Kennett, Missouri - You might expect a two-sport high school athlete to move on to college with a full-ride scholarship, but that was not in the immediate future for Kevonte Mitchell of Kennett, Missouri.  Though he did sign with the Southeast Missouri Redhawks, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to play for the Chicago Cubs.

Kevonte is having the time of his life.  "It feels great to be a Cub!  I love this organization and the people in it," Mitchell stated.

Mitchell was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 13th round of the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft as an outfielder and designated hitter.  He was the 379th overall pick of the draft.

“It was the best day of my life,” commented Mitchell when he heard his named called.

He was a star athlete at Kennett High School, playing both basketball and baseball for the Indians.  At 6’4” and 185 lbs he batted .440 for Kennett’s baseball team as a senior.  He tallied 23 RBIs, 33 runs including 7 doubles, 2 triples, and 4 homeruns.

Mitchell is young to be drafted at only 18 years of age, but his decision to play professional was not difficult! With just a little specialized training he has the potential to make a great ballplayer for the Cubs.

We wish Kevonte much success with his future endeavors!  We hope to see you on the field!!
