Bearcats To Compete In Lions All Star Game
The 36th Annual Missouri Lions All-Star Football Game will be played in Warrensburg on Saturday, July 21st. The game features outstanding 2012 graduated high school football players from the entire state. Pre-game festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Walton Stadium/Vernon Kennedy Field on the UCM Campus.

The annual affair was created in order to benefit the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation and has raised nearly $200,000 for this statewide Lions project. The game pits some of the top football talent from around the state to play one last game with and against their peers before entering the world of college or other careers. The game is divided into Blue and Gold Teams. Heading this year’s Blue squad will be Coach Nathan Morgan of Caruthersville High School, and the Gold team will be piloted by Coach Dustin Baldwin of Miller High School.

The players and coaches arrived at UCM on Sunday, July 15th. The week will be spent getting acquainted, learning plays and two-a-day practice sessions. It will culminate with the banquet Friday evening, July 20th, with Westran High School Coach (and last year’s All-Star Gold Team Coach) Curtis Jasper as the keynote speaker, and the game at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21st. Tickets for the game will be available at the gate on game day at only $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students.

The Missouri Lions are pleased to announce that this year’s game will be broadcast live on KKWK (100.1 FM) Radio in Cameron, MO, and at NorthWestMOInfo.com.

The Fighting Squirrels Are Off to Colorado
By: Taylor Eggimann ShowMe Times Staff Writer

Charleston- On Wednesday night (July) at Hillhouse Park, the Charleston Squirrels did what no one thought they could. At the Senior Babe Ruth State Tournament, the Poplar Bluff Thunder was the team to win it all, but the Squirrels had something else in mind.

The Thunder (36-6) went undefeated in the double elimination tournament staying in the winner's braquet until Wednesday night. The Squirrels were needing to force two games out of the Thunder and give them their first loss, so they gave the ball to Bloomfield's Paul Fox.

In the first game, Fox seemed a little shaky in the top of the first charged with giving up four runs (one earned) in the top of the first inning because of two infield errors by the Squirrels and a double by Poplar Bluff's Scott Foster. After the first inning the Squirrels calmed down and put it behind them. Fox didn't seemed phased by the first inning and continued to work around the batters and quiet the Thunders lineup to just three hits the rest of the game. Fox threw all seven innings and struck out nine on one hundred and one pitches. The Squirrels won 11-5.

In the second game Advance's Ryan Moses was on the mound. All he wanted to do was win that game, so he threw his first shutout of his career. He never tried anything fancy and knew that he had defense ready to play behind him. They then won 9-0.

The Charleston Squirrels are now the Senior Babe Ruth State Champs for the second year in a row. They will be on their way to the Midwest Plains Regional in Montroe, Colorado.

Good Luck Squirrels! Keep on fighting your way to the top!

Rib City Shootout Returns This Weekend

By Andrew Cato, ShowMe Times Sports Editor

Area basketball fans are in for a treat this weekend with the return of the Rib City Shootout.

The Shootout, now in its third year, has quickly become the premier summer event for basketball teams in the region; this summer has already seen one week of boys action with 45 teams from three states competing in 145 games.

Tournament organizers are busy preparing for the fourth week of this summer's shootout, and the second week featuring boys competition, where basketball fans can see 57 teams from Missouri and Arkansas converging on seven courts - three at the Bearcat Event Center, the DHS, DMS, and Southwest Elementary gyms, and the DPR Gym, located next to the Dexter Aquatic Center - during this weekend's (July 13-14) shootout.

The Bearcats will be represented on all levels - Middle School, JV and Varsity - for the first time this summer; the Varsity squad kicks things off Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the BEC, while the JV squad opens competition at 3:00 p.m. in the Middle School. The 8th grade squad opens at noon on Friday at the DPR gym, while the 7th graders start at 9:45 in the BEC.
