Indians Crash DHS Senior Night

DEXTER, Mo. - The last time the Bearcats faced the Kennett Indians this year was in the finals of the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament, where the Indians beat Dexter by ten points. The scene was no different Friday (Feb. 12) night at the Bearcat Event Center, as the ‘Cats were blown out at the hands of the Indians on Senior Night.
Jake Cox snagged a loose ball with 6:45 left in the first quarter, took it the length of the court and was fouled on his layup attempt, but was unable to hit either of his two free-throws. Fred Garmon picked off a Dexter inbounds pass a minute later and dropped in Kennett’s first two points of the evening; the Indians never gave up the lead for the rest of the contest. Bryn Hester completed a three-point play for the ‘Cats at the 4:30 mark, but was quickly answered with a three by Kennett’s Randrick Caruthers. Tyler Miller was called for goaltending on an Andy Lack layup attempt with 2:00 left in the frame, increasing Kennett’s lead to 10. Lack hit a three for the Indians with 35 seconds left in the first, and pushed the Indians to a 23-9 advantage at the end of the frame.
The ‘Cats put up a quick 6-0 run to open the second quarter, but Lack and Caruthers both connected from beyond the arc to keep Kennett in the lead. Taylor Jarrell made a big offensive rebound and putback with 1:45 left in the half. Luck again hit a three with less than a minute left on the clock for the Indians. Hester hit two free-throws for the ‘Cats with six seconds remaining in the frame, but Kennett had a commanding 17 point lead going into halftime.
Cameron Wallace connected from three-point land ten seconds into the third quarter, pushing Kennett’s lead to 20 points. Hester completed another three-point play for the ‘Cats at the 6:15 mark. Garmon hit a deep three for the Indians on the ensuing possession. Miller nabbed an errant pass by Jack Walls, got fouled on his shot, and completed the three-point play. Logan Robey hit a three with eight seconds left in the third, but Kennet still held a 22 point lead.

“We just closed out people and didn’t give up uncontested shots,” Kennett head coach Jim Vaughan said after the game. “Our kids are buying into our defense and guarding as a whole right now.”
Vaughan seemed very pleased with his team’s defense, especially with regards to Flannigan, who was held to just 14 points on the contest.
“We had the same game plan for [Alan] Flannigan going into tonight as we did last time,” Vaughan continued. “We did a better job of denying him the basketball, sometimes having three people on him.”
“He does merit that much attention; he obviously has a size advantage over us, but he’s just that skilled of a player.”
The Bearcats will be in action again on Tuesday (Feb. 15) night at Poplar Bluff.
“They play really slow and move the ball a lot,” Miller said. “They try to lull you to sleep on defense and get an open look. It’ll probably be a low-scoring game.”
Tipoff for the JV game is scheduled for 5 p.m., followed by the Varsity Girls, and Boys action to close out the evening.

Lady 'Cats Defeat Cape Tigers
February 11th 2011 by Unknown

By Andrew Cato, ShowMe Times Sports
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - After a huge win against state-ranked Meadow Heights Tuesday (Feb. 8) night at home, the Dexter Lady Bearcats had to go on the road Thursday (Feb. 10) to face the Cape Central Lady Tigers. Both teams battled back and forth throughout the contest, and neither team ever had a double-digit lead. Despite beginning the game flat on the defensive side, the Lady Bearcats came out on top, with a final score of 48-41.
Alison Jarrell hit a trey in the opening minute of the game for the ‘Lady Cats, helping them mount a quick 5-0 run. Poor defensive play, coupled with a steal by Chelsea Vinson, allowed the Lady Tigers to creep back into the game and take the lead with 4:00 left in the first. Cape jumped out to a seven point lead at one point, but Dexter battled back, ending the quarter down by only three points.
A quick layup by Brittany Harris cut Cape’s lead to one, but the Tigers quickly put up seven unanswered points, increasing their lead to eight. After a timeout and very fiery talk from coach Chad Allen, Whitehead hit two free-throws for the ‘Cats, Hannah Noe came up with a steal, Paige Patterson deflected a Vinson pass into Noe’s hands, and Dexter was able to creep back within four points. Chelsea Pannier hit a three in the closing minute of the second quarter to boost Cape Central’s lead to seven going into halftime.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the fourth quarter, but solid free-throw shooting from Katelynn Frazier, Whitehead, and Noe helped keep the ‘Cats in the lead. Harris was a force to be reckoned with during the frame, coming up with a three-point play, blocking a jumper from Vinson, and drawing a charge from Cooper-Johnson with less than a minute left in the game. Despite forcing four turnovers in the frame and a late offensive surge, Cape Central wasn’t able to retake the lead, giving Dexter the seven point victory.
“We came out flat tonight defensively,” said Dexter head coach Chad Allen after the game. “I thought we gave up way too many good looks, inside especially. I thought the girls responded well in the second half; we came out better defensively, and a whole lot more active.”
“Those two charges in the second half, with Paige [Patterson] and Brittany [Harris], really gave us a spark. Katelynn Frazier had a couple great offensive boards, and Taylor Owens came off the bench played really well defensively in the second half.”
“We had a few girls step up, give us a spark, and we really got after it in the second half.”
The Lady ‘Cats will face the Notre Dame Lady Bulldogs Monday (Feb. 14) night at the Bearcat Event Center, in a make-up game from last Monday (Feb. 7) that was postponed due to inclement weather conditions. There will be one half of JV play, scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff, followed by the full Varsity game at 7:00 p.m.

Wrestlers Head To District Play
February 10th 2011 by Unknown
Reader Submitted by Coach Rick Schwab
Bearcat wrestlers embark on a journey Friday evening that they’ve been preparing for the entire season, … Districts. The top four placers at each perspective weight class will continue their journey to Columbia next Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the State Championships.

The Bearcats have had rocky season filled with talented athletes who have faced adversity through injury and sickness.
“We’re a competitive team when where at our best, but it’s been difficult, especially here at the end to complete a strong squad,” Coach Rick Schwab said.
The Bearcat wrestlers finish the regular season with a duel record of 7 – 4. In tournaments they took 7th at the Park Hills tournament, being unable to complete a full squad with 9 of 14 wrestlers. The Bearcats medaled 8 of 8 wrestlers at the McClure South Berkeley Tournament, medaled 5 at the SEMO Conference Tournament and 3 at the legendary Tiger Classic Tournament.
Despite of all the adversity, the wrestlers are geared up and ready to take on Districts. On Thursday night, the coaches of the 13 schools in the Class 2 District 1 Tournament met to fight for seeds for their wrestlers.
Dexter was able to bring home at least a top 5 seed in 7 of the 14 weight classes.
Wrestlers competing include:
Freshman 119 pound wrestler Trevor Waldner pulled a 3 seed with a 19 – 15 record. Waldner placed sixth at the Tiger Classic Tournament and fourth at SEMO Conference. Pictured above is Waldner attempting a headlock pinning combination in last weeks duel against Cape Girardeau.
Sophomore 125 pound wrestler Hunter Hardin received a 4 seed. The picture is Hardin scoring a 5-point granby in last week’s duel against Cape Girardeau.
Junior 140 pound wrestler Ryan Vanover received at 5 seed with a 19 – 12 record. Vanover placed fourth at SEMO Conference and third at McClure South Berkeley. He is a 2009 - 2010 State Qualifier. Pictured is Vanover in a spiral ride in last weeks duel against Cape Girardeau.
Senior Captain Dylan Hardin received a 5 seed at 145 lbs with a 19 – 11 record. Hardin placed fourth at SEMO Conference and fifth at McClure South Berkeley. He is a 2009 - 2010 State Qualifier. Pictured is Hardin leg riding in the 3rd place match at SEMO Conference.
Junior Cody Stevens earned a 2 seed at 160 lbs with a 23 – 5 record. Stevens placed third at SEMO Conference, third at Tiger Classic and first at McClure South Berkeley. He is a 2009 – 2010 State Qualifier. Pictured Stevens in a lateral throw at the McClure South Berkeley Tournament.
]Senior Ben Rodgers received at 4 seed at 215 lbs. with a 17 – 12 record. Pictured is Rodgers in last week’s action against Cape Girardeau.
Junior Zach Lacy earned a 2 seed at the HWT Class with a 15 – 3 record. Lacy placed third at SEMO Conference but was unable to wrestle at Tiger Classic and Berkeley due to injury. Pictured is Lacy in the SEMO Conference Tournament.
District wrestling action will be updated Friday night following the first day’s competition.
