Celebrating 100 Years

Bernie, Missouri - Toots McGowan, a Bernie resident, recently celebrated her 100th birthday on the 4th of July.

Laverne "Toots" Wilson-McGowan was born on July 4, 1916 in a log cabin in Black Oak, Arkansas in Craighead County.

She had four brothers and two sisters who were all born at home back then.  She was the fifth in her family to be born in the lo cabin.  Her father was a barber in Caraway, Arkansas about five miles from their home.  They would walk regularly to and from the barber shop.  Along with his job, the family farmed a portion of their 40 acres.

When she was 17 she married Raymond McGowan.  He was from Bernie, Missouri about 80 miles north of her hometown.  Together they had six children.  All sons and all with the names beginning with the letter J - Jimmy, Jerry, Jack, Johnny, Jeff and Jan.  Jimmy passed away.

Those six sons produced 18 grandchildren and there are now 37 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Raymond, died at the age of 55 from complications from high blood pressure.  She decided to work outside of the home and worked for Brown Shoe.  When she was 70 she began babysitting in her home until she was 90 when her eyesight began to fail and she decided to give it up.

Toot credits her longevity to just plain old fashioned clean living and walking.  She never smoked and she never drank alcohol.

Kennady Thrower - Can You Eat a Squirrel?
Dexter, Missouri - This photo of Marc Thrower and his 2-year-old daughter Kennady was taken at his home in Dexter.

After reading  her a book about a cat who wanted to eat a squirrel, she asked him if you can really eat a squirrel.

To which he replied, "You sure can!" and she asked him to get her one.

SO... he did!

Cant say she loved it completely, but it's a life experience she now has that gives her book, a life of its own!

Submitted by Debra Thrower!  Thank you so much for sharing!  Kids say the coolest things!

Karley's First Deer

Karley Kerperien shot her first deer this weekend during the annual Youth Hunt in Missouri.

Karley is the daughter of Joey and Amy Kerperien.

She's going to be a great hunter!

Congratulations Karley!

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, dates for this year's early youth hunt weekend were Saturday, October 31 through Sunday, November 1 and will be again January 2 - 3, 2016.

Shooting hours are one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset.

Boys and girls must be at least six years of age and no older than 15 on opening day of the early youth hunt.

Antler point restrictions do not apply for youth anywhere in Missouri during the 2015, special youth hunt weekends. All youth hunters and their adult mentors must wear a hunter orange hat and shirt, vest or coat. Only one deer may be taken during this youth hunt. If a youth hunter has more than one permit they should use the additional permit(s) during the regular firearms, alternative methods or later youth season.
