Bernice T. Dutton

Bernice T. Dutton, daughter of the late Ira V. Thompson and Bessie Crane Thompson, was born on February 28, 1919 in Bloomfield and departed this life on April 17, 2015 at Cypress Point Skilled Nursing Center in Dexter at the age of 96.

Mrs. Dutton was of the Baptist faith.  She had been the owner of a beauty shop in Dexter and she and her husband were owners of the Moonlight Motel in Dexter.

On July 3, 1954, she and her husband were united in marriage in Corinth, Mississippi.  Mr. Dutton preceded her in death on February 23, 1995.

She is survived by two sons, Dennis Dutton of Houston, Texas and David Dutton of Dexter; by one daughter, Jolene Walker of Sikeston; by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie Corlew.

Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home on Monday, April 20, 2015 from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. 

Graveside services will be conducted on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Walker Cemetery in rural Bloomfield. 

Mathis-Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline E. Bess

Pauline E. Bess, daughter of the late Oma Nelson and Frank and Louella Gunter, was born on August 3, 1924 in Advance and departed this life on April 14, 2015 at Puxico Nursing Center in Puxico at the age of 90.

Mrs. Bess was a member of the Lynwood Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau and a resident of Cape Girardeau. 

She graduated from Advance High School and worked as a homemaker for most of her life, helping her late husband in the Bess Grain Company at harvest time.  In her middle life, she started playing golf and rapidly improved her game, playing mostly in championship flights and very often winning.  She and her husband spent most winters in Tampa, Florida.

On May 30, 1942, she was united in marriage to Jack Bess.  Mr. Bess preceded her in death on June 8, 2014.

She is survived by four grandchildren, Todd Bess of Poplar Bluff, Cindy Martin and her husband Randy of Puxico, Ashley Bess of St. Louis, Missouri and Bami Parsons of Clearwater, Florida; and by two great-grandchildren, Jarrett Martin of Puxico and Jacie Parsons of Clearwater, Florida.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Warren “Jerry” Bess.

Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. 

Funeral services will be conducted in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. with Rev. Mark Anderson officiating. 

Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that all memorials be made to the Southeast Missouri Foundation, Attention Greg Adkins, 1 University Plaza, MS 7300, Cape Girardeau, Missouri 63701.  In the memo line of check, the donor needs to write, Jack and Pauline Bess Scholarship.

Nora Yvonne Bennett
Nora Yvonne Bennett, daughter of the late Orvil and Nora Mae Carter Jackson, was born in Bernie, Missouri on February 29, 1936, and passed away at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on April 14, 2015, at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 16 days.

She had lived in the Dexter, Missouri area all her life and was a member of the Southwest Church of the Nazarene in Dexter, Missouri.

On July 14, 1956, she was married to J. C. Bennett in Hernando, Mississippi. He preceded her in death April 21, 2011.

Surviving are one son, Jay Bennett of Dexter, Missouri; one daughter, Jana Bennett of Dexter, Missouri; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Jackson of Bernie, Missouri; and two sisters, Helen Russell of Dexter, Missouri and Barbara Jewell of Bernie, Missouri. Other relatives and many friends also survive.

She was preceded in death by one son, Tracy Bennett, three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation was Friday, April 17, 2015, after 12:00 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri.

Funeral services were Friday, April 17, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel in Dexter, Missouri with Rev. Brandon Powell of Dexter officiating.

Interment was in the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.

Shirley Triplett
Shirley Triplett daughter of the late Rex and Mable Phillips Keller was born on October 17, 1941 in Hayti, Missouri and departed this life on April 11, 2015 at the Southeast Health of Stoddard County Hospital at the age of 73.

Mrs. Triplett was a resident of Dexter and a member of the Dexter Elks Lodge #2439.

On June 10, 1961 she was united in marriage to Roger Triplett in Frisco. Mr. Triplett survives of their residence.

Besides her husband she is survived by three sons, Mike Triplett of Montgomery, Alabama, Chris Triplett of Montgomery, Texas and Kevin Triplett of Algonquin, Illinois; by two brothers, Rex Keller Jr. of Dexter and Kenneth Keller of Frisco; by seven grandchildren, Derrick Triplett, Andrew Triplett, Victoria Mikeska, Cameron Triplett, Paige Triplett, Blake Triplett and Myla Triplett and by three great-grandchildren, Noah, Taybie and Hunter.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Don Keller.

Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Looney officiating. Interment will follow in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.

James Monroe Overby

James “Jim” Monroe Overby, 84, of Bernie passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Saxony Lutheran Village in Cape Girardeau, Mo., with his family at his side.

He was born July 2, 1930, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the son of the Rev. James M. and Minnie Belle Sutton Overby.  He and Joyce Petty were married May 6, 1952, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., by the Rev. Overby at Maple Avenue Methodist Church.

As the son of a Methodist minister, Jim grew up living in a number of communities, including What Cheer, Iowa; Fort Branch, Francisco and Winslow, Ind.; Henderson, Ky.; Ava, Van Buren, Cabool and Cape Girardeau, Mo.  During his elementary school years, he attended schools in five different communities.

He was a graduate of Cabool High School and attended Southeast Missouri State Teachers College where he met his beloved wife in Dr. A.C. Magill’s chemistry class where students were seated alphabetically (Overby-Petty).   He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950 during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1954.  For the most of his tour of duty, he served at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nev., where he was a flight mechanic. 

Jim worked in sales and finance management in the automobile and insurance industry for many years, including more than 15 years at Rowe Ford Sales in Malden, Mo.  He was a member of the Bernie United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir for more than 60 years, served in a variety of leadership roles and on numerous other church committees at the local and regional level.  For many years, he was a volunteer in Bernie with the Meals on Wheels program.  He was a member of the American Legion in Malden.   He loved sports and actively supported the Bernie High School Mules and the University of Missouri Tigers.  He served for 25 years as the official time keeper for Bernie basketball, and seldom missed any athletic, music, or cultural events where any one of his four daughters or grandchildren were participating.  His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and he also enjoyed traveling and in his latter years visited Germany, Switzerland and Austria, Hawaii, the New England states, and he visited the presidential libraries for Presidents Eisenhower, Johnson, Clinton, Truman and Kennedy.

Loving survivors include his wife of almost 63 years; four daughters and their spouses, Diane Sides of Jackson, Cathy and Scott Kight of Jackson; Karen Green and Glenn Green of St. Louis; and, Lisa and Terry Langley of Springfield, Mo.; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Laura Sides (Matt) Cooper and son Bennett, of Ballwin, Mo.; Ryan (Jennifer) Sides of Mehlville, Mo.; Travis (Jamie) Green and son Tyler of Benton, Mo.; Erik (Jennie) Green of Fenton, Mo., Drew Green and son Jayden of Fenton, Mo.; Erica Kight (Dave) Sander and children Emily and Kyle of Jackson, Mo.; Chad Kight of Cape Girardeau; and Olivia and Caroline Langley of Springfield, Mo.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Vincent Kight; two brothers, John Vernon “Pete” and Tom Overby; and three sisters, Eunice Catherine Ovverby, Margaret Emily Overby and Mary Martha Overby Preston.

Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at the Bernie United Methodist Church.  The funeral is scheduled for Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at the Bernie United Methodist Church, with the Reverends Susan Marner-Sides and Ron Dunnavin officiating.  Interment will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield with full military honors.  Arrangements are being handled by the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri.

Memorials may be made to the Bernie United Methodist Church, the Joyce Petty Overby Scholarship Fund at Bernie High School, the Alzheimers Foundation, or the James M. and Joyce Petty Overby Family Scholarship at the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
