Shyann Jines Signs with Mineral Area College

Dexter, Missouri – It’s always a proud moment when one of our own Bearcats signs to play sports at any college.  On Thursday, Shyann Jines signed to play volleyball at Mineral Area College.

“It felt like home when I went up there,” commented Jines.  “I was kind of unsure on the way up, but as soon as I got there I was like this is where I am going.  The coach was a big factor in the decision and having Jessie (Jessica Lindsey who also signed with MAC – click HERE for article) with me for another two years makes me real excited.”

Shyann is the daughter of Corey and Stacy Blocker and Brian and Amanda Jines.  She has been a member of the DHS Volleyball Lady ‘Cats for 4 years and has also been a basketball cheerleader her sophomore and junior year and will again cheer for the basketball team this year.

Jines is a member of the Future Teachers Association, Honor Society, FCCLA, is on the Yearbook staff and is the president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“I was going to be a high school teacher and then go into administration, but it has changed,” Jines said.  “I went to the orthodontist, and I’ve always loved teeth and I think I am going to be a dental hygienist now.  I am going to take classes for my pre-reqs and apply them towards that.”

Her awards have included Defensive Player of the Year, 2nd Team All-District Volleyball 2012, 2nd Team All-District Volleyball 2013, and a member of the All-Stoddard County Volleyball Tournament Team 2013.

This year she earned Class 3, District 1 All-District All-Tournament team Second Team, All-Region First Team, and Honorable Mention All-State recognition.  Her varsity team went 29-4-1 this season and won the SCAA Tournament for a second straight season, won the 48-Team Dig for Life Classic for the first time in school’s history and won their Class 3 District tournament for the first time in 14 years.  They also went undefeated in regular season SCAA play.

Jines was also selected at co-MVP of the Dexter Lady Bearcat’s 2014 volleyball team along with her classmate Lindsey Young.  She finished her season with a total of 186 kills, 65 block kills, 21 aces served, 118 digs, and 95.4 serving percentage.

“I like southern kids and I mean that in a positive way,” commented head MAC coach Tim Copeland said of recruiting Jines.  “Because of the hospitality that is given more down south those kids usually come up and are good to coach, excited to be there, and the personalities usually fit really good with the other kids that I have.  I look for talent, but I also look for the inner part of the kid to make sure they are going to go to class and graduate.”

Jines said she looks forward to playing with Jessica Lindsey.  “The more people you have played with the better it is.  We don’t have to worry about team chemistry as much because Jessie and I have played together since the fourth grade.  Alexis Spears from Perryville is also going up there and I played club ball with her last year.  I am really excited about getting to be on the team with both of them.”

Congratulations Shyann Jines on your signing and we will see you on the court again next year at Mineral Area College!

Top Seeded 8th Grade Bearcats Beat Bernie in SCAA Championship

Dexter, Missouri – Top seeded Dexter Bearcats did it again after watching the 7th grade team beat Bernie, the 8th grade team didn’t want to miss out on their own championship trophy!

The Mules gave them quite a run, but it was top-seeded Dexter who edged Bernie 38-31 in a seesaw battle between two of the best middle school rivalries in southeast Missouri.

Dexter scored first, but Bernie answered with a 3-pointer putting them on top within seconds of the start of the first quarter.  Both teams scored double digits before moving on to the second period.

It was a seesaw battle throughout most of the game with fans sitting on the edge of their seats.  As each young man made his basket one could hear cheers from the crowd, then silence as they waited for the next basket to fall.  It was a packed house at the Bearcat Event Center.  Both Bernie and Dexter fans showed their spirit with rally towels and appropriate colored t-shirts of their favorite team, but it was the Dexter Bearcats who came out on top with the 38-31 win. Way to go Bearcats!

"This group of boys set out to win the SCAA Championship again this year and they are excited to be able to accomplish their goal," commented Coach Josh Dowdy.

Seth Rogers earned a game-high 15 points for the Bearcats.  Eric Hahn tallied 9 points including a trey.  Braxton Foster finished with 6 and Nate Gargas added 5.  Joe Rice scored 3 point.

"Seth has been steady all year handling the ball and had another great performance despite being in foul trouble," continued Dowdy.  "I was really pleased with how well Joe played defensively also.  he took care of a couple of their set plays and closed out on their shooters."

"Eric did not hit as many shots as he normally does, but he is always so composed which provides a calming effect for the rest of the guys."

"Nate is just gamer," stated Dowdy. "He does so many things right, we are just looking for him to attack more and once he does that he will be pretty tough to deal with on the offensive end."

Dowdy went on so say he felt Bernie played hard and they came to play.  "I am glad we had to earn it, that's the way Championships should be won!"

Final Score 8th Grade Championship:  Dexter 38, Bernie 31

Bernie   10      7   5   9   -  31

Dexter   13   10   7   8   -  38

Bearcats Beat Bernie in SCAA Middle School Boys Championship

Dexter, Missouri - Top seeded Dexter Middle School Bearcats defeated second seeded Bernie Jr. High Mules 40-24 in the 7th grade championship of the SCAA Jr. High Boys Basketball Tournament held at the Bearcat Event Center in Dexter on Tuesday evening.

"The team is having success because of their defense right now which is always good to see," commented Coach Josh Dowdy.  "I though we handled their full court pressure better this time around.  Coach Williamson has spent a lot of time teaching the boys a new press offense and the kids executed it very well.  The kids were pretty fired up in the locker room after raising that trophy.....we are proud of them!"

The Bearcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back.  The closest the Mules would get would be in the third quarter when they rallied scoring 11 points and managed to cut the deficit to 27-20.

Powerhouse Brodie Pollock was too much for the Mules.  He scored a game-high 15 points and managed to get numerous rebounds.

"Pollock is such a presence on top," continued Dowdy.  "The rest of the team is doing a much better job rotating in the back of the press and getting in the right position.  Little ole Scruggs had a great game for us too last night handling the ball and knocking down some shots.  Haden, Henson, Warren, and Wyman continue to do a good job as well carrying out their duties and understanding their role."

Jack Scruggs tallied 11 points including one try and Garrett Henson added 6 points for the Bearcats.  Garrett Henson also hit a 3-pointer.

Blake Harty scored 15 points for the Mules for a team-high record that included one trey. Kade Burk also hit a 3-pointer.

Final Score 7th Grade Championship:  Dexter 40,  Bernie 24

Bernie   2    7   11     4   -   24

Dexter   8    9   10   13   -   40

Bernie (24) – Blake Harty 15, Kade Burk 5, Skyler Schwent 2, Braylin Jankowski 2.  FG 10, FT 2/4, F 11 (3-pointers: Harty 1, Burk 1.  Fouled out: none)
