Bearcats Run-Rule No. 4 Sikeston

SIKESTON - A squeeze play in the third inning would give the Dexter Bearcats a 5-4 lead that they never gave up in the opening round of the 2012 SEMO Conference Tournament.
With the bases loaded and no outs, senior Owen Flowers laid down a perfect bunt on the third base line to drive home Logan Northern and take a 5-4 lead.
"I don't know how gutsy it was, but it was the right thing to do at the time," head coach Brian Becker said of the play. "Owen's been doing a great job of getting bunts down for us all year, and he got a good one down there and got us the lead."
The 'Cats would add ten more runs to their total to end the game after the sixth inning due to the ten-run rule and complete the upset of the No. 4 Sikeston Bulldogs. Becker noted that his squad felt slighted after being ranked fifth in the tournament, despite holding a regular-season victory over Sikeston.
"That feels good. We had a good week of practice; whenever the kids found out that we were the five seed, they felt a little disrespected," he said. "That's the best week of practice we've had in a long time, and we came out on a mission today. I'm proud of them."
"I've been here 22 years, and I don't remember the last time we beat them twice in a season," Becker added. "Sikeston has a great program, there's no doubt about that. They have some kids that can play baseball on their team, and to sweep them for the season says a lot about the direction of our program."
Senior right-hander Alex Cliff (3-2, 2.83 ERA) hurled all six innings for the Bearcats, giving up five runs (one earned) and six hits while striking out four batters.
"Cliff only gave up one earned run the whole game; he had the kid struck out there in the second inning, we just couldn't find the ball," Becker said. "They hit one there that hit off the heel of Owen's glove, but he made a good play on it. Cliff had his changeup and curveball working well today, and I'm proud of him and our team for coming out and run-ruling Sikeston; that doesn't happen very often."
Brad Potts led the way for the Bearcats at the plate, going 3-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Flowers was 1-2 with two RBI's and a run scored.
The 'Cats will move on to face No. 1 Notre Dame in the SEMO Conference semifinals; the Bulldogs blanked No. 8 NMCC in their opening round contest.
The Bearcats fell to the Bulldogs 4-2 in the regular season, but that 'Cats had plenty of opportunities to get a win in the game with 13 stranded base runners.
"Last time, we had runners all over the basepaths, but we couldn't get them home," Becker said. "Hopefully we can change that tomorrow."

Softball Shuts Out Senath-Hornersvile

SENATH - The Lady 'Cats cruised to a 9-0 victory against Senath-Hornersville on Thursday afternoon thanks to a dominant pitching performance from starter Becky Anderson and a solid defensive performance by the entire team.
The senior right-hander hurled a complete game, three-hit shutout including six strikeouts. Anderson also had a solid day at the plate, going 3-3 with two RBI's, one run scored, and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
Ashley Brown plated Dexter's first run on an error in the top of the first inning. The Lady Lions stranded a baserunner on second in the bottom of the inning.
Tiffany Watson led off with a walk in the second inning, but was caught trying to steal second base. Taylor Owens reached base on an error and was brought home by triple from Anderson. The third inning saw the 'Cats with the bases loaded, but unable to score.
Brown's sac fly to center in the fourth brought Anderson home to increase the lead to 3-0. The Lions had runners in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but line-outs to third base and the pitcher allowed the 'Cats to keep the shutout alive.
The Lady 'Cats put together a two-out rally in the fifth, with Owens and Anderson collecting RBI's. The Bearcats struck for three runs in the top of the sixth inning, thanks to a triple from Emily Triplett; in the seventh, Triplett came through with an RBI single to plate the ninth and final run of the game.
"Senath is a good, young team. They put the ball in play and forced us to play solid defense," head coach Leonard Morse said after the win. "Our girls rose to the challenge and played incredible defense behind Becky. Every player was involved, with our infield turning a double play."
The 'Cats collectively hit .267 in the contest, but Morse attributed outstanding pitching by the Lions for the relatively slow day at the plate. "Our offense was kept off balance by Senath's freshman pitcher who continuously threw the high strike. We popped up too many times for comfort," he said. "Our girls continued to plug away and steadily increased their lead. They really came together as a team and continued to play well in support of each other."
"I am very proud of them and how much they have improved throughout the season. We have two games left next week with Advance and Twin Rivers, both of whom are very good teams with good pitching," Morse added. "Those games look to be an exciting way to finish a great season."
The Lady 'Cats increase their record to 12-6 with the win; they will take the field again on Monday (April 30) when they host the Advance Lady Hornets, who defeated the 'Cats 15-1 in last week's SCAA Championship game.

Bearcat Tennis Blanks Sikeston

The Bearcat tennis team responded to a disappointing loss to Cape Central with a sweep of the Sikeston Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon.
The 'Cats picked up a 9-0 win in the Varsity-only contest.
Tyler Miller, Noah Kronk, and Jacob Robinson all blanked their respective opponents in singles competition; Kronk and Robinson also picked up an 8-0 win in doubles.
Miller and partner Sam Ward defeated James Hines and Mark Jones 8-2 in doubles, while Kyle Willis and Joseph Greer picked up an 8-1 win over Alex Hahn and Sydney Gadberry.
The 'Cats will be on the court again Tuesday (May 1), when they travel to Sikeston for a 4:00 p.m. rematch with the Bulldogs.

Lady 'Cats Pummel Bloomfield, 26-6

BLOOMFIELD - The Lady Bearcats defeated Bloomfield in a run rule contest to open the SCAA Tournament last week.
They did it again on Wednesday afternoon.
The 'Cats had another outstanding day at the plate and cruised to an easy 26-6 victory over the Wildcats to improve to 10-6 on the season.
Riley Rickman was on the hill for the Lady 'Cats; the sophomore right-hander gave up five hits, six runs (all earned), and nine walks while striking out six in the win. Rickman made up for runs she gave up with an outstanding day at the plate, going 4-4 with three runs scored, five RBI's, and a walk.
The 'Cats hammered Bloomfield starter Summer Griffin early and often, racking up 10 runs in the first inning. Rickman drove in two runs with a one-out single; catcher Tiffany Watson followed up with a single to re-load the bases. Whitney Layton drove an RBI single to left-center during her second at-bat.
The Wildcats struck for three runs in the bottom half of the first inning; Stephanie Lambert drove an RBI single to left field to cut Dexter's lead to 10-3.
Becky Anderson, who was issued a leadoff walk, was driven in by a ground-rule double from Maddie Christian; Ashley Brown and Whitney Layton both took home on pass-balls to increase the lead to 14-3. Emily Triplett smacked an inside-the-park home run to right field to plate the final run of the inning.
Lambert came through with an RBI double in the bottom of the second for Bloomfield's only run in the inning, but the Lady 'Cats still held a big 15-4 lead.
The top of the third was the only inning the Lady 'Cats didn't go through the lineup; Layton crossed home plate after tagging up on a Triplett fly-out. Rickman connected on a deep triple for her fourth RBI of the game to put the score at 19-4.
The Wildcats were able to score in the bottom of the third to avoid the 15-run rule, but the Lady 'Cats drove in seven more runs in the top of the fourth inning to put the game out of reach and pick up a 26-6 victory in four innings of play.
The Lady 'Cats will be back in action on Thursday, when they hit the road for a 4:30 p.m. contest at Senath-Hornersville.
