Dexter, Notre Dame Girls Advance To Championship

DEXTER, Mo. - Semifinal action on the Girls’ side of the Class 4, District 1 Tournament bracket was on display Wednesday (Feb. 23) night, with No. 2 Dexter facing off against No. 3 Ste. Genevive in the 6:00 p.m. contest and No. 4 Sikeston looking to upset No. 1 Notre Dame in the nightcap.

No. 3 Ste Genevive vs. No. 2 Dexter

Dexter took control of the game early, giving up only five points in the opening frame. Alison Jarrell hit her first of five threes in the contest during the first quarter, pushing the Lady ‘Cats to a 19-5 lead after the frame.


 Abbey Meyer scored all but one of Ste. Gen.’s 11 points in the second quarter. Erika Cobb and Jarrell each hit threes for the ‘Cats in the second quarter. Dexter held a big 35-16 lead going into halftime.

Jarrell was good from three-point land two more times in the third quarter, and Harris put up eight points. Dexter’s defense stepped up, holding the Hunters to only five points in the frame, and building up an impressive 55-21 lead at the end of the frame.

Laura Rhoades hit a deep trey for the Hunters early in the fourth, but was quickly answered by Jarrell. Both teams’ benches got extensive action at the end of this blowout, with Dexter winning 62-27. The Lady Bearcats will move on to Friday (Feb. 25) District Championship game, where they will face the winner of the contest between No. 4 Sikeston and No. 1 Notre Dame.

In the nightcap, No. 4 Sikeston looked to pull off the first upset of the Girls’ side of the bracket against No. 1 Notre Dame.

Summer Burger put in 5 points for Notre Dame in the first. Taneshia Pulley had an opportunity for a three-point play for Sikeston, but couldn’t connect on the free-throw. Notre Dame led after the first quarter, 12-6.

Allyson Bradshaw hit two threes in the second quarter, helping Notre Dame ease out to a 10 point advantage early in the frame. Sikeston battled back late in the quarter, thanks to big buckets from Keyonna Blissett and Pulley. Notre Dame held a slim six point lead going into halftime, 28-22.

Darqueisheonna Howard was good from beyond the arc for Sikeston early in the third quarter, but she was quickly answered by Bradshaw. Miranda Fowler hit back-to-back threes for Notre Dame to give them a 12 point lead after three quarters of play.

Sikeston battled back to within six points of Notre Dame, thanks to another three from Howard and two big buckets from Asia Liggins. Fowler and Bradshaw, who had nine points in the frame, each hit threes for Notre Dame to keep the lead intact. Sikeston failed to pull of the upset, with Notre Dame winning by 18 points, 64-46.



With tonight’s win, Notre Dame moves on to the District Championship game, where they will face off against the No. 2 Dexter Lady Bearcats. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Friday (Feb. 25).
