Dexter, Missouri – The search is over for the new varsity boys basketball head coach at Dexter Senior High School. The announcement came on Friday afternoon when the Board of Education officially released the minutes from their meeting approving the hiring of teacher Josh Dowdy to the position.
Coach Dowdy is a 1993 graduate of Dexter and his wife, Alana, graduated in 1994. He has two children, Ellie age 9 and Ben age 8 who attend Dexter Public Schools. He enjoys a good game of golf, Cardinal baseball and camping with friends and family.
Dowdy played basketball under Coach Hall and baseball under Coach Nugent and Asst. Coach Brian Becker. He was also a student body President during his high school career. He graduated from Murray State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and holds a Masters Degree in Secondary Administration from William Woods College.
“This is not just a coaching job to me,” commented Coach Dowdy. “This school and this community mean so much to me. This is my home and I can’t wait to share my BEARCAT pride with these boys!”
Coach Dowdy has several years of experience. He served as an assistant under Chad Allen at Puxico back in 2006 and was part of the Indians’ varsity boys district championship that season. He took over for Allen as head coach the next season. He later accepted the varsity boys basketball coaching position at Advance High School and was also their Athletic Director. He was 56-27 at Advance during his reign.
His most recent coaching position was with the Dexter T.S. Hill Middle School where he coached 7th and 8th grade boys basketball. The 7th grade boys won the SCAA Tournament and completed their season 13-1 and the 8th graders finished 10-5.
“I plan to coach my players and not necessarily a system,” continued Dowdy. “It is not what system you run, but how you run it that counts.”
Dowdy is currently searching for an assistant as well. Varsity Asst. Coach and JV Coach Mr. Shawn Guethle resigned this year to further his career outside of the Dexter Public Schools.
If you have never had the opportunity to watch Dowdy coach a basketball game, well you are in for a real treat! He coaches with a lot of enthusiasm and loves basketball. He coaches with a great amount of energy and passion for the game and whether it’s on the court or off, he loves his players, he helps his players, he loves coaching and his enthusiasm for the sport is quite contagious.
When asked what he will bring to the basketball court, “I guarantee only two things. We will play hard and we will do it with class!”
Congratulations Coach Dowdy! We look forward to seeing you and the Bearcats on the court very soon.

Dexter, Missouri – After rain suspended play on Monday, the Dexter varsity boys tennis team took to the court again this afternoon under cloudy skies and light rain to defeat the DeSoto Dragons. Despite a brief rain delay and more precipitation throughout the match, the Bearcats roared to a finish and secured their district quarterfinal 6 - 0.
“DeSoto is one district team we didn’t get to see much in the reguarl season, commented Dexter’s boys tennis coach Kurt Lovelady. “I thought we got seeded a little low, but we have got to beat every team to move on anyway so it doesn’t really matter.” Dexter was seeded #4 in the Class 1 District 1 play-offs. DeSoto was seeded #5.
Dexter will now travel north to take on the Notre Dame Bulldogs on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. pending weather.
“We have a lot of momentum going right now,” Lovelady said. “A lot of our younger guys are playing well. Zach Potts is hitting the ball a lot better and everything is going right for us right now.”
There was an extra delay of game during Zach Potts match at Boon Park when a neighbor's puppy decided chasing the yellow balls was just too much fun! Once the poor little fella was removed from the court Zach continued his serve. Photos are available on the ShowMe Times facebook page.

Dexter, Missouri - For those of you who are missing Bearcat Basketball, you’ll be in for a real treat as the Rib City Shootout returns this summer.
This will be the 5th year for the Shootout and it is now the premier summer event for basketball teams in the region. According to Chad Allen more than 350 teams are expected to compete this summer from at least 5 different states on the courts in the Bearcat Event Center, Middle School, High School, or at the Southwest Elementary School. They have available 7 courts on the Dexter school campus.
The dates for the 2014 Rib City Shootouts have been released and will be held in Dexter, Missouri.
The boys varsity, junior varsity and middle school basketball shootouts will take place on June 6th & 7th, June 19th & 20th, and again on July 11th & 12th.
The girls varsity, junior varsity, and middle school basketball shootouts will take place on May 30th & 31st, June 13th & 14th, and July 18th & 19th.
The only volleyball shootout will be held on June 26th & 27th.
The Rib City Shootout was developed in 2010 to provide athletes a setting in which to compete and improve during the off-season. These shootouts were created as an inexpensive way for varsity, junior varsity and middle school teams to experience a beneficial off-season developmental opportunity. Each team will play a minimum of six games with eight games possible.
Got to their website www.ribcityshootout.com to learn more about these awesome two-day events.
For more information contact Dexter varsity girls basketball coach Chad Allen at ribcityshootout@gmail.com or at 573-421-4571.
This year they have added three-day All Star Fundamental Individual Camps run by some of the area’s leading coaches at Dexter on July 14th – 16th and at Farmington on June 23rd – 25th.
Coaches participating in the three-day camps are Darin Scott of Jackson High School, Brad Botsch of Bernie High School, Jim Vaughan of Kennett High School, Chad Allen of Dexter High School, Louis Bell of Clearwater High School, and Dusty Dinkins of South Iron High School.
