December 19th 2011 by Unknown

The Lady Miners (8-0) recorded season-highs in points (77), field goal percentage (56 percent) and made three’s (6) to keep its undefeated start to the season going. On the flip side though they allowed a season-high in points scored.
The game was a see-saw affair in the opening half with four ties and 16 lead changes. S&T led by as many as seven in the opening half but were unable to shake the Blue Jays (6-1).
Westminster was able to stay in the game due to the Lady Miners turning it over 12 times resulting in 16 points. The Jays also had the edge on the offensive glass with eight rebounds turning those into five second chance points.
S&T held a 36-29 edge with 1:31 to play in the first half thanks to back-to-back three’s from Toni Knar. Westminster cut the lead to a basket on a three from Leigh Ann Lutz and a jumper by Talisha Washington right before the break.
The Lady Miners shot 65 percent (13-for-20) from the floor in the opening frame and were able to stay in front in large part due to the production from the bench. S&T’s bench scored 16 points in the stanza.
The Blue Jays continued to hang around at the start of the second half as a three from Rachel Backes kept the back-and-forth contest going. A Julie Meyer jumper tied the game at 42 before Liz Klaffenbach gave the Jays its last lead of the game on a lay-up at the 17:21 mark. Meyer converted an old-fashioned three-point play a minute later giving S&T a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. The lead grew to nine on a three from Dexter native Katelyn Heil at the 7:27 mark and Westminster wouldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.
Heil gave the Lady Miners a double digit lead scoring four straight points on a pair of free throws and a fast break lay-up with 5:39 left in the contest.
S&T salted it away thanks to a 10-1 run behind six points from Heil including another fast break basket with less than two minutes to play.
The Lady Miners were 15-for-30 from the floor in the second half and 10-for-12 at the foul line. They finished the contest 28-of-50 from the field, 6-for-12 from behind the arc and 15-of-20 at the foul line. They also had a 34-to-22 edge on the glass.
Heil scored a career-high 16 points to lead four players in double figures. Her previous career-high also happened to come against Westminster scoring 13 on Dec. 12, 2009. Hailee Parks added 14, Meyer had 13 and Courtney Kemp finished with 10. Meyer also had eight rebounds.
The Blue Jays were led by Lutz with 15, Backes added 12 while Hannah Kloster dropped in 10. Westminster shot 40 percent (23-for-58) for the contest and was 7-for-20 from downtown.
S&T returns to action after the Christmas break when it travels to Findlay, Ohio to take on the University of Findlay on Thursday, Dec. 29, at 4:30 p.m. (CST).
