James Monroe Overby

James “Jim” Monroe Overby, 84, of Bernie passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Saxony Lutheran Village in Cape Girardeau, Mo., with his family at his side.

He was born July 2, 1930, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the son of the Rev. James M. and Minnie Belle Sutton Overby.  He and Joyce Petty were married May 6, 1952, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., by the Rev. Overby at Maple Avenue Methodist Church.

As the son of a Methodist minister, Jim grew up living in a number of communities, including What Cheer, Iowa; Fort Branch, Francisco and Winslow, Ind.; Henderson, Ky.; Ava, Van Buren, Cabool and Cape Girardeau, Mo.  During his elementary school years, he attended schools in five different communities.

He was a graduate of Cabool High School and attended Southeast Missouri State Teachers College where he met his beloved wife in Dr. A.C. Magill’s chemistry class where students were seated alphabetically (Overby-Petty).   He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950 during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1954.  For the most of his tour of duty, he served at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nev., where he was a flight mechanic. 

Jim worked in sales and finance management in the automobile and insurance industry for many years, including more than 15 years at Rowe Ford Sales in Malden, Mo.  He was a member of the Bernie United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir for more than 60 years, served in a variety of leadership roles and on numerous other church committees at the local and regional level.  For many years, he was a volunteer in Bernie with the Meals on Wheels program.  He was a member of the American Legion in Malden.   He loved sports and actively supported the Bernie High School Mules and the University of Missouri Tigers.  He served for 25 years as the official time keeper for Bernie basketball, and seldom missed any athletic, music, or cultural events where any one of his four daughters or grandchildren were participating.  His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and he also enjoyed traveling and in his latter years visited Germany, Switzerland and Austria, Hawaii, the New England states, and he visited the presidential libraries for Presidents Eisenhower, Johnson, Clinton, Truman and Kennedy.

Loving survivors include his wife of almost 63 years; four daughters and their spouses, Diane Sides of Jackson, Cathy and Scott Kight of Jackson; Karen Green and Glenn Green of St. Louis; and, Lisa and Terry Langley of Springfield, Mo.; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Laura Sides (Matt) Cooper and son Bennett, of Ballwin, Mo.; Ryan (Jennifer) Sides of Mehlville, Mo.; Travis (Jamie) Green and son Tyler of Benton, Mo.; Erik (Jennie) Green of Fenton, Mo., Drew Green and son Jayden of Fenton, Mo.; Erica Kight (Dave) Sander and children Emily and Kyle of Jackson, Mo.; Chad Kight of Cape Girardeau; and Olivia and Caroline Langley of Springfield, Mo.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Vincent Kight; two brothers, John Vernon “Pete” and Tom Overby; and three sisters, Eunice Catherine Ovverby, Margaret Emily Overby and Mary Martha Overby Preston.

Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at the Bernie United Methodist Church.  The funeral is scheduled for Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at the Bernie United Methodist Church, with the Reverends Susan Marner-Sides and Ron Dunnavin officiating.  Interment will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield with full military honors.  Arrangements are being handled by the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri.

Memorials may be made to the Bernie United Methodist Church, the Joyce Petty Overby Scholarship Fund at Bernie High School, the Alzheimers Foundation, or the James M. and Joyce Petty Overby Family Scholarship at the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.

David Dudley
David O. Dudley, son of the late George Jackson and Alma Lee Cherry Dudley, was born in Doniphan, Missouri on May 31, 1956, and passed away at his home in Wappapello, Missouri on April 12, 2015, at the age of 58 years, 10 months and 12 days.

He had lived in the Puxico area most his life. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post in Wappapello, Missouri.

On July 16, 1993, he was married to Cindy Yount in Wappapello, Missouri.

Surviving are his wife, Cindy Dudley of Wappapello, two sons, Kevin Dudley of Puxico, Adam Yount of Poplar Bluff; one daughter, Tonya Gill of Metairie, Louisiana; three grandchildren; two brothers, Jackie Irwin Dudley fo Hannibal, Missouri, Eddie Burkman of Lowndes, Missouri; and four sisters, Drucilla Lewis of Ironton, Kathy Trankle of Marble Hill, Mary Dudley and Carolyn Dudley both of Missouri. Other relatives and friends also survive.

Friends may call on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, after 11:00 am at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico, Missouri.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at 12:00 pm at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Puxico, Missouri.

John Shanks
John Shanks, age 90, of Bloomfield, Missouri, went home to be with his Lord, April 12, 2015.

Mr. Shanks celebration of life and funeral service will be Thursday morning, April 16, 2015, at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of Bloomfield. 

His family will receive friends at the church at 9:00 a.m., until service time. Rev. Jim Matthews will officiate with Rev. Jerry Darby assisting.  Burial will follow at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.

Mr. Shanks was a World War II veteran and served under General Patton's 3rd Army.

He married his love of over 69 years, Connie Fesmire, on December 22, 1945, in Blytheville, Arkansas.

Mr. Shanks retired from SEMO Electric as a lineman. He was a longtime faithful and active member of the First Baptist Church in Bloomfield.  He was an active member of the American Legion in Bloomfield.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.  His grandchildren affectionately called him Papaw while his great grandchildren lovingly called him Old Papaw. His life was his family and he always had the time to teach them to fish.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Maudie Jane Page Shanks; three sisters, Catherine Boswell, Billie Whittle, and Marray Jo Rakestraw of Sikeston, Missouri.

John is survived by his wife, Connie Shanks of Bloomfield; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Tony Burdine of Bloomfiled; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Shanks of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren, Anthony Shanks of Akron, Ohio, Beth Bradford of Flower Mound, Texas, Shelley Prevost of Chattanooga, Tennessee, T.J. Burdine of Franklin, Tennessee, John Jeffery Shanks of San Antonio, Texas, and Mary Jane Shanks of San Antonio, Texas; thirteen great grandchildren; one brother, Charles "Chick" Shanks of Sikeston, Missouri; and one sister, Wanda Ford of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Many other relatives and friends also survive.

The Shanks family would like to thank the staff of 4 Oaks Hospice of Dexter, his doctor, Dr. Joyce Reed and her nurse Kay for all the loving care shown to their father, and also to Watkins & Sons Funeral Service Staff in Dexter for all of their loving kindness.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Shanks' grandchildren.

Geraldine L. Pyle, daughter of the late Lloyal Cooper and Dawsey McMillion Cooper was born on March 10, 1929 in rural Bernie, Missouri and departed this life on April 10, 2015 at the Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at the age of 86 years.

Mrs. Pyle was a member of the Bernie Church of Christ.  She retired from Elders Manufacturing in Dexter and was a resident of Dexter. 

On January 2, 1946 she was united in marriage to Charley “Pete” Pyle in Malden, Missouri.  Mr. Pyle preceded her in death on September 17, 2007.

Survivors include two sons, Junior Ray Pyle and Michael D. Pyle of Dexter; two daughters, Etta Jean Ross and Karen Forkum of Dexter; by four brothers, Travis Cooper of Bernie, Missouri, Billie Cooper of Dexter, Ardie Cooper of Junction City, Kansas, and Roger Cooper of Bernie; by four sisters, Darlene McGowen and Betty Thurston both of Bernie, Cora Coker of Republic, Missouri, and Janet Wood of Malden, Missouri; by thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Rev. Don Cooper; one sister, Gloriaetta Beaird; and by one granddaughter, Michelle Bollinger.

Friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday April 13, 2015 at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday April 14, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter with Brother Stan Dauck and Rev. Floyd Pyle officiating. 

Interment will follow at the Chalk Bluff Cemetery in Dexter.

Gloria Jean McRoy, daughter of the late Ralph Cecil and Juanita Aliene Parker Becraft, was born in Bloomfield, Missouri on January 22, 1933, and passed away at her home in Bloomfield, Missouri on April 11, 2015, at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 20 days.

She had lived in Bloomfield most of her life.

In 1948 she was married to Edward Dallas McRoy. He preceded her in death on November 16, 2011.

Surviving are one son and daughter in law, Dallas and Linda McRoy of Bloomfield; two daughters, Teresa Barnes and Darlene Bowling both of Bloomfield; six grandchildren, Jimmy Wilson of Dexter, Brian Bowling, Corey McRoy and Mellisa Gigaroa all of Bloomfield, Kelsey Collins of New Milford, Connecticut and Christy Hutchison of Bernie; one granddaughter in law, Amby Barnes of Bloomfield; and nine great grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Becraft of Carlisle, Illinois, Larry Becraft of St. Louis, Missouri; four sisters, Mary Beyer of Bloomfield, Martha Espey of Carlisle, Illinois, Marilyn Gilliam and Sheila Sandage both of Dexter. Other relatives and friends also survive.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Billy Barnes, one great-grandson, Jeremy Tyre Wilson; one sister, Rev. Patricia Sue Smith; and two brothers, Donnie and James Rodney Becraft.

Friends may visit on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, after 11:30 a.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri.

Graveside services will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Walker Cemetery near Bloomfield with Andy Gilliam officiating with interment to follow with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home of Bloomfield, Missouri in charge of arrangements.
