Red Ribbon Week and Bully Prevention Month Wrapped Up with a BIG Photo

Dexter, Missouri - Central Elementary wrapped up their Bullay Awareness Month with a photo of every student who attend Central Elementary in Dexter using a drone.

Keith Byrd with Birdsview Aerial Imagery, graciously offered his time to load up the drone and fly it high above the students and take their photo from above.

This year's theme was Lend a Hand, Take A Stand, Stop Bullying!

An Anti-Bully playlist of songs was created and played in the cafeteria before school throughout the month of October.  Students were encouraged to sing a long karaoke style from time-to-time.

A "Bullys Stink" Video was created and produced with the help of Torrey Peterson and posted on the ShowMe Times Facebook page.  You can still view the video.

Bully prevention videos were shown each Tuesday with a lesson on how to report and prevent bullying.

Random drawings were held throughout the month and one hundred "I Don't Bully" T-shirts were given away to students.

The Bully awareness theme banners were created in ART class with Mrs. Whitaker.  These banners were a focal point for the school-wide photo. held on Oct. 31.

Red Ribbon Week- Celebrated the week of Oct. 23th - Oct. 27th. Bad weather postponed the drone until October 31st.

Monday-Discussed the purpose of Red Ribbon Week and how it all began.

SPECIAL AGENT KIKI CAMARENA:" Special Agent Camarena was an 11-year DEA veteran assigned to the Guadalajara, Mexico, office, where he was on the trail of the country’s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers.  In 1985, he was extremely close to unlocking a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline.

On February 7, 1985, he was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by Mexican drug traffickers. His tragic death opened the eyes of many Americans to the dangers of drugs and the international scope of the drug trade."

HISTORY OF RED RIBBON WEEK:

Shortly after Kiki’s death, Congressman Duncan Hunter and Kiki’s high school friend Henry Lozano launched “Camarena Clubs” in Kiki’s hometown of Calexico, California.  Hundreds of club members pledged to lead drug-free lives to honor the sacrifice made by Kiki Camarena.

These pledges were delivered to First Lady Nancy Reagan at a national conference of parents combating youth drug use. Several state parent organizations then called on community groups to wear red ribbons during the last week of October as a symbol of their drug-free commitment.

• The first Red Ribbon Week celebrations were held in La Mirada and Norwalk, California.

• In 1988, the National Family Partnership coordinated the first National Red Ribbon Week, with President and Mrs. Reagan serving as honorary chairpersons.
