In Memory of Charles Elsworth Griffin

Charles Elsworth Griffin, son of the late Tom and Viola Hume Griffin was born on December 11, 1932 in Essex, Missouri and departed this life on August 30, 2019 at the Crowley Ridge Care Center in Dexter at the age of 86.

Mr. Griffin was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, and had formerly attended the New Bethel General Baptist Church near Dexter.  He had also worked as a farmer and a security guard at the Sikeston Power Plant.  

Charles was united in marriage to Wanda Gowen on December 31, 1978 in Dexter.  Mrs. Griffin survives of their residence in Dexter.

Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Charles Wayne Griffin and wife Mary of Albany, Georgia; by one daughter, Jean Ann Hawley and her husband Tom of Albuquerque, New Mexico; by one step-son, Lyle Allen and his wife Mindy of O’Fallon, Missouri; by one step-daughter, La Trisha Earnheart and her husband Randy of Dexter; by four brothers, Jerry and wife Carolyn Griffin of Dexter, Bobby Griffin of Dexter, Larry and wife Jeanette Griffin of Caruthersville, Missouri and Danny Griffin of Dexter; by one sister, Cathy and husband Fred Graham of Scott City, Missouri; by eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.  

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter, Cindy Griffin and by one sister, Joyce Chapman.

A grave-side memorial service will be conducted on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield with Rev. Lonny Mittag officiating. 

Full Military Honors will be performed.

Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter is in charge of all arrangements.

In Memory of Janet Lee Sandusky

Janet Lee Sandusky, daughter of the late Frank and Stella Baker Hensley was born on October 2, 1946 in Bexar, Arkansas and departed this life on September 1, 2019 at the Cypress Point Skilled Nursing Facility in Dexter at the age of 72.

Mrs. Sandusky was the former owner of Janet’s Beauty Salon in Dexter and worked as a beautician for many years.

On April 2, 1966 she was united in marriage to Jerry Lloyd Sandusky Sr. at Kansas City, Missouri.  Mr. Sandusky preceded her in death on June 8, 2009.

She is survived by one daughter, Sonia Cark of Puxico, Missouri; by one daughter-in-law, Sarah Sandusky of Dexter; by three grandchildren, Sean Sandusky, Alexandra Burke and Kara Moore and by two great-grandchildren, Lance Burke and Jordan Hardin.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Lloyd “BO” Sandusky Jr.and by nine brothers and sisters.

Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 from 9:30 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. 

Funeral services will then be conducted on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dale Hartle officiating. 

Interment will follow in the Smith-Stevenson cemetery.

In Memory of Betty Kathryn Branum

Betty Kathryn Branum, daughter of the late Roy Bickford Woods and Elsie Dora Slayton Woods, was born in Bernie, Missouri on October 27, 1932 and departed this life at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Missouri on August 30, 2019 at the age of 86.

She was former owner of Tucker’s Café in Bloomfield, Missouri; former cashier at Woods Supermarket of Bernie and former Dispatcher at Bernie Police Department.  She was a member of Bernie United Methodist Church and a resident of Bernie.

She was united in marriage to John Wesley Branum in Bernie, Missouri on October 15, 1950.  Mr. Branum preceded his wife in death on June 25, 1987.

Survivors include one son, John Branum Jr. & wife Margaret of Albion, Illinois; by three daughters, Tammy Freeman & husband Wayne of Dexter, Missouri, Linda Hill & husband Carl of Dexter, Missouri and Brenda Tilk & husband Dan of Annapolis, Missouri; by nine grandchildren,  Melanie Arehart & husband Andrew, Andrea Ward & husband Mitchell, Michael Branum & wife Marie, Jessica Freeman, Alan Kelsay & wife Kelly, Michelle Mahler & husband Brandon, Jonni Hill, Patrick Tilk & wife Amie and Donovan Tilk & wife Ashleigh; also by other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death other than by her parents and her husband, by one brother, R.B. Woods; by three sisters, Maxine O’Heren, Nadine Harmon and Lorene Williams.

Friends may call at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie, Missouri on Monday, September 2, 2019 from 9:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. 

Funeral Services will then be conducted in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Susan Marner-Sides and Rev. Jayne Markin officiating. 

Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.

In Memory of William “Darryl” New

William “Darryl” New passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2019 at the age of 71.

He leaves behind his wife Sharon New of Bernie, Missouri; two children, Holly Shipp, and Derik New of Malden, Missouri; six wonderful grand-children; and sisters, Kathy Clappsaddle of Yellville, Arkansas, Brenda Busboom of Buckeye, Arizona and Jennifer Stratman of Sikeston, Missouri. 

Born in 1947, to Ralph and Regina New of Malden he was the third born sibling in the family. Darryl attended Malden public school in his youth and graduated with the class of 1967.  He volunteered for service in the United States Air Force at 19 and after serving in Korea and Vietnam for a few years found he had a knack as an aircraft mechanic and generally fixing broken stuff. He returned 1970 and came home to marry his wife Sharon, the love of his life for 49 years.

After many odd jobs, Darryl and his dad Ralph started “News Motorcycle Shop” where Darryl repaired motorcycles or any wheeled vehicle, and was an all-around handyman. In 1977 he joined the Missouri national guard in Bernie Missouri and served there until 1989. With the help of some friends he opened New’s Auto Salvage in 1989 and remained in business until 2018.

Following his wishes, there will be a small graveside service on Friday, August 30, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.  He will be greatly missed by his family, and friends.

Braydan Isaiah Aaron Patrick, 4 of Sikeston, Missouri died Sunday, August 25, 2019 at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Missouri. He was born July 24, 2015 in Sikeston to Lance Patrick Jr. and Searea Ann Miller.

He is survived by his mother Searea of Sikeston; his father Lance of Sikeston; a brother, Ron Johnson of Sikeston; a sister, Ann Belle Johnson of Sikeston; maternal grandmother, Christina Webb of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; maternal grandfather, Tim and Nichole Miller of Myakka City, Florida and paternal grandfather, Lance Patrick, Sr. of East Prairie, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, June Hayes.

Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the time of service on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday at the chapel with Rev. Dennis Lowe officiating.
