Dexter MS Bearcats Open Season with Success
Dexter, Missouri- On Tuesday night the Middle School Dexter Bearcats opened up their season against the Woodland Cardinals.  Both the 7th and 8th grade Bearcats looked good in their opening games against the Cardinals.

The 7th grade team started out well in the opening quarter jumping out to an early lead scoring eight points the Cardinals managing two points.  Woodland came charging back, narrowing the gap by scoring 13 points in the second quarter.

Dexter had slowed down in the second only scoring nine and seeing their halftime lead diminish to 17-15. In the second half the 7th grade Bearcats picked up their momentum and never looked back.  The Bearcats scored 13 in the final two quarters and was able to hold the Cardinals to seven total points in the final half.

The 7th grade Dexter 'Cats won the game by the final score of 43-22.  The 7th grade team was led in scoring by Gabe Jackson with 22 points.  Spencer Owens and Bo McMullin both had 7 points apiece for the Cats.

/images/Sports/ms dex boys vs wood small.jpgThe 8th grade Bearcats saw just as much success as the 7th grade did in their game.  The 8th grade Bearcats started the game out hot, scoring 16 points and allowing only 8 to the opposing Woodland Cardinals.  Led by some great shooting by Jason Jarrell with 13 points in the first quarter the Cardinals couldn't keep up.

The Cardinals answered with better defense in the second quarter but couldn't get their offense going, only managing four points in the quarter.  At halftime the Bearcats led by the score of 25-12.

After halftime the Bearcats came out very aggressive on offense scoring 18 points to the Woodland Cardinals 6.  The Bearcats played tough defense in the final quarter to put the Cardinals away by the final score of 51-19.  The 8th grade 'Cats were led in scoring by Jason Jarrell with 21 points in the game.  The Bearcats also saw a strong performance by Jackson Babb who had 9 points.

Both of these teams played well as a team with strong defense, good rebounding, and passing to get their first wins of the season.  Both teams will be on the road next week against the Advance Hornets at 6:00 PM.

Dexter Falls to Notre Dame

It was the last regular season game for the Dexter Lady Bearcat Volleyball team as they traveled to Cape Girardeau last night to take on the Notre Dame Lady Bulldogs.

It was a much anticipated volleyball game as Notre Dame always supplies tough competition in all their sporting events.

Dexter came out strong for the game as they all knew it was the last regular season game and they needed to make it count. The Bearcats put up a hard fight but in the end it was the Bulldogs who took over for the win in just two sets. That’s not to say that the sets were an easy win for the Bulldogs though. Dexter kept the momentum going during both sets and never let Notre Dame run away with a big lead.

The first set was the closest as neither Dexter nor Notre Dame was ready to let the other take the victory. The lead bounced back and forth between the two teams until finally Notre Dame stretched ahead by two points and took the first set 24-26.

Notre Dame seemed to have a stronger defense up against Dexter’s offense in the second match, however. The Bearcats didn’t have much of a chance to get kills in a position where the Bulldogs couldn’t return them. The second match was still close, but this time Notre Dame pulled ahead with a slightly larger lead as they won 25-18.

The Dexter Lady Bearcat volleyball team has proved all year long that they are strong, tough, and willing to be coached in order to take big victories over a few of their rival competitions.

Coach Morgan has stepped into the head coach position for the team this year and really has the talented team coming together and showing off their skills. There have been a few tough matches where other teams pulled ahead and won a game or two, but that doesn’t mean Dexter hasn’t put up a hard fight all season.

This year, the Bearcat team consists of some young members who are seeing varsity action for the first time. With the injury of Jessica Lindsey earlier in the season, a couple freshmen have stepped out onto the court in hopes of helping the team keep their momentum in each game. The amount of talent on this young team is impressive to say the least.

The Dexter Bearcat Varsity volleyball team will start district competition next week, which is being held at the Bearcat Event Center.  Good luck to the Dexter Bearcats throughout their District Competition!

JV Bearcats Take On Jackson

JV Bearcats Take On Jackson
Dexter, Missouri- On Monday night under the lights of Charles "Seed" Bland Stadium the Dexter Junior Varsity Bearcats took on the Jackson Indians.  The Bearcats came into the game after a long layoff, without playing a game for the last two weeks.

Before the game had started the JV Bearcats knew it would be a tough match-up with the Jackson Indians.  The Indians regularly field teams with a combination of size mixed with plenty of players that have speed.

The game started fast as the Indians took the kickoff and proceeded to march the ball down the field ending in a quick touchdown drive, two point conversion, and an 8-0 lead.

Dexter couldn't answer with points of their own in the first quarter, however the Bearcats played well on defense.  They held the Indians scoreless the remainder of the 1st quarter.

In the second quarter the JV Bearcats continued with their "bend but don't break" defense for the majority of the half.  At the 3:38 mark in the second, Jackson drove down the field and scored on a seven yard pass into the end-zone.  The two point conversion made the score 16-0.

Dexter received the ball on the kickoff and couldn't manage to get their offense going against an aggressive Jackson Indian defense.  Jackson got the ball back quickly and scored a rushing touchdown and two point conversion to put the Indians up 24-0 at halftime.

/images/Sports/jv dex jax small.jpgIn the second half it was much of the same as the Indians scored another touchdown and two point conversion to give them a 32-0 lead.

With 6:35 left in the 3rd quarter the Bearcats finally got on the scoreboard with a long touchdown run around the left side of the line by the running-back.  With a failed conversion the score was 32-6 in favor of the Jackson Indians.

The Indians scored again in the 3rd quarter and the final quarter to put the final score at 46-6.  This was the final game on the Junior Varsity Bearcats schedule this year.  It was a tough year for the JV Bearcats but they learned plenty of lessons throughout the year and will come back next year with more experience.
