats improved their record to 3-1 winning both set against Cape Central 25-10, 25-15.

“I thought the girls played well the first game,” commented Dexter head coach Carmen Morgan.  “We didn’t play well the second game.  We didn’t do what we should have done.  I don’t know if we came out just a little bit lackadaisical, but there wasn’t much focus.”

The Lady ‘Cats earned nine straight points to start the night and never trailed in the first set.  It was a different story in the second set when the Bearcats found themselves behind the Tigers 3-1.

“We don’t want to ever get too comfortable,” continued Morgan.  “You can’t let a team have two, three or even four points on you in a row.  Because this game of rally scoring isn’t like the old ones where you could come back as easy.”

After a quick time-out, a moment to regroup and fix strategy, the Bearcats fought back and were able to tie the game.  Dexter then went on a 13-3 run to place them in a winning position.

“We pretty much made the mistakes ourselves,” added Morgan.  They were serving a couple hard balls that were hitting our corners and we weren’t adjusting to those.”

"There were times we hit," Morgan continued. "The second game all we did was tip for a while and that got old. We scrambled a little bit that second game. It's early and we are still trying to get it all together."

Senior Jessica Lindsey led the Bearcats with a team-high 7 kills. Senior Shyann Jines finished the evening with 5 kills. Kendall Adams earned one ace.  Junior Julia Hahn had one kill.  Freshman Krysten Garrison had a team-high 8 aces and 4 kills.

“She had a good night serving,” Morgan said of Garrison.  “I tell them three to one ratio, where if you hit three you can miss one.  She served well and hit some good balls as well.  I thought she had a good game all the way around.”

Dexter (3-1) will travel to Cape Girardeau to play in this weekend’s Notre Dame Volleyball Fest.  The Lady ‘Cats will compete against St. Pius, Cape Central, and Ste. Genevieve.  It all begins Friday evening at 5:45 p.m. against St. Pius.

"We better put it together going up there," Morgan said. "There aren't hardly any teams in that tournament you can let go on a run. We better come ready to play because everybody else will be ready."

The JV Lady 'Cats also defeated the Cape Central Tigers 25-8, 25-9.  Way to go JV!

Bearcat Boys Basketball to Remain in SEMO Conference Tournament

Bearcat Boys Basketball to Remain in SEMO Conference Tournament

Written by
Dee Loflin, SMT Manager/Editor

Dexter, Missouri - The Dexter varsity boys’ basketball team will once again participate in the SEMO Conference Tournament.  Dexter competed in the SEMO Conference last season, but chose not to take part in the tournament.

Dexter has typically not performed well in wins at the tournament with a record of 2–13 only defeating Caruthersville in 2006 and Kennett in 2007.

Schools participating in the SEMO Conference for basketball are Dexter, Notre Dame, Cape Central, Jackson, Charleston, Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, Kennett, and New Madrid County Central.

Dexter is one of only a few schools in the entire state of Missouri that chooses to participate in two conferences.  The Bearcats also compete in the Stoddard County Athletic Association (SCAA) Conference and play in the SCAA Conference Tournament.  Schools in the SCAA Conference are Bloomfield, Dexter, Bernie, Bell City, Woodland, Richland, Advance, and Puxico.

Last season, the Dexter School Board allowed the boys basketball team to opt out of the SEMO Conference Tournament, but that time, the SEMO Conference passed a new By-Law stating “any team that chooses not to participate in the Tournament will be assessed $500.00:

The choice was either to completely get out of the SEMO Conference Tournament and keep the same basketball schedule as last year or pay the fine. During the 2013-14 season, because of an odd number of teams playing in the conference, Dexter was only guaranteed one game in the tournament unless they won, and therefore elected to bow out of the SEMO Conference Tournament. They remained in the Conference, but by not playing in the tournament, they were allowed to pick up two additional regular season games against Perryville and Twin River.

On a recommendation to the School Board by Dr. Thomas Sharp, Superintendent, Mr. Derek Urhahn, Athletic Director and High School Asst. Principal, and new head basketball coach Josh Dowdy.  “We felt that it was best for our program to keep the schedule the same as last year.  By having to play in two conferences and conference tournaments, we can only schedule one game outside the two conferences,” stated Dowdy.

Since 2008, the Dexter boys’ basketball team’s record is 4–55 against SEMO Conference Schools.

The Dexter School Board voted to place the boys’ basketball team back into play at the SEMO Tournament.  “Our schedule may look a little different this year, but our approach will remain the same,” stated Dowdy.  “It was a tough decision for anyone to make, but the Board elected that we remain in both conferences and we trust they know what is best for our kids and our basketball program.”
