Three Rivers To Hold Registration Events Across Region
Three Rivers College will hold five Fall registration events at locations across Southeast Missouri, July 27 through August 4.

Registration events will be held in Doniphan High School, 4-7 p.m. July 27; Three Rivers – Piedmont in Clearwater High School, 2-5 p.m. July 28; the Delta Center in Portageville, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. July 29; the South Central Education Consortium in Willow Springs, 4-7 p.m. July 30; and at Three Rivers’ new Sikeston location, 4-7 p.m. August 4.

The events provide another opportunity for enrolling for classes, in addition to the assistance offered weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the main campus; 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at full-service locations in Dexter, Malden, Kennett and Willow Springs; and by appointment at Three Rivers – Sikeston.

“We know that it can be hard for prospective students in the outlying areas of our service region to get onto our main locations to register for classes,” said Chris Adams, Director of Enrollment Services at Three Rivers College. “These events are designed to bring the same ease of registering for classes that you experience at Poplar Bluff or Kennett to our whole service region.”

Prospective students who have already applied to Three Rivers and completed the COMPASS test or similar placement test can register for classes at the events. Attendees who have not completed a placement test or their application for admission will receive help in setting up an opportunity to do so. There will also be a special COMPASS test session held at 9 a.m. on August 3 at the Sikeston location, 1400 S. Main in Sikeston. Assistance with financial aid paperwork will also be available at registration events.

Those attending the events can apply for admission or register for classes at any of Three Rivers’ locations or online. Prospective students can search for classes online by going to trcc.edu, clicking on “myTRCC,” followed by “Search for Classes.”  For more information on the admissions process, visit trcc.edu or call 573-840-9605.

Logger Appreciation Day at Legit Speedway June 13
West Plains, Missouri - Aaron Hovis, a 2015 graduate from the Three Rivers Forestry Technology program, will be at the Speedway event on June 13 to put on a timbersport show, sign autographs, and talk about the Timber Harvesting Program. Hovis is a national finalist for the Stihl Timbersports Competition

Logger Appreciation Day will be held at Legit Speedway in West Plains on June 13. South Central Education Consortium of Willow Springs is one of the sponsors for this ‘Free Grandstand Admission” event and will announce plans for a new Program in Timber Harvesting.

The proposed program will emphasize timber harvesting techniques and principles and provide preparation and training for going into the woods safely and efficiently. Students will be trained in all aspects of logging, while earning a certificate that will make them a better prospect for employers.

Aaron Hovis, a 2015 graduate from the Three Rivers Forestry Technology program, will be at the Speedway event on June 13 to put on a timbersport show, sign autographs, and talk about the Timber Harvesting Program. Hovis is a national finalist for the Stihl Timbersports Competition, which will be held in Central Park in New York on June 20. Aaron is also a part of the Timbersports Lumberjack show that performs in 50 venues in North America each year.

Gates at Legit Speedway will open at 4 p.m. June 13 for Logger Appreciation Day. SCEC will give away a full set of protective gear for the professional timber harvester (chaps, hard hat, ear protection and eye protection). Three Rivers’ partners in the planned Timber Harvesting program, Missouri Forest Products Association and the Missouri Department of Conservation, will also be at the event to answer questions.

Wood products are all around us, from the homes we live in, to the pencils we write with, and the pallets that move products all over the world. The forest products industry annually contributes over $8 billion dollars of economic activity in Missouri. Missouri products are sold nationally and internationally.

Timber is the number one agricultural crop in Missouri. The industry supports over 41,200 jobs at a payroll of about $1.9 billion and is responsible for almost $610 million in taxes that help to run our state and country, including $77 million in state sales tax.

“We have a significant need for quality Timber Harvesters in our area,” said Scott Williamson, Director for Three Rivers College in Willow Springs. “We want to give students the education and skills necessary to succeed in the industry and be good stewards of the forest. We want Timber Harvesters who manage the land for future growth.”

As long as there is a need for wood products, there will be a need for loggers in Missouri. Nationally, the average income for a logger is about $35,000. In Missouri, the average logger makes about $31,000.

Thanks to new construction and renovation, pallet making, tables, chairs and a long list of other wood products, the demand for loggers is high. With most Missouri’s loggers between 40 and 60 years old, there is a need for the next generation in the woods.

Those interested in the Timber Harvesting program or any of the other educational offerings at South Central Education Consortium, call 417-469-3000.

South Central Education Consortium is a partnership between Three Rivers College and Missouri State University – West Plains. The Consortium, located in the former MoDOT Headquarters at 908 Springfield Road in Willow Springs, offers career-technical degrees and certificates, developmental classes, and general education college courses.

Three Rivers Signs Articulation Agreement with Murray State
Poplar Bluff, Missouri - Three Rivers College and Murray State University have finalized an articulation agreement that will allow students in Three Rivers’ Agriculture program to seamlessly transfer to several of the degree programs in Murray State’s Hutson School of Agriculture.

“We’re very proud of this agreement and the bachelor’s degree completion opportunities that it will open up for our students,” said Dr. Brenda Russell, Dean of Career Education and Workforce Development at Three Rivers College. “This agreement will make it much easier for our students to continue their education with Murray State’s excellent Agriculture programs.”

The agreement allows students who complete an Associate of Arts Degree in Agriculture at Three Rivers to transfer their college credits into one of seven agriculture bachelor’s degree programs at Murray State. This allows students to complete their Freshman and Sophomore years close to home and at a cost savings, then transfer to Murray State to complete their Junior and Senior years.

Murray State programs specified in the transfer agreement are Agriculture Education, Agricultural Systems Technology, Agriscience Technology, Agribusiness, Agronomy, Animal/Equine Science, and Horticulture.

The process of working out the articulation agreement started in 2013 with meetings between educators from Three Rivers and Murray State. Spearheading the agreement process for Three Rivers was Agriculture Instructor Joyce Rehkop.

Registration is currently open for Summer and Fall classes at Three Rivers College, including courses in the Associate of Arts in Agriculture program.
